So, I used to be a lurker (mostly was here to see Good Omens stuff). Then I got into Miami Vice.
I guess I'm not a lurker anymore. 😉 It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it.
I curate my dash carefully because I'm here for a few very specific things. Most of those are old shows, like Miami Vice, Quantum Leap, Torchwood, Starsky & Hutch, Moonlight, The Sentinel. I could go on and on with the list, but these are the main ones. The 'recent' shows I'm into are Leverage and Good Omens.

Curious on the front porch's take on this post https://www.tumblr.com/swamp-spirit/822217683834683392/theres-also-a-tendency-to-conflate-anyone-who
I'm split, partially because I don't think the racism argument applies to the transmasc characters the way the person is trying to.
--
It's a "if you would just consider" argument.
The problem with all such arguments, even the ones I emotionally agree with, is that there is no way to effectively signal that one has already considered.
To me, insulating fanworks creators from unasked for critique is not about preventing them from ever feeling bad. It's about preventing people from wasting those creators' time.
Plenty of fanworks are gross, but even more "critique" is tedious shipwars dressed up as social justice. Plenty of trends stem from problems in society, but many posts about trends just add up to the panopticon and the double standard that recent post mentioned. One has every right to make a post in one's own space critiquing fandom culture, but a critical mass of such posts tends to just make fanworks creators run away. It doesn't lead to any of the apparently desired outcomes like more numerous high-quality works about character X.
We all know that the vast majority of critique is incompetent, just like the vast majority of fic is not especially well written. An AO3 user is perfectly entitled to make a bookmark saying "I found this fic racist. Reader beware!" They are not entitled to that author's attention or response.
I do agree with them that the kneejerk response to judgy "have you considered" posts is people falling all over themselves with excuses, and the excuses do often stray into "black people just aren't interesting" unintentionally. Ditto the gender version of this. Flailing excuses frequently come out having Unfortunate Implications™ since they're written in the middle of an anxiety spiral.
I think it's important for us to own our taste and start showing some backbone when asked to Just Consider. This won't lead to different fanworks being produced, but it will cut down on flailing justification posts, which create their own hostile environment.
That's something I severely overlooked in the past and it's worth emphasizing: seeing gobs and gobs of "This is why I never like femslash wharrrgarbl!" has a similar negative effect to masses of "STOP AND CONSIDER, YOU MONSTER." We don't need to see nearly so much of either, especially in their most guilt- or rage-laden and unnuanced forms.
"I've thought about the topic before, but I don't want to have this conversation with you" is much healthier for people to see on their dash than "It's not my fault: Female characters are more boring across the board!" and its many unfortunate cousins.
--
I do see a big double standard in fandom, which is that hostility in a space with diverse characters chases everyone away, but the most toxic-ass fandom for majority characters often won't.
Sherlock fandom had that dumbass top/bottom war about how it was pedo to have the wrong same age white guy top. The fandom kept chugging along because it was already huge and because most people just weren't that nervous about the grand political importance of their horny johnlock fic.
There's no particular cure for this double standard other than blocking liberally so you don't see wank that will sour a fandom for you—or toughening up, I guess, but that's easier said than done.
--
I wish we could collectively let go of the idea that fandom routinely fleshes out galaga guy as anything other than a one-week joke in 2012.
Black characters who don't get shafted by canon's writing and don't get shafted by canon's filmmaking choices (for live action) and are in a canon that is fun genre fiction but just a little crap or open-ended do tend to elicit a good fannish response. We need more of those canons.
Waiting for black Arthur/Eames is foolish. That kind of thing barely exists for majority characters.
Pushing for that but a different demographic will be far less successful than admitting that fandom mostly likes characters with meaty roles and seeking out media that didn't hamstring fandom from the beginning. I'm in a Chinese media phase, but if I swing back to Western cop shows at some point, you'll hear me routinely singing the praises of one Ricardo Tubbs.
