I know spiders are among the animals many people fear, and I understand that. A phobia is not something you can simply reason away.

Even so, I think it is a pity, because spiders are extraordinary animals. The closer you look, the more remarkable they become. In these photographs you can see the spider drawing silk from its spinnerets, a reminder of the astonishing engineering that spiders carry with them wherever they go.

Spiders are also among nature's most important predators, helping to keep insect populations in balance. I am convinced that the more we learn about them, the easier they become to appreciate. You do not have to love spiders, but perhaps knowledge can replace at least a little of the fear with curiosity and respect.

SIDDIG: A lot of gay men at that time, and maybe even gay women, kinda responded to the Bashir character. I think that was because of (Garashir), and maybe the bravery of not only that, but also an implicitly Muslim character being potentially gay, potentially bi, potentially gay if they’d explored that route. That is something Garak brought with him to the party, a bottle of implied homosexuality…

LLOYD [interviewer]: So were you aware in the 90s that it was homoerotically charged and on board with that? SIDDIG: I was aware of it in the back of my mind, yes, absolutely, and encouraged it. At my first meeting with Garak I became visibly flustered. That was entirely my choice. It wasn’t written into the script. So I set off in that direction right from the get-go. And Andy (Andrew Robinson) obviously loved it, and that character became a series-long character because of that first scene…

LLOYD: That’s really cool. We’ve heard a lot of times about how Andy and Garak were on board from the start but I don’t know that I’ve heard before that you were on board from the start. SIDDIG: I subconsciously keep that door open with just about every character that I play, and I always keep it as ambiguous as possible. One of my first roles was in A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia with Ralph Fiennes and I played Feisal and again, not in the script, but that was charged with homoerotica and implied homosexuality. I’d just come fresh off that project. And I’ve done it numerous times since, characters that are written straight I just make sure are not quite straight. That’s just one of my things, probably because I’m not quite straight myself and that’s probably perfect.

Bringing in what I said in the group chat: they wouldn't survive in the LiveJournal communities that raised me.

If you wanted a place for just your ship, you made your own fanfiction archive for it and you maintained and moderated it yourself. And most of these only existed because it made it easier to find fics for your OTP, not because the sight of other ships disgusted you.

Have an issue with something you see on a kink meme? Don't read through the comments on the kink meme or wait until the Delicious board is up and filter just the tags you want.

If someone brought up fic or shipping to an actor, a containment breach klaxon would go off and everyone would talk shit in the private LJ and Dreamwidth communities. You did not make ship wars the problem of the actors, show runners, directors, or writers. That was internet bullshit that stayed on the internet. If someone became aware of it on their own, fine, but that was exceedingly rare. You definitely didn't ask shipping questions to the actors if you were a "journalist."

You shipped what you shipped, you were into what you were into, you left people alone, and you did not wave any of it in the face of the actors.

So yeah, bring back the old fandom culture. Please. Let shippers and the actors have some goddamn peace.

spent forty-five minutes today helping an 87yo woman who does not own a computer or a cell phone try to set up an email account so that she could then set up a second account in order to access benefits. went with protonmail, because they don't require 2fa, but it turns out that while you can still make a protonmail account without authentication you can no longer use it to create OTHER accounts without it, and the benefits page she needed to get to required both an email and a cell phone to create an account anyway. asked if she wanted to try going in person to see if someone there could help her, and she said that she had, and they'd directed her to the website. she tried signing up with her landline, but of course that didn't work because you can't do SMS authentication that way. finally ended up writing up detailed instructions for how to log in and authenticate her account so she can drive to her severely disabled daughter's house forty minutes away because that's the only person she knows and trusts who has both a cell phone and a computer.

anyway i fucking hate mandatory 2fa and i think the people responsible for it should have to spend a year navigating their lives with no cell phone and no internet access beyond the public library pcs. fuck.

unpopular opinion probably but I actually like that ao3 doesn’t let people take back their kudos.

unlike social media platforms (which ao3 is not) where people unlike stuff whenever they think or find out the original posters’ moral compass doesn’t perfectly align with their own’s or whatever, and “likes” can be taken back at any time, ao3 treats kudos as something sacred. once you give it, it’s the author’s to keep forever.

(one random comment about my fanfiction, which was said during the conversation): "You're devoting energy, time, and attention to a project that's not gaining massive popularity, you don't have a fanbase, you don't get comments on every chapter, you don't get likes, and no one pays you for it, so why are you doing it? What's the point? If you'd devoted the same amount of effort to original ideas, you would have written a bestseller long ago."

The answer is simple: Because it gives me pleasure, it gives me satisfaction, and I want to do it. I don't need anything more.
