I also hc him as one of the tallest mutants around, lean (for a mutant) and used to towering.

Then this sad weirdo rolls in with the human courier that Keene doesn't entirely trust. Dog's got scars and history and Keene recognizes him as another abused ex-super soldier and would absolutely welcome him into the fold (while also trying to step around Dog's tendency to fixate on whatever authority figure takes his leash because HELL NO he's not going to let the Courier become yet another human giving orders and telling Dog what to do)

Something something PLOT and FEELINGS and Keene trying to blunt some of his edges and go soft instead of sharp because it's just. Jacobstown's mutants have known each other for so long that there's an easy familiarity to it, or at least a sense of pre-rehearsal to most arguments or interactions. There are very few true 'new' mutants or nightkin for them, and Keene--for the first time in a long time--is trying to remember what it’s like to make FRIENDS with someone who doesn't already share that history. Especially with Dog (post-Synthesis) having amnesia.

It should be so easy for Keene to want to just want to hug Dog and protect him from things.

... except the fucker is actually TWO WHOLE FUCKING INCHES taller than him!!! Keene hasn't been eye-level with anyone in ages!!! Much less having to look UP to anyone!!!! HOW FUCKING DARE HE BE TALLER THAN KEENE!!!!
