Caretaker who has kids basically adopting Whumpee as another one of them, and the kids all take their cue from that.
-whumpee watching movies that theyâre definitely too old for, a toddler leaned on them. Neither of them can stay awake for the whole movie and both wake up with a blanket over their laps.
-whumpee having their nails painted and invited for tea parties with teddy bear guests, looking down at their scarred hands holding a tiny tea cup, glittery pink polish scotched over each fingertip, feeling something strange and good and sad unfurling in their chest
-kids not seeing them as anyone other than another sibling, they donât see all the damage, all the things other people side eye and whisper about, they just see their family.
-âtoo coolâ tween dropping the act for just a few minutes to teach whumpee how to play a video game, the two of them awkwardly slouched in beanbag chairs, playing in comfortable silence, Whumpee finally able to stop thinking, thinking, thinking and justâŚplay.
-teenager helping them figure out what they like as far as clothes and snacks and well- everything. Theyâre both going through a process of figuring out who they are and who they will be, in very different ways, but trying it all out is easier together.
-whumpee being fiercely defended by all their new siblings, from the toddler that points and babbles angrily at the random neighborhood cat that spooked them to the teenager shouting down the stranger that made an off comment in the store.
-whumpee getting to be a good older sibling, finally able to be gentle and soft and indulgent of whatever âthe kidsâ wanted, blowing bubbles on the back porch or playing cards or just, being around if they needed. Not having to constantly struggle to survive and getting to live.

So much potential for both physical and mental torment. For the physical kind, it usually depends on exactly how the reset happens. For example, Whumpee wakes up in bed screaming after they "had an uncomfortably lucid dream" of getting hit by a car, or falling, or being murdered, etc. It takes another loop and ~12 hours of dĂŠjĂ vu to realize it was all too real when it somehow happens again.
Emotionally, time loops are the closest equivalent to taking your Whumpee's sanity and wringing it like a wet towel. It would only take a few resets to drive them to panicâ make them desperate to break whatever cycle they've gotten stuck in.
How does Whumpee act after the tenth reset? After the hundredth? Do they give up and spend their day rotting in bed, worrying the people in their life? Do they resort to desperately explaining their situation to friends and family over and over again in hopes they can help?
How much better (or worse) can their loved ones make this ordeal? Imagine the despair of Whumpee's explanation being brushed off as a prank. They'll have that same response every time around, too, unless Whumpee pulls that successive "prediction" trick. Even then, they might not buy it. How much will it take to make their friends believe them?
Besides, what good could Caretaker realistically do here? Whumpee will always reset to the same state physically (in most cases. This can vary). What's the point of performing first aid on someone who is going to wake up in perfect health (or critically injured) the next loop anyway? If Caretaker knows about the loop, their relationship with Whumpee could take a pretty dark turn if CT's solution is mercy killing them so they wake up healthy and alive at the beginning.
Also, I'm obsessed with Whumpee's fear of death and harm totally vanishing after a certain point. They've suffered a grisly end countless times already, it's honestly pointless to keep begging for their life when they know by now how it will end. Not to mention, if they don't immediately die, how horrifying would it be to Caretaker when Whumpee has little reaction to losing a limb or disembowelment? They most likely have no idea how much Whumpee has gone through to reach this point.
To add to that, what happens when Whumpee escapes the loop? They wake up, and nothing is how they've gotten used to it being for the last few weeks, months... years. If they've grown comfortable with the loop, what are they supposed to do now that everything has changed?
Oh my god, and, the mental strain if the loop is more than a day. If you play games, you might be familiar with the frustration of losing progress when you forget to save. Now, picture Whumpee going back to the beginning of a 7-day loop. They'd managed to convince their friends, they tried to get help, they did all they could in all kinds of new ways... and they're still back here. They have to do it all over again if they want another chance at breaking free.
The outside perspective. Whumpee was a kind and joyful person yesterday, and they've undergone a complete transformation seemingly overnight. They don't have any bags under their eyes, but their resting face has become haunted and distant, the light gone without a trace. Their smile is a tired frown, and they speak quietly in a deadpan tone. If Whumpee's reset point is mid-conversation, and they die screaming, everyone around them will be startled and confused when Whumpee randomly shrieks bloody murder and collapses to the ground.
