NPR has learned that the Department of Health and Human Services will not be finalizing its most aggressive attempt to end gender-affirming
"The Trump administration is abandoning its most aggressive attempt to end gender-affirming care for youth nationally, according to an official document obtained by NPR.
The document shows that the Department of Health and Human Services will not be finalizing a proposed rule that would have blocked all Medicaid and Medicare funding for hospitals that provide pediatric gender-affirming care."
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
This is a relief, of course, but as the article says, there still remains a question of the hospitals that prematurely ended their trans youth services before this rule was finalized. If the chilling effect remains, that would be a win-win for this administration: drastically reduced or no care options for trans kids with none of the legal hassle of actually putting the rule into effect.
Personally I will be contacting my mayor again. NYC has had two major hospitals abandon their trans youth patients and now is the time to pressure them into restarting. These kids deserve better. The Mamdani administration recently sent out an email to constituents who had lodged complaints, saying, "Our Law Department has submitted an amicus brief opposing subpoenas that sought the medical records of transgender patients, and we stand ready to litigate any threat to gender-affirming care for youth and adults." Well, a threat is still a threat until that care is restored. What these hospitals did was legally and morally wrong and they should be compelled to fix their mistake.
also wanted to add that while the DHHS has not moved to finalize the rule, they also have not retracted the proposal. From the article:
"Katie Keith, director of the Health Policy and the Law Initiative at Georgetown University, says that keeping the rule in limbo is useful to the Trump administration, which has been trying to end gender-affirming care for youth.
'By not withdrawing the rule, CMS can keep the threat of doing so alive and continue to discourage providers from offering the care — even if the rule is never finalized,' says Keith, who also served in the Biden administration"

more than anything i want a world where a trans girl realizing she is a trans girl faces zero fear from that realization and subsequent coming out. Where she can say "Oh sweet, I can just be a girl? Sign me up!", no worrying if shes girl enough, no worrying if society will accept her, no worrying if she'll be an attractive girl as she transitions, no worrying at all in any way shape or form.
something that I find frustrating as a highly verbal autistic person is that when I am unable to mask or have a lot of brain fog or just don't have access to the cognitive capacity to communicate concisely, my speech and writing don't become simpler, they become more complex in ways that make them harder to understand. which interferes in my communication significantly, partly because my sentences become really winding and tortured, and also in no small part because it tends to make people think that I'm being pretentious on purpose. which makes them dismiss me. and in actuality what they are observing is me losing skills. which is a common autistic experience but which tends to look very different than the thing that happens to me, on a superficial level
palestine has taught me how easy it is to normalize genocide when it's so close to you
us americans currently live in a state actively continuing the largest genocide in history against its indigenous people
rightfully so, leftists and people with a moral compass are deeply disturbed by what's happening to palestine, and i think it's in part because we're outsiders not yet desensitized to violence against palestinians
but we also turn a blind eye to reservations where the government is actively depriving indigenous communities of adequate land, food, independence, sanitation, drinking water, and who continues to aid the collective forgetting of indigenous culture
north america was a whole ass world y'all, with civilizations as significant and massive as rome, and we know basically NOTHING about that world because our government has actively destroyed and buried it
the genocide is still ongoing; indigenous people are still here, fighting to preserve their culture and languages, and it's happening right now in your backyard
if you ever wanna know how israelis can live with themselves being so close to an ongoing genocide, you probably already know

I think for a lot of people “I am completely helpless and powerless” and “I am completely powerful and in control” are both basically comforting fantasies because most of us live our lives in an in between place where we have enough agency to be responsible for our actions but not enough agency to have true control over our lives and the tension between power and powerlessness in the day to day is psychologically wearing and exhausting
For all that the 1800s etiquette guides are--obviously--derangedly sexist from a modern perspective? They're also mindblowing in how casually they will assert things that MODERN DAY CONSERVATIVES would scream and cry and shit their pants about.
"People back then always married young it's natural!!!" Every single 1800s guide I've ever met casually mentions that, of course, you really shouldn't get married before you're at least 20, and waiting until 25 is usually better.
Or, like. Okay here's a long segment:
Just firmly going "it is crazy sexist to blame The Wife for overspending when thirty seconds of asking questions will immediately establish that her husband was outright lying to her about how much money they had. Talk to your wife like a normal person."
Or--okay, here. A section on being honest and not writing love letters in secret, because that's usually a good sign that there's something untoward going on....
....except that he then immediately acknowledges that sometimes, the reason you're hiding this from your parents is that your parents suck. That there are parents who frankly have not earned the right to approve or disapprove of your partner.
(I realize the phrasing there sounds a lot less strong than my summary, but--trust me on this. When you're familiar with the narrative voice of these kinds of books, this passage is downright radical. The mere acknowledgement that if you treat your kids badly, it's your own damn fault when they don't talk to you? I've genuinely never seen that before in this genre. Don't freak out over "properly trained", either. It's just a linguistic shift--at the time, "training" was used the way we would say "raising" a child today. )
"Delete all the nudes and sexts after a breakup or you're a piece of shit" has been the standard expectation since EIGHT. TEEN. EIGHTY. FIVE.
"Men and women being friends with each other is literally normal. Don't be a controlling freak."
Anyway I was wrong the publishing date is actually 1882 so like.
"If you have to abuse a child to keep order in your classroom then you're a bad teacher."
So like @ the modern Republican party, are the "traditional family values" in the fucking room with us right now--
"Women should absolutely work if the family economy requires it, that is only reasonable. Trying to keep your 'status' at any cost is foolish" and "Of course the wife should be open with her opinions and have full knowledge of the family economy and affairs" - Miss Hartley (The Ladies' Book of Etiquette, and Manual of Politeness, 1860) telling off every rightwing and tradwife grifter
Mannnnn why is this festival I'm at planning to release doves today when it is predicted to be 96° with a heat index of 111°.
I think dove releases are pointless and mean to the doves even under the best of circumstances, but this is straight up animal cruelty and these things are gonna drop dead from heat exhaustion. What the fuck.
Even under "ideal" circumstances a dove release is just driving a domesticated animal a few dozen miles away from its home and making it fly back, exposing it to hazards like weather, cars, windows, and predators. They're not native birds, they're pets, and if they're white they have zero camouflage. I have found several injured white pigeons over the years that I suspect were "dove releases."
What do people think is supposed to happen to the birds in a dove release. I'm gonna drive you ten miles away and make you walk home during a heat wave because it's so beautiful and inspirational to me
american blackbirds are icterids but european blackbirds are thrushes but american robins are thrushes but european robins are flycatchers and they are named robin because (checks notes) brits in the 1400s called them "robert" on account of they are just some familiar guy who shows up in your yard. hold on post canceled is that really why they are called that? what the fuck. they did this with jackdaws and magpies too? i can't even be annoyed. how human. "who's that? that's bob." fuck dude it sure is.
this also slightly recontextualizes their naming american robins. these birds look similar to robins so we'll call them robins "omg you remind me of my friend Bob. H EY EVERYONE DOESN'T THIS GUY LOOK JUST LIKE BOB? lol im gonna call you 'new bob'"

BartNat. I finally got round to drawing a request I received three years ago. The request was: Bart, summoned by another master, but still unable to stop worrying about Nat more than anyone else. Hmm... I have a feeling I've drawn something rather like this before...