Is Miami Vice problematic? OH BOY, is it ever. But it's also a seminal work of cinematography, brilliant neo noir, and the source of an oft-whumped black woobie who cries single perfect tears. I have made many cheesy, over-the-top vids of my fave.
And while, yes, the old slash zine fandom was ruled with an iron fist by two specific people who hated him for Die For Our Ship reasons, the majority of fans who've gotten into MV later are like "Ooh, buddy cop hoyay!" about Crockett and Tubbs.
If you would like spoilers for the most epic and ridiculous of Miami Vice plotlines, please enjoy:
LOOK! THEY'RE BOTH WOOBIES AND THEY BOTH GET FAKE DEAD!
(Why was no one into this fandom in 2010 when I really cared? I should go check out the MV discord and see if people are still posting.)
--
Anyway, I think the anger around this kind of topic makes sense. The feelings of alienation are understandable.
But I do feel like there's often an undercurrent that the thing that would make people feel welcome is fandom focusing on their fave. As a small fandoms person... no, I'm sorry, that's just not on the table most of the time. You either follow the boring herd to the thing with the most fic or you settle.
The ways in which it is possible and practical to "fix" fandom all involve access: making it easier for people to post their own fanworks about their faves, even their unpopular faves. Miami Vice in the zine days had one publisher of slash zines, and they hated the black lead. It did not matter how much consciousness was raised elsewhere: this one gatekeeper stood in the way. (Hilariously and tragically, the single best and most prolific writer actually loved my fave but was not in the habit of writing drawer fic.)
Making it easy to get an AO3 account matters. Making it easy to block people who harass you in the comments section matters. Access matters. Demanding labor from other people isn't going to solve anything. I know this type of post doesn't see that as the message, but it often is in there implicitly.
I often feel alone when my faves are not popular, but because of different demographics, I know it's just that I'm a small fandom person, and being alone is the default in fandom. Make the party happen if you want a party. Yes, it's not fair. It will always be unfair. That goes for a demographic of character being unpopular. That goes for a specific character being unpopular. That goes for a segment of fic being unpopular on AO3 though wildly popular elsewhere. That goes for building a fanworks archive. And for everything else. People are doing something wrong if they stop you from making things. They are not doing anything wrong if they are making their own things that aren't the ones you would enjoy most. Block/mute them if their work is offensive and get back to making your own stuff.
OK, random little thought, but would anybody like to collaborate to put together a mini digital zine for Miami Vice? I was so charmed looking through a collection of scanned zines of all sorts a while back and thinking about how, according to @mxcatmoon, C/T was vanishingly rare in zines, that I kind of wanted to make my own. If you’re interested, please do reply or message me – anything from art to fic to meta would be appreciated, or just to say you would be interested in reading. Also, I’d love some silly name suggestions. I don’t think we can beat Miami Verse but we can try!
Right, this got a lot of support over a short period of time so that’s encouraging. I’ve ironed out a few details now so let me present to you, as named by popular interest, HUNGRY EYES:
What’s the core concept?
Pretty much just a fanzine, so a collection of fic, art, and meta/related stuff, related to our fandom, i.e. Miami Vice and more specifically C/T. As of now we’re looking at one issue, but if it goes well then possibly we may make another. Never say never, eh?
I’m interested in contributing, what would you like?
I’d love any contributions of fanfic, fanart, or meta/analysis/essays! It would be much appreciated if these could be things you haven’t previously published, or in the case of meta, things you haven’t published in a ‘fully fledged’ form before, and a soft limit of 5k words for fic and 2.5k words for meta. Baby steps!
In terms of content, please keep fic to at most what you consider to be AO3’s ‘Mature’ label, and art to ‘Teen and Up’, but this is generally a little flexible.
To actually get your submission to me, please send me a message and we’ll sort out the transfer details on a case-by-case basis. Don’t worry, I don’t bite! Please also remember to include how you would like to be credited, though again this can be sorted out. If you’d like to be anonymous, that’s also fine.