One more thing: if the setting your time loop takes place in involves lots of fighting (perhaps by magic or superpowers), Whumpee would be by far the most frightening opponent to come across. Because, if you belong to the timeline where they survived, you are guaranteed to lose. Whumpee would appear to those around them as this unstoppable force of nature, when in reality they're only where they are because of their boundless tenacity.

I can understand when people don't like this trope. It can be especially hard to innovate upon when repetition unto insanity is the entire gimmick. I, however, have not gotten tired of it years later :3 it'll always be very special to me.
If you read all that, thank you! I tried my best to keep this short, I really did.
Adding to your winged whumpee post; a winged whumpee whoâs forced to keep flying until they drop from exhaustion
!!!! this!!
whumpee escaped from whumper and is so terrified that they dont land, even though they are already weakened from captivity. finally they black out in the middle of nowhere
whumpee forced to action almost like a mailing pigeon, a messenger who is never given breaks, until one message never arrives. whumpee is eventually found collapsed somewhere along the way
whumper threatens whumpee: next time your feet touch the ground, i cut them off. theyâre not out in the open, where whumpee could use the winds to glide. whumpee has to hover in place, until their body gives out and they collapse to the floor
experiments being run on whumpee to see how long / far / high they can fly before collapsing
Imagine a whumpee waking up one day and the doors wonât open, maybe they never close the doors and for once itâs pitch black. No idea what time of day it even is and no idea if thereâs anyone even there to let them out (or if they even would)
writing advice for characters with a missing eye: dear God does losing an eyes function fuck up your neck. Ever since mine crapped out I've been slowly and unconsciously shifting towards holding my head at an angle to put the good eye closer to the center. and human necks. are not meant to accommodate that sorta thing.
other things I'm bitching about but which could still be useful as writing advice for 1 eyed characters:
2. they're going to favor their sighted side, obviously, but it doesn't always manifest in the way you think. when I walk down a hall I walk much closer to the wall on my sighted side than on my blind side. which is the opposite of how it might seem logical to do that bc it means the world at large is on your bad side, but the reason is I can't fucking See the wall if it's right next to me in the blind side and I end up knocking into it.
3. door frames and poles are my enemy. If your character is smart this will not be a problem but for me it is. I am King of walking into shit I could absolutely see but couldn't tell how far away from me it was. on this note, their blind side hand is getting bashed into every jutting out thing in a 5 mile radius.
4. having 0 depth perception is less of a big deal than you'd think it is. Especially with driving. I've become a Much safer and more wary driver because I can't tell how far the other cars are from me. however I fucking suck at parking now. because I can't tell how far the lines are from me either.
5. you know how people who lose limbs get phantom pains? that happens with eyes too but like. phantom sights. for me it's like. a lot of bugs. like every so often my brain will just put something suddenly skittering beside me there. hate that.
6. it is completely possible to "get stuck" somewhere because your ability to tell how wide a space is is just Gone. shopping isles especially where bumping something or Someone is matter of embarrassment or potentially breaking something. it can be legitimately paralyzing and also irritate everyone around you because they can tell there is Plenty of space for you to get your cart through even if you can't.
7. if the eye is still in their skull it can still be the normal kind of painful. Glares off of shiny surfaces causing weird sharp pains you can't figure out the cause of are genuinely one of gods greatest tests of my patience.

A character who is restrained and brutally tortured beyond any sane person's breaking point, again and again and again in more ways than they ever thought possible, suffering indescribable amounts of pain, so exhausted they can barely hold their head up, but is still, somehow, fighting back in any way they can, even if they know it's an exercise in futility. They refuse to give up. There has to be hope of escape. There has to be. And they'll be damned (they try not to think how they're already damned, because if this isn't Hell, than what is?) if they'll give their captor the satisfaction of ever begging.
Their captor loves this about them. It's such an intriguing challenge, digging into their captive's psyche while also inflicting physical pain in increasingly creative ways, searching for that well-hidden thing that will finally break them for good.
But there's a conundrum here. If they do break... thoroughly and finally...
Then the fun ends. A listless, unresponsive victim is just boring. What would be the point of continuing these sadistic games?
And the villain really doesn't think they'll find another quite like this one again. So yes, they keep prodding, keep pushing, but oh, so carefully. They want this to last as long as possible.
