On Thursday, October 23, around 10 am, my mom went outside to clean our back yard. Somehow a fire got started by our garage and my mom got caught by the fire. My dad had come home from work a few hours earlier and was sleeping in his bedroom. He heard my mom’s screams outside and quickly ran out. He saw her in burning in flames. My dad quickly grabbed the water hose and tried to put the fire out of my mom and the garage. In the process of trying to save my mom, my dad also got caught on fire. After the flames were put out, my dad carried my mom inside and he laid her down on her bed. He brought wet pieces of clothes and blankets and tried to cool her body down. When the ambulances came, they took both my parents to the nearest hospital. My parents were treated at the emergency room, but unfortunately the hospital did not have a burn unit. An air ambulance then flew my parents out to Rockford’s medical center. The doctors performed surgery on my mom, but they could not save her because she lost 97% of her skin. They said she burned in the flames for approximately four to five minutes before my dad was able to put it out. My dad on the other hand burned about 35-40% of his skin. The doctors performed skin grafting surgery to help him heal. My dad will be at the ICU for at least 2 months to recover and he will then require therapy afterwards. It is heartbreaking to lose our mom. She had a great life planned, but it was her time to go. We all miss her very much. My parents brought us to the U.S. in 2003. We filled for an asylum case and have been fighting for our stay in the U.S. for 11 years. After a long struggle, our case was finally granted 3 months ago. We were a year away from getting our green cards approved, which would soon allow us to gain our citizenship. My parents provided us with the best lifestyle. They sacrificed so much and left their family back home to provide us with the best education. My mom was a housekeeper and she took care of her 4 children. My dad is self-employed and he ran his business from home. Due to our legal status at the time, we were unable to apply for health insurance. Because of this tragic incident, our family is no longer earning an income. Our medical bills, house bills, mortgage, and business expenses are starting to pile up. I am only 18 and I am trying my best to manage all my dad’s financial expenses, but I am struggling to make our payments due to insufficient funds in our bank account. Any donations will be highly appreciated.