Please don’t feel intimidated if you haven’t published any fic, art, or meta before either. This could be the start of something new! (It feels so right, being here with you…)
I don’t do any of that but I’d still like to contribute…
I would also very much appreciate any rec lists (with a brief explanation of each rec), behind the scenes trivia, or really anything that’s related. I’m not really picky! If I can find a way to get it in then I will.
When’s the deadline?
If you’re busy right now, well, good news, so am I! I’m going to be out of serious action for the next two weeks, and while I’ll do my best to respond to any questions in that time, I absolutely can’t do anything too editorial until after that. All this to say, the final submission date will probably be some time mid-August, but I can keep it open if that’s too soon. Take the 15th of August as your working deadline if you’d like one.
How do I get a copy?
When everything’s done and sorted out, I’ll make a PDF (printable) available on my blog, and if you’d like to directly be sent this file, let me know and I will send it to you. I can’t print any myself, unfortunately. It will be completely free, in case you were wondering.
Hopefully that’s a helpful summary! Reblogs would be much appreciated :)

Okay, let's see what I can say about this one. No, it's not very culturally sensitive. And it's cheesy. It was the 1980s. I can't believe Clarence took this role, though. I mean, wow. Papa Theodore in S&H was scarier (yes, S&H had their own zombie episode - which one was worse? The title of that one was, "Starsky and Hutch on Playboy Island." At least MV had a catchy title. But as I’ve said before, I don’t watch for the plot, so let’s move right into the good stuff.
Papa Legba is an actual loa, in Vodun. So it was rather disrespectful to have the cult leader take that name. Rico's pretty dismissive, but I can see where he'd have his reasons.
Rico: Maybe that’s why they call him ‘late’. These two. Always telling stupid jokes, and the other thinks it’s the greatest joke ever told. But Sonny often looks especially beautiful when Rico's making him laugh. Rico is immediately captivated by Legba's former gf, and Sonny tells him, "Easy there, Romeo." I don't think that's the only time he's called Rico Romeo, is it? Hmm...
Rico: This scene is not serene. He really is a poet.
Another great (and popular) scene between them. See? Not such a bad ep if you just ignore the plot, like I do. It was so cute when Sonny salutes Marty and Rico cracks up.
We also get another lovely late-night sleepy car scene. I don't know why I find them so intimate. Maybe just because it's Rico and Sonny. 😉
Marie is very pretty. Rico does have excellent taste; gotta give him that. Well, except for Sonny. 😉🤣 /jk
Rico: So why don’t you go bust him? Sonny: For what, impersonating a dead man? Me: How about suspicion of murder, since you saw him leaving the scene of a crime?
But Rico, baby, it’s not that funny. Geez.
This ep also gives us a badass Gina scene, where she takes down a big, buff assassin. She really does have a pretty good kill record, doesn’t she? Truly female Sonny.
It was all fun and games until Sonny's baby wanted to go undercover. Poor Sonny. Rico is the big damn hero, always going into dangerous situations alone. Maybe we need to ask ourselves why? Oh Rico, we haven't even begun exploring your depths! What a shame. His character is SO rich in complexity.
Having another public 'moment' -- and it's also another of those scenes with the optical illusions that make it look like they're holding/touching hands... (or is it an illusion? 😉). Always love Trudy’s fashions. She always looks fabulous. Trudy tried to help Sonny in his attempt to stop Rico, for all the good it would do.
And we've got Worried Sonny TM. This ep has all the Sonny/Rico good stuff, folks! Sonny is right, of course; Rico is underestimating the situation. Is Rico going to listen? No. Is there anything Sonny can do? Nope, just wait and worry. Sonny-Worry is one of the best things in the whole world... (deep sigh).
Rico: I can handle it. And he says it twice, looking at Marty and then Sonny. The thing is, Rico is right. This is the job. He is doing his job, period. The fact that there are extenuating circumstances (Sonny being in love with his partner) is beside the point.
Of course, Rico isn't happy to have his partner and his boss fretting over him. Aww, Marty really cares, too.
See, we even get a worried Castillo! After Rico leaves the room, he walks over to Sonny to say "Stay close to him.” I love the dynamic between the two of them through the series; it's so fascinating.