I need avian whumpees, I need more traumatized winged people in media so I gave some ideas:
-Wing clipping, it's a great torture method as avians cherish their wings more than themselves. Even if clipped wings will grow back, the mental pain lasts significantly longer and sometimes never leaves. Incorrect clipping is also great as it can permanently ruin whumpees wings.
-Wings can also get tied up as a punishment for disobeying, it can be with metal bands or torn rope that digs into their wings. It's even better if the whumper can grab onto the bindings and drag the whumpee.
-Whumpees being used as living trophies, to the whumper they are just an exotic bird. A status of power and/or wealth. Whumpee follows in whumper's shadow like a pet, they could be in a cage, gagged/muzzled or on a leash.
-I love whumpees being locked in rooms or basements but I also love whumpers who treat the whumpee well, like a rich yet corrupt person pampering an exotic pet. It could be a manipulative thing or just because they see whumpee as a pet to be pampered.
-Forceful preening, to avians preening can only be done by close family, partners or extremely close friends, meaning whumper doing it completely destroys their dignity and crosses their boundaries significantly. The whumpee can either sit there and let it happen or fight back tooth and nail to get whumper away from their wings.
-Whumpees being locked in rooms with mirrors on every wall since (as far as I'm aware) birds get stressed at seeing their reflection all the time.
-Whumpees not actually having living quarters and instead live in a bird cage, even better if it's connected to a chain and hangs off the ground. Leaving whumpees only option to sit defeatedly on the ground.
-Whumper manipulating whumpee by constantly commenting on how 'perfect' and 'adorable' they are, I feel like whumper wouldn't take them too seriously as they just see whumpee as a bird, not a person.
I want more chronic pain whump. Give me a cocky, independent character who suddenly canât walk because a sudden rain storm aggravated their old leg wounds and now they have to lean on a friend to get home. Give me a usually stoic character shaking with pain during a flare up. Give me a character whoâs finally healed having their first bad pain day and abruptly feeling like theyâre back at square one.
nonhuman whumper who doesnt fully know what they are doing.
nonhuman whumper who finds a little scrap of a being and decides to keep it around because it makes them happy. they donât have the cognitive capabilities to fully realise the little scrap of a being is very much sentient, and suffering.
meanwhile the little scrap, whumpee, is living through the terror of being kept for show and amusement by a much stronger, much less intelligent being, that has no idea what whumpee actually needs to survive

Important reminder: this is for birdo blorbos, not actual birds. If you notice that your bird is doing some of the stuff I've mentioned, take them to a vet!
TW: broken bones, blood, injury exhaustion, illness, harm to animals (person animal hybrids, but animal injuries are an important reference,) restraint, hypothermia, brain damage, self harm
Physical injury
Birds bones actually act as air containers. It's harder to breathe when your going very very fast, so they need all the oxygen they can get. This also does make them lighter, which is a nice bonus. Breaking a bone means the area (and entire bird) will get less oxygen. Bird bones are deceptively strong due to the power of triangle's, so they'd be only a little more fragile.
Birds have smaller organs for the purposes of being light enough to fly. This also means they have less muscle and blood. If a birdo blorbo were to get injured in such a way that they'd bleed, they would bleed out much faster than a mammal.
Having feathers plucked also hurts. Feathers will fall out or get loose when they molt, but having a healthy feather plucked hurts. If a feather were to get damaged, they would likely pluck it out so it would grow back faster.
Exhaustion
Flying is hard. If possible, a bird would much prefer to walk. Birds tend to eat smaller, more frequent meals due to smaller intestines. They need a lot of energy to fly. Bird that migrate have figured out a variety of ways to work together and reduce wind and drag. That's why geese fly in V's. If a birdo blorbo is flying alone, they have to brave the wind themselves, which is much harder.
Birds also need lots of sleep (my budgie needs 10 solid hours combined with lots of quick naps) many species can employ unihemispheric sleep. But not all. I cant give a broad strokes picture, but if you have a specific bird in mind, I recommend googling it.
However, if a bird is flying alone, being half awake can be more of a risk. If their in a group, it's all good.
Illness
I can't cover everything, but I can give broad strokes.
Birds with fevers tend to fluff up their feather to let out heat, along with shivering to generate more heat. They don't have sweat glands, so they tend to open mouth breathe to let out heat.
