This should be mandatory reading for therians. Please read it and reflect on how your theriotype fits into it

Are you nonhuman, alterhuman, otherkin? Are you queer? Take our survey!!! This survey is gonna be used to see if creatures view there queerness and non-humaneness+ as connected and if so in what ways!
Exploring the intersection of nonhuman and queer identities
These questions are completely anonymous and some are skip able
you know the more i've interacted with therian online the less i actually care about. the actual label. draconic communities had it right its like. a fucking spectrum from guy who is very into their fursona to actively trying to find a way to species transition and i think making false walls between them reduces the richness of being speciesweird
picrew chain time because i'm bored again!
do this picrew
then tell me how you chose your username!
i'll start. i have two usernames: one on main and one here. on my main account (@/depressinge), it was a reference to rush e. i thought "what if it was played really slowly and sadly instead of properly" and then i thought that idea was the funniest thing ever. so that became my username. yeah. fourteen (or fifteen? i can't remember) year old me was an interesting creature.
my user on this account was just something i thought sounded cool. because sky rhymed with jai and then i thought i'd add storm because it sounded cooler. it kind of alluded to nya and jay so i also liked that (because sky and storm are related to their elements). i came up with before i even had a tumblr account, wrote it on a scrap of paper, and hid it in my desk so that no one would but me would ever know about it. when i finally made this sideblog around a year later, i had my username burned into my brain, so i didn't even need the paper to remember it. i tore the paper up into a hundred pieces so that there would be no evidence left. again, i was an interesting creature.

Its kinda interesting how I've only leaned into my nonhumanity over time. All the same, Im still me. And I still love pastels

You can still see the themes of Voidcat in the original, its just more prominent in the new one with the grey and white.
My username is stupid (loving) and convoluted (not really). Ill save that for another time if people are actually interested. Lol. Ive already added so much to this post.

Here's a decidedly non-nonhuman take on myself. That part of myself has been hard to express lately. And the picrew kemonomimi solution doesn't do it for me! This is just as close as I could get to the outfit I wore today. I need a hotter wardrobe.
My username comes from a song I really liked at the time I made my blog. I used it as a username for a bunch of stuff, and I was one of those people that would change usernames very frequently. This one just stuck for some reason. I have close friends that literally call me "Mouse" now.

Hello fellow creatures, I need some advice.
Ive been dealing with some mad genital dysphoria this spring. For both species and gender reasons.
And for whatever reason, my usual species affirming packers arent helping much. đ
Ive found that general gear seemed to stop helping altogether recently, but thats a different post.
Anyone have any other tricks or tips on dealing with genital dysphoria?
The problem with trying to 'solve' therianthropy OR 'How can you be X if Y is true?' a useless discourse
Preface: Although my concentration is on therianthropy, a lot applies to general nonhumanity regardless of label.
It is often commented that it is difficult to define what a 'therian' is whilst being truly accurate. It is a source of frustration that this is so, as it makes it feel vaguer than it really is and yet, it cannot be accurately described at least not in a concise manner, whilst attempting to provide full information.
The most accurate definition to me is;
Yep, TikTok screwed up by allowing people to remix your videos using AI.
Fortunately they allowed you to opt out
Unfortunately you have to literally go through every single video you posted in order to opt out.
In the privacy settings on each video, you have to turn off "Allow AI to remix content" on EVERY video. That includes all your old videos and any new ones made.
I want everyone here to be fully aware that TikTok is actively hurting people who make ANY type of videos on their platform by even having this option in the first place.