Oh, so now, the next morning when he's about to go under, Rico is worrying. I changed my mind, Sonny should give him a smack. LOL. And poor Sonny (right below), his partner is missing!
I wonder how Legba knew Rico was a cop? Maybe Marie let it slip when he had her drugged up. So, Legba puts the suggestion into Rico’s mind that his courage will be gone and his nerves shot. And pretends to kill Marie to reinforce the trauma. He doesn’t know our Rico very well. He’s stronger than that.
Can’t get over how Sonny recognized Rico’s mostly hidden jacket at a glance. And wondering if his partner was still alive? It has now become his emotional support jacket.
Poor baby is having a really rough time. 'Cause that’s how I roll. If Sonny is hurt or in danger, I’m sad for Rico, if Rico is hurt/in danger, I’m sad for Sonny. The person who’s actually the hurt one? Meh. I’d rather use their Achilles heel to make them suffer (hurting the one they love).
That was also quite a filming choice: having Sonny see and grab Rico’s jacket, carrying it with him until they found him, so it could be draped over him. Very dramatic.
Love Sonny pulling Rico to him and embracing him. Too bad it's a distance scene.
C'mon, pretty eyes, come back to Sonny.
Let me tell you, it's a good thing many of these scenes have been videoed and screencapped over and over, because it was really tough only having a 30-image limit. A lot of great ones I couldn't include. I think this is my fav from the hospital scene, the way Sonny is looking down at Rico and Rico is clutching Sonny's jacket.
I had to LOL at the others' reactions when Rico is trying to choke Sonny (thinks he's Legba): the lab dude backs up, freaked out, and Castillo is just standing there watching, and no one even tries to help Sonny as he's being strangled by his partner. 😁😂🤣
Yeah, cheap thrills. Hey, you can’t get Rico vulnerable; it rarely happens. Even when he’s gone undercover alone and getting the shit beat out of him. The only way is to drug him out of his fucking mind. Another reason this is a great ep for us shippers.
Sonny and Marty, united in their worry about Rico. 🧡 Sonny sticks up for Rico, saying that seeing Marie killed in front of him and not being able to do anything about it just rattled his cage a little; he’ll be okay.
Honey, I don't think Rico's cage is the only one that's been rattled.
And to Rico, Sonny says, "Sure you’re up to this?"
But Sonny knew that Rico had to do it himself, regain his courage and confidence, and overcome Legba’s conditioning attempt. I like to think Sonny's faith in him helped. Yeah, I know it’s a lame plot – but can you imagine if it was a good, serious plot? Without zombies? With the same themes of Sonny-worry and Rico overcoming vulnerability? That would be an amazing episode.
How happy Sonny is when it's over and he knows Rico is back to his old self! (But is he?? Sounds like fanfic fodder...).
This episode is special because of the quality of physical closeness between them. We don’t get that a lot, besides more casual stuff like arms around shoulders (even their one hug had to take place with a table between them). As much as those are wonderful, there isn’t the same type of physical intimacy Starsky and Hutch have (full body hugs, crying in each other's arms, etc). I really think they had to go lighter on the physical stuff, because there's no way anyone would believe they are platonic if they didn’t. Because of how intense Sonny and Rico's relationship is without those overt signs. The ones they do show have an intimacy that is hard to explain away with friendship.
I mean, I consider Sonny/Rico -- just as -- if not more obvious than S/H without that same kind of physical display. So if they had done them...
I was making another GIF from this episode earlier and thought I'd go ahead and post this one here by itself. I call it "face plant," and I am inordinately in love with this scene for some reason. 😉
Seriously, can anyone tell me why the only way for me to post a video to Tumblr is to upload it to TikTok first, save it to my computer, and then post? I tried different formats, tried uploading to a hosting site... won't work. This is why I don't make videos or GIFs often, I always have issues and it takes forever to resolve.
@meme-streets I love your tags, I want to marry them!