Respiratory infections are common in birds. They tend to open mouth breathe and rub their beaks on things. Birds rub their beaks when healthy, it just happens a lot more when sick. birds can also sneeze. Tail bobbing is also common, but it can just be your bird is weird. Mine will tail bob with one foot tucked in and playing with his toys.
Birds fo itch, and scratch itches. They have random itches like us humans, but they can also get rashes and fungal infections. If a bird itches for a long time often, that could be a sign their sick. Maybe someone could see it, grill them about it...
Moving on.
Clipped wings
Clipping a birds wings is controversial and highly dependent on the bird. I clip some of my budgies secondary feathers and the tips of his primaries due to the fact he tends to get himself in danger. A lot of budgies do not need this, and the decision should always be made with a vet. I'll be referencing what the vet told me and my own experience.
Larger birds with more sensibility and less fragility rarely need their wings clipped unless they have had some other injury or procedure. A birdo blorbo with human intelligence will not need their wings clipped.
Having a birds wings clipped can lead to boredom and frustration. With pet birds, they need constant entertainment and a way to still explore, and I haven't heard of any birds who needed fully clipped wings. (Mine can fly across my house and into the piano. If he wants to get higher, he chirps and I'll lift him up so he can reach.)
A birdo blorbo with enough intelligence to make decisions will probably feel violated, frustrated, and scared. That's a whole axis of mobility they now cannot access. A caretaker would need to find ways to keep the birdo blorbo occupied until their feathers grow back. (My budgie needs them trimmed about every 6-8 weeks.)
Feathers do grow back, usually in a few months. The feathers have no nerves and are made of keratin, so the actual clipping will not hurt.
Restraint
Birds have more fragile bones and bodies, meaning that a whumper or attacker could easily cause serious damage.
Birds are more affected by their environment (see below) so they would be much more affected by the cell and restraints their kept in. Birds also need lots of space, to spread their wings and fly, or to feel less trapped or just walk about.
Birds also breathe with their chest, not their shoulders. Something pressing on their chest would be a lot more dangerous. If you pick up a parrot, you want to hold it gently closer to the neck to allow their chest to move
Birds are also very light. I had a birdo blorbo who's optimal weight was 6 lbs. He was considered tall for his people at around 5 ft. A smaller birdo blorbo could be very easy to throw.
Environmental hazards
Birds feathers serve as an important insulator. Thicker fluffier down feathers can help them survive the cold, while more sleek feathers can keep the heat in check. A bald spot would not be able to regulate temperature as well.
Birds do not get sunburn, and can use sunlight to heal dna. Birds also do not have brown fat, meaning that if they were in a cold environment, they would have a harder time staying warm
They can spread blood flow to their beaks and legs to let out more heat. In the cold, they can restrict the blood flow to keep heat from escaping.
Birds have a gland in the base of their tails that allows them to water proof their feathers. Birds spread this oil with their beaks. If a bird were to get wet, they would be more susceptible to hypothermia. A birdo blorbo would want to get out of the water as fast as possible. Penguins and water foul are an exception due to their excellent water proofing.
Brain damage
birds have smaller more densely packed brains. You can just say that their brains are pretty much human brains, which would make sense. if you want to play with bird brains, wikipedia has a very good article that is full of jargon but they define it.
Birds would likely have greater effects than humans. The part of the brain that controls basic functions like breathing and heartbeat is also at the back of their heads, but lower down. This is why headless mike lived so long. (A chicken who survived having his head cut off.)
The celebrum or personality part is in the front of the head like humans.
Psychological effects.
I'm assuming that your birdo blorbo has cognition similar to a human. A lot of the same trauma and unhealthy coping would apply.
Birds are prone to depression, often feather plucking when bored. Birds may also destroy things for a lot of the same reasons humans impulsively destroy things. A birdo blorbo who went through the wringer is as likely as a human to fall into bad habits.
Parrots are very similar to humans, and incredibly social. Raptors often spend their time alone. But all birds have a mate, wether for life or a season. Lots of birds are monogamous, and tend to form close lifelong bonds with their mate. The breaking of these bonds can cause birds to die from heartbreak. If the whumper was close to them, that could mean death no matter the specifics.
characters that are just. flat. after itâs over. on purpose. refusing to show the scar tissue and determined to keep moving forward. curt conversations. dressing their wounds but not resting and eating without enjoying it. practical to the point of brutality. one foot in front of the other. if they can just be nothing they donât have to be hurt, and if they arenât hurt it never happened.