which planet are you?
Zoesthesia & Therianthropy
There is currently no word for "the experiences that give rise to therianthropy." The therian community has a million different terms for pieces of it - mental shifts, phantom shifts, sensory shifts, etc. I propose a new term. Hear me out:
Zoesthesia ("zo-esthesia", from the Greek "zĹion" [life/animal] and "aisthesis" [perception]): "The subjective inner non-human animal experiences that give rise to therianthropy." Therianthropy is an identity. Zoesthesia is the root of that identity, and can include all forms of shifts therians have previously described. Zoesthesia can be experienced from a young age and can occur before one's identity forms, before one knows the words for what they're experiencing. It is the "happening" behind the curtain - instinct. Consider:
It's neutral, even if it sounds like it implies a neurological bias.
It doesn't replace "therianthropy" as a term.
It sounds similar to synesthesia - the crossing of the senses in the brain, which is not seen as a disorder.
It's a spectrum, just like synesthesia - everyone's experiences are different.
Using "zoesthete" instead of "therian" is possible, though it does not imply any sort of identity, nor does it imply that one interprets these experiences as belonging to any specific non-human animal. This is primarily to describe "therianthropy underneath the hood."
It is not exclusive. We could use it to account for spiritual experiences as well - past life memories, "auras," the whole nine yards. If you think about it, all of those things also occur in your brain. Literally everything does. Your brain is hallucinating its own version of reality right now, and everything "spiritual" that you believe is just based on something your brain experienced. And everything that appears to be "external" is a recreation of it by your neurons.
What's The Point?
I suggest this because of the latest happenings globally within the therian community. A lot of young people in China, for example, think that "therian" is a fandom they can join. Younger folks globally should know that becoming more aware of the happenings in their consciousness is the point - not joining a fandom or getting likes on TikTok.
I believe that the way we do that is by turning the focus beyond identity, toward the inner experiences that lead to that identity. Time and time again, I've heard non-therians say "You can't identify as an animal, that's just not possible." There are significantly more convincing ways to talk about the experiences we have. Zoesthesia has my vote.
A more general, similarly neutral version of this that would apply to all alterhumans would be "allosthesia," from the Greek "allos" (other) and "aisthesis."
What are your thoughts?
I'd use it!
Nah.
"You can't choose to be a therian or otherkin" sounds more batshit if you swap it out with transgender
"You can't choose to be transgender, you have to be born that way--" Who the hell are you lmfao
I've straight up seen people pull the 'it's like being trans, and you can't choose to be trans' thing and I love to jump out of the online bushes at them like, "Hello! I'm a transgender guy who decided to be a guy! I could have been happy as very many gender presentations including my original assigned one, but I picked this one myself and all my health care professionals even agreed that I could! I'm also voluntarily nonhuman, because you're right about at least one point: those two identities are very similar in many ways! Would you like to amend your statement in light of my being a real person who exists and is now in this discussion?"
And you know what, they never have a very clear response to that. They're always kind of banking on getting to use voluntarily trans people as a prop and don't expect one to show up and crash the party.
Like, transmedicalist ideology was rancid enough applied to being trans. It's not any better applied elsewhere and it belongs in a hole in the ground, not in the alterhuman and nonhuman communities.
Edited to add because it just occurred to me: For extra batshit-sounding opportunities, imagine someone being like, "You can't call yourself a trans woman. You have to call yourself a womanlinker, because you're choosing to be femme, and that's not the same thing as actually being femme!"
I'm sure someone THAT RANCID actually exists but I am choosing to believe that we can all recognize that it's a fucking atrocious take that nobody should have.
tiktok therians are HARD stuck on keeping âinvoluntaryâ in their definition- and it makes me cringe every time. I know theyre just going through the same stage this part of the community has gone through with respectability politics and all that (and I do see the pushback starting to grow). But damn its rough.
Like, there's no reason you cant actively choose to be a therian or otherkin. Hell, back on the forums a HUGE talking point was how to INDUCE shifts and create more voluntary nonhuman experiences for yourself.
I also remember that Cautious-Callum did an experiment where he tried to create a voluntary theriotype/kintype. Which I believe he considered a success in the end. @cautious-callum please correct me if I'm wrong :)

On Chosen Identity and the Optics of Authenticity
by The Liondrake(s)
Blurb: A personal essay in which I discuss the nuances of having a chosen identity. I also break down my thoughts on perceived âseriousnessâ or authenticity within the community regarding choice.
Choice is a complicated subject within the nonhuman community. Whether or not it's fully accepted depends on who youâre asking. If you ask me, Iâd say yes but also no.
I say "fully" because there's plenty of individuals who'll say that they support or recognize their peers who chose their identities, but only if they identify this way under a broad label (like nonhuman) or a specific label like otherlinker. Calling oneself a chosen therian or chosen otherkin strikes a chord in complete strangers who feel like it's their duty to "correct" the language of other complete strangers.
Chosen identity is usually acknowledged in one of two ways:
It's "valid", but it's not as important to an individual as identities that aren't chosen.
It's "valid", but it's not as serious as identities that aren't chosen.
Neither approach treats our experiences with as much grace or understanding as other experiences.
It adds insult to injury in seeing discussions around our "validity" in general (i.e. asking if we even belong in this community). There's more of that than any discussion around what it's like for us to choose or the significance of choice in our identities.
Iâve addressed my grievances before in Involuntariness, Voluntariness, and the Stigmas in Between, but I decided to revisit my thoughts in an organized piece. I also decided to discuss my relationship with choice. Iâm collectively quoiluntary. In being quoiluntary, my relationship with origin doesnât fall neatly on either side of this framework.
Personally, I experience all manners of origin but Iâll be focusing on the identities Iâve chosen in this essay. Iâm only one person, and although itâs not guaranteed, I hope that my experiences can at least open some minds when it comes to chosen identity.