I give up. Tumblr will NOT let me post any videos, GIFs, either from my own computer OR a hosting site. The only way I can get them to post is if I post them to TikTok first, and then save them to my own damn computer, and then post them. WFT? Anyway, if I ever get them to post, I'll add them.

Back on the slash/ship bandwagon, so if you're not into it, keep scrolling.
This is a mixed bag. Kinda meh episode, kinda dark, kinda boring, but with surprising subtext bouncing around. Including a hint of Trudy/Gina and Stan/Larry!
And Rico is totally off the chain in this episode!
First, while Rico is inside oogling the women in Ivory's catalog, I caught Trudy blatantly checking out her partner as Gina walks past! It needs a GIF to fully appreciate the once-over she gives her, but I don't have the patience for all that.
Hang on, back up. Larry asks where Rico is wearing his mic, and Stan says, ‘You don’t want to know!’ Er, and how does Stan know? Did he help him put it there? Does Sonny know about this? 😉
Bookends in matching blue:
Sonny is calling his partner 'Rico' all over the place in this ep. And Rico... is being weird (yeah, I know -- what else is new?).
In the beginning, when he helps Rosella after the john tosses her into a mirror, Rico seems sympathetic. Then, by the time they visit her in the hospital, he's downright hostile and stays that way the rest of the episode.
I spent a lot of the ep pondering Rico's reaction and going back and forth about it. I mean, it was the opposite of how he was with the rich druggie in the other episode. I wondered if it was some kind of subconscious reaction to the situation being similar to how Angelina was introduced -- a beautiful woman supposedly the arm candy of a powerful, rich dealer. Or maybe he has a 'thing' against heroin addicts specifically. (Hint: I discarded those theories, and also, the screencap below may give you a hint as to what my final theory is).
And then we get some Stan/Larry, too! In the meeting, Gina is talking about Silva and his protege always competing and trying to top each other, and Stan pipes up, saying, "You mean like me and Lar?" And Larry smiles and looks down with a cute/embarrased look! Look at that face!
In The Maze he was sketching, and now Rico is making paper airplanes in a meeting. At least this time he's paying attention!
But his face when Sonny says Rosella wants to help them! That's when I started realizing his attitude might be jealousy.
Rico is totally against having Rosella help them and comes right out and says no. Then Sonny and Rico are doing that thing where they're holding a silent conversation. Like, WTF is going on here?! Why are these two always acting so weird? Below right, Sonny is still giving Rico that look.
This is not a happy face:
It took me a bit to figure out, because this was preemptive jealousy/protetiveness! Like, he knew Sonny was going to get attached to her before he did. Let's be honest, Rico does have a possessive streak a mile wide (look at him with Val), and yes, it does show with Sonny, too.
And god, do I love it!!! 😍😉
I have to admit, Castillo seems to be picking up on something, too. Although I expect his attitude is, I'm not gonna say anything unless I have to... but don't push it.
And then when they are in the car afterward, Rico has the audacity to ask Sonny what's bringing HIM down?! Like, Sonny has shown zero indication so far that he's moody. Rico is the one with the attitude. Good lord, that man comes on strong sometimes. Good thing he's with Sonny, who can handle that.
It’s really gross watching the scenes with Silva and Rosella while knowing the truth. They were not afraid of dark themes in this show; I do respect them for that.
Then there’s the scene on the beach. LOL'd at Sonny’s expressions. Rico says, "When I get tired, I get weird." Oh, is that his excuse?
Another of those scenes where one of them hands something to the other, and neither so much as glance at it, their attention fully elsewhere, yet unerringly know exactly where it is.
Then we have the infamous scene where Sonny asks if Ivory is sure Silva isn't into guys (because apparently Sonny knows what kinds of looks guys are giving him?). And Rico is contemplating all that, probably thinking, "I've been flashing my big brown eyes at you for years now, and you apparently never noticed." Yeah, Rico can flirt and wink at him, and that goes right over his head, but Silva, curious about who almost outbid him on the yacht, and suddenly Sonny's questioning the guy's orientation. I'm unsure if I should trust Sonny's gaydar or not, to be honest.