Currently writing something where a worse au version of a character made a deal and ended up in the normal characterâs body so just started thinking about possibilities,
Characters dating or really close to the whumpee noticing small differences in their behavior, lost skills or gained skills, or odd gaps in their memories
The guilt once they realize the person they were being loving or caring towards is not who they think they are
Characters finding subtle way to test theories about whether itâs actually Whumpee or not
Caretaker being taken over by whumper and whumpee losing trust in them
Whumpee realizing itâs no longer caretaker theyâre with
Whumpee being replaced by a copy so those around them donât pick up on the fact theyâre gone
Whumper replacing Whumpee, swapping mind or otherwise and harming caretaker and other Whumpees with those around them believing itâs actually Whumpee
A small habit of whumpers such as an involuntary smile or the way they speak being the dead give away of who they actually are
That building fear as they realize thatâs not the one they care about, perhaps even a monster whoâs masquerading with the personâs face and no idea whether the real them is dead or alive
The one whoâs been replaced trapped in the body of the one in thereâs, believed to be a criminal, someone evil, or someone hated
If they donât take care of themself, the one whoâs been swapped trapped in a body of injuries they inflicted out of defense towards whumper or in defense for them.
If possessed, perhaps trapped in their body forced to watch what happens but unable to interfere
Whumpee doing everything they can to get back only to find out their team it those they care about had no idea they were replaced until they appear again, worse for wear to their copy doing well
Or on the other hand, the ones they care for already having figured it out and been searching to find them.
If possessed or mind swapped, the ones they care about having to be careful because any harm towards the whumper/ possessor will harm the whumpee
Whumpees with aching eyes, too tired to keep open yet too sore to close, even the lightest pressure of their eyelids too much
Whumpee who's too weak and dizzy to do anything at all but lie in bed completely still, sweating through their blankets only to immediately start shivering after clumsily throwing them off
Whumpees with dry mouths, dry lips
The corners of their room are more shadowy than they should be, and they're too exhausted to bother to get up and see what's in there. The Hat Man will have to just wait his turn.
Strong enough to get out of bed but being so, so out of it. Caretaker finding them standing swaying in a doorway, pale as death, clearly seeing something that isn't there
Everything seems to be flickering. The air buzzes. Their skin prickles.
Getting to sleep is hard, because their mind is restless and racing. Once they're asleep though, they're down for the count
Chattering teeth. Their bones must be rattling, for how much they ache
⢠Somebody pressing a concerned hand to their forehead, then sucking in air through their teeth in sympathy.
⢠Colors looking hazy/brighter as their temperature spikes
â˘Teeth chattering around an oral thermometer until it flashes in an angry red
⢠âI told you, Iâm fine.â âWell, should I believe you or the thermometer?â
⢠Feebly curling around a heating pad/hot water bottle just trying infuse some warmth into their bones
⢠A friend notices they look unwell. Friend goes in for a hug or places a hand on their shoulder as a casual display of affection, but also to sneakily gauge their temperature. Just as they suspected, theyâre burning up.
Because Iâm very caffeinate sensitive if on an empty stomach or at a certain threshold, just thought about the possibilities for scenarios
Imagine:
Whumpee having too much coffee inadvertently, maybe when casually hanging out and having to act normal despite struggling to focus with the overactivity they feel due to too much caffeine
Bonus for above: The Dreadâ˘ď¸ (just increased sudden anxiety from nowhere in particular from having too much caffeine, no idea if this is universal with caffeine sensitivity or not)
Whumpee being forced to stay awake by caffeine injections and chewing nails, biting lips, cheeks, canât focus except for the feeling their heart is beating too fast
Pacing, movement, need to move, need something to do but your mind is telling you a million things to do
Knowing you need to eat but you canât, you feel full but sick, you feel unable to because you need to move, you need to focus
Whumpee has just a small drink of coffee too late and now unable to sleep, too much energy, and not realizing itâs late in the night until you take a glance at the time and wonder why they donât feel tired and feeling no need for it but know they need to or else theyâll be exhausted tomorrow
Having to be precise but youâre moving too much, hard to keep still
Just some random ideas from random experiences. Donât know how often others with sensitivity feel these but just thought it could bring some interesting ideas