Some fiction is alterhuman. Not as in the story is about literal alterhumanity but as in the way that it develops and explores is its own themes has an angle of... understanding something, to it. Not every story that features the perspective of a nonhuman character is alterhuman, to me. A book can feature the perspective of an animal character in a way that doesn't seem to want to sink itself into what it actually means to be an animal. Characters are easily relatable, but at the expense of depth that is actually species-specific in nature. I don't think something like Warrior cats or Wings of Fire is alterhuman fiction, despite being popular books among alterhumans. Characters may exist in a body with claws or wings but their way of rationalizing the world is not aligned to a speciesqueer perspective.
It was definitely The Summer Hikaru Died that made me think of this most recently but I was also thinking about it intensely when I was reading Runaway to the Stars and The Murderbot Diaries. They have a layer of actual thoughtful understanding beneath the veneer of a nonhuman character. A willingness to explore a character that is something "other" in a way that doesn't subconsciously either consider them less worth exploring than a normally-human character or make their species negligible.
Anyway there's a line from The Murderbot Diaries I keep in my mind pocket at all times that contextualizes this thought for me and makes its own point why it (and other things that meet this criteria) touch on something not all xenofiction does, which is
a recognition of not just the nonhumanity of the perspective character, and not just the separation that results from that, but the reason in itself why so much other xenofiction unintentionally fails at the same thing.
The more I think on it, this might just be a more specific concentrated part of a larger issue I have with a lot of speculative fictionâespecially fiction that focuses on (or tries to focus on) grounded perceptions of impossible and unreal situations. Not just alien and robot and fantasy creature/talking animal xenofiction, but psychological and body horror, time travel sci-fi, isekai fantasies...
I was thinking in particular about body horror this morning (normal to think about body horror immediately when you wake up) so that's where I'll start from but like. I love good body horror, but a lot of what's been made just does not interest or scare me, because it will portray the physical impossibility, and it will portray the emotional reactions of characters, but it won't cross the bridge between them. It'll say what and then it'll say how but it doesn't say why. The impossibility is happening, the character is experiencing it, but there's something in between that that's kind of nameless, right? Werewolf story that describes the character's body changing and then describes the character's pain or fear but it doesn't really connect the two things because that's harder to conceptualize about something that obviously isn't actually real or experienced by anyone in real life, as opposed to imagining what it probably looks like and being able to recall times you've been afraid in your life. Xenofiction writers will talk about how the robot character is treated and they'll talk about the ways their robot character feels about that but it won't use the bridge of that actual hypothetical existence to get there.
It's hard to articulate
y'all, nows the time to start doing more.
a lot of you have responded to the attacks on therians in multiple countries in south america (and apparently europe now, from what i'm hearing) with tucking your tail between your legs and going "see, we are oppressed!"
so? what are you going to do about it? we cannot just sit here and idle. even if you cannot be there in the moment, we need to start building a foundation of which we can make a change. and that foundation is not built off of vibes-based politics. we have to actually start thinking about how we will reach our own liberation.
think about the physical attacks that have happened in our community. who are the victims who have been injured? is there any way we can provide financial aid towards them in regards to getting medical treatment? have they spoken up about anything? how are we going to handle this going forward?
who are the people who are actively in areas that have had these attacks? have they talked about what the environment is like? we need to start giving folks who are actually directly harmed by this a platform to elevate their voices. by learning more from those who are actually directly having this happen to them, we can start to build a foundation in which we learn how to go forward.
the answer to this situation is not to keep hiding in the shadows, hoping that there is a part that is dark enough to hide us for good and for people to forget about us. there is no more shadow to hide in. so what will we do now?
we cannot let the community continue to just be a fun little space for people to hide away and ignore the troubles of the world. this has harmed members within our own community, primarily those racialized, and it is now more than ever a behavior that will hurt the whole community.
change starts with you. so let's actually try and make some productive change.
Currently information in English is fairly sparse, but: the jist seems to be that Latin American media began talking about and sensationalising therians. As a result, right-wingers in Spain and several Spanish-speaking countries and territories, such as Mexico, Argentina and Puerto Rico, started producing viral content to throw fuel on the fire.
Fake videos have been created with AI showing theriform dogs attacking therians. (News article in Spanish debunking the videos.)
Fake meetups were organised hastily in an attempt to gather real therians so they could be attacked. Not many actual therians showed up, but a few did. Here's a post from a therian which includes videos and photos showing assaults, and talks about the AI posters.
This news article mentions that in the state of YucatĂĄn, a therian attending a meetup was pelted with eggs by a young woman who was later arrested.
Here's another Tumblr post by a therian discussing it. In the comments, other therians mention stories they've heard, in particular this Puerto Rican therian who talks about attacks on children.
Lastly, here's an article from the media outlet Plataforma about the general trend.