Going even further into territorial, Rico faces off with Rosella. Good lord, Rico. Obvious much? Does this remind anyone else of Brenda and Danielle?
She tells him to get lost, and Sonny motions for him to leave. He gives Sonny a look. And check out his fingers on the wall. That man is not a happy camper.
And yet another voyeur (McCarthy was the other) who seems to recognize something about these two that no one else does. It makes sense, since they are watchers. Oh yeah, also someone who can probably recognize jealousy, too. Rico watches while Rosella and Sonny kiss. Silva: she knows I like to watch. Rico: (internally) well, I don’t!
They give their cocaine to a gay waiter (are all the waiters on MV gay?). Sonny says Rosella is in over her head. Rico asks, "What about you?"
Sonny says don't worry about Rosella, I can handle her. Rico: see screencap.
Rico decides to call him Crockett here. It’s so cute how they really think calling each other by their last names is gonna keep them from getting too close. That ship sailed a long time ago.
No, because seriously, Sonny was not that bad in this episode. He was pretty level-headed about Rosella and didn't show any signs of overly angsty feelings for her. Rico was the one who was over the top.
In the end, Silva gets what he deserves. A dark theme; it's a good thing there was a lot of shippy stuff to focus on.
I don't know what to say. The character list should give a clue as to the bizarre humor of this one...

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.
It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.
After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful!

The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
Thank you so much!

PS: You can see some regularly-updated statistics about incoming data here, with lots of demography and graphs to peruse!
And yes, you are both elegant. Now go have fun with Arlene...
So what's the deal, anyway? I can't upload this mp4 from my computer to Tumblr or Squidge Image hosting. I had to literally post it to TikTok, and then download it to my computer before it would work. Anyway, enjoy the 5 second fruits of my long labor. 😉

I love these fan-made 'trailers'. They're so cool. I'm rationing my watching of them so I won't go through them all too fast. Lazarus A Game has been making these for years. The most recent was 5 months ago. I love the dedication.
Listen, I've had eight major fandoms and at least five minor ones in my multi-decades participation in fandom. Most of this time was spent as a shipper (primarily slash). Most of these were not canon ships; they relied entirely on subtext. I've been around the block more than a few times, in other words.
I enjoy it; I love subtext. Watching like a hawk for anything that could be taken as "evidence," analyzing everything done and said, sharing squees with other fans... But the thing is, I consciously chose to interpret the characters like that. Yes, they had chemistry (I wouldn't be into them if they didn't), but I also had no trouble accepting that their interactions could be interpreted platonically. Or at least most of their interactions. Even where the actors themselves acknowledged potential. I saw it because I wanted to. Because it was fun. Because the two characters would absolutely make a great couple.
Even Starsky and Hutch (yeah, I said it!), even them. Maybe they're platonic life partners. I could see that if I squint, although they do come the closest to stretching plausible deniability to breaking.
Do you sense where I'm going with this?
Out of every ship I've ever shipped, it's only Sonny and Rico that I'm incapable of seeing in any other way. I'm sorry. I doubt I'll ever be able to see either of them with anyone else (unless the endgame is C/T or it's a casual threesome situation). They belong together. Period. They've been in love for years. There is no plausible deniability. They are OBVIOUS. The flirting, the winking, the jealousy... Rico says the L word and Sonny promptly marries a woman he's known for a couple of days? Give me a break! There is no other explanation for the shit that goes on with them. I could go on and on, but if you're a fan of the show, I'm preaching to the choir. If not, maybe you should give it a watch. It's got this old slasher's seal of approval. 😉
No, they aren't living happily-ever-after; they've been running from it for five years. That, frankly, makes it more obvious. Metas have been written about this. It's so obvious that I still can't, even after 30+ years, wrap my head around the fact that they weren't one of the top ships in fandom.
Maybe it's just me who's that much of a diehard, but for me, these two are different from all the others I've shipped before. I can't help it. That's just the way it is.
