What helped me write trauma better is remembering that the nervous system learns predictions. If danger used to come after quiet, calm can feel threatening. If kindness used to come with a price, kindness can feel suspicious. So healing is not just “they know they’re safe now.” Healing is the slow, annoying, deeply unfair process of teaching the body that the old prediction is not always the present truth.
A Brief Summary on the Monoceridae Family and its Domesticated Subspecies
The Monoceridae family, placed within the Pecora infraorder, are defined as even-toed hoofed mammals with ruminant digestion, and are easily identified by their prominent cranial appendages. These unique and distinctive horns have lead the two extant species remaining within this family to both be colloquially known as Unicorns.
Exhibit 1a - Eurasian Unicorn
Exhibit 1a contains an artistic depiction of the Eurasian Unicorn, one of two extant species. In spite of the historic region of the Eurasian Unicorn containing the forest regions of Northern Europe and the Western Siberian hemi-boreal forests, most of this historic range has been lost and the species is declared extinct in Russia, the UK and Scandinavia. The IUCN estimates that remaining numbers of wild Eurasian Unicorns stand at approximately 1400. Most of the remaining population are limited to protected areas of the Schwarzwald forest, though unsubstantiated sightings have been spotted in Poland, Czechia and France.
Exhibit 1b - North American Unicorn (mare and foal).
North American Unicorns differ from their cousins in being adapted to survive the mountainous and desert regions of North America. Unicorns are observed to be attentive parents - juvenile N.A. Unicorns bear dappled coats that help them camouflage against bare rock and scrub flora, which is shed when maturity is reached.
Likewise to it's cousin, N.A. Unicorns are also considered Critically Endangered, with numbers estimated at approximately 2,100, limited almost exclusively to the mountainous regions of Arizona. Human-projected properties of the horn itself has been identified as the biggest threat to both species - historically Unicorns associated with human virtues such as "nobility" and "purity" and were even considered to be "magical" in property; as such, consuming or possessing a Unicorn was said to cure medical malaise or bring good fortune or wealth to a bearer. Medical benefits of Unicorn horn consumption has yet to be validated by modern science.
Domestication of Unicorns
2a - "Abjohn", a Domesticated Unicorn Buck
Despite records indicating that Unicorns were attempted to be domesticated from the Roman period, such attempts were predominantly unsuccessful, with many Unicorns appearing "stubborn" or uncooperative with training. In spite of this, many European Courts kept Eurasian Unicorns as part of Royal Menageries as symbols of wealth and power.
In the 1600s, a buck named Abjohn was born with unusual markings to a mare then owned by Elizabeth the 1st of England - these markings are now understood to be leucism. Being born alongside English naval victory against the Spanish Armada, the birth of Abjohn was considered a mark of divine blessing. Many foals were made to be sired by Abjohn in order to replicate his white markings, which quickly became a desirable feature for domesticated Unicorns. Abjohn is thus considered the "father" of the domestic Unicorn.
2b - Miniature Domesticated Unicorn As breeding initiatives with Unicorns continued over several hundred years, two standardised breeds were established.
The Miniature Unicorn, in addition to its stature, became desirable due to its docile and agreeable temperament, and became a fixture in courts containing young children, or served as companion animals to jesters or court dwarfs in entertaining monarchs. Many veterinary experts have argued that the "docile" demeanour of miniature Unicorns is due to multiple hereditary health conditions, including arthritis, angular limb deformities, patellar luxation and dystocia. This has been heavily disavowed by notable breeders; in spite of this, no medical history records of the Miniature Unicorn have ever been made publicly available.
2c - "Gaëlle", a Standard Domesticated Unicorn
Over several hundred years, secondary qualities that were "essential" to breed standard were established and bred into the second standardised breed of Unicorn, the Standard Unicorn. These qualities included a straight, thin horn, a long tail, and qualities generally associated with Equines, including a larger size, longer legs, and a "saddle" back that allowed Unicorns to be ridden or used to play Polo. Ownership is highly exclusive - it has been noted that Standard Unicorns have been sold illegally on the exotic pet trade, with animals being confiscated in locations including Belarus and Nebraska. Whilst there are no recorded total number of Standard Unicorn, it is estimated the number of them doubles the populations of North American and Eurasian Unicorns.
One of the most famous historic Standard Unicorns was Gaëlle, owned by King Louis XVI in his Versaille Menagerie. Admired for her beauty and subject to dozens of paintings, the animal herself was considered controversial due to her aggressive temperament and history of causing physical injury to humans numbering in the dozens, and was never visited by Louis XVI himself. The animal was retired to stable-only residence after an incident where she fatally gored a visiting noble. During the French Revolution, many animals of the declining menagerie were sold or eaten - the fate of Gaëlle, if recorded, is unknown.

I want to write a book called “your character dies in the woods” that details all the pitfalls and dangers of being out on the road & in the wild for people without outdoors/wilderness experience bc I cannot keep reading narratives brush over life threatening conditions like nothing is happening.
I just read a book by one of my favorite authors whose plots are essentially airtight, but the MC was walking on a country road on a cold winter night and she was knocked down and fell into a drainage ditch covered in ice, broke through and got covered in icy mud and water.
Then she had a “miserable” 3 more miles to walk to the inn.
Babes she would not MAKE it to that inn.
Are there any other particularly egregious examples?
This book already exists, sort of! Or at least, it’s a biology textbook but I bought it for writing purposes:
It starts with a chapter about freezing to death, and it is without a doubt the scariest thing I’ve read in years (and I read a lot of horror fiction).
The person who added this link has deactivated and the next person in the chain after them was NG and I will not put anymore of his posts on anyone's dash, so here's the link where this book can be downloaded.

Not gonna lie this makes me a bit irritated. Here's the real version of this photo:
Instead of a cutesie reference to film censorship it was an explicit statement of defiance of Maryland's criminalization gay sex, which was not repealed until 2002. This wasn't a guy saying "Oh they can't put what I do in the movies according to a completely voluntary industry code" he was saying "The State of Maryland wants to put me in jail for being gay and having gay sex."
It wasn't a guy being cheeky about sex in an ambiguous, cute way. It was a man stating, in no uncertain terms, that a whole state of the United States considered him a criminal for being homosexual.
we don't credit rebecca sugar enough for making the episode with the first gay wedding in a kids show extremely plot relevant so it could not be skipped or cut.
#rebecca sugar has gone on record saying that they knew from the beginning they wanted ruby and sapphire and they put every inch of planning#in to make sure that the studio could not take them out. sugar has said they’d compromised on hundreds of things they’d wanted for steven#so that they had the bargaining power specifically to keep ruby and sapphire’s relationship#and a number of ‘filler’ episodes were created just to establish counter-arguments that might come up when they pitched the wedding episode#the one that comes to mind is the episode about steven and connie getting lost in rose’s room steven’s central conflict about liking their#fave book series’ romantic ending was later weaponised when producer’s were like ‘oh but steven’s a boy he won’t be too interested in them#getting married’ sugar was able to be like ‘no. in this episode it’s established he loves romance and specifically weddings. and in these#episodes it’s shown how much steven cares about ruby and sapphire and their relationship and happiness. you cannot convince me this is not#good and necessary plot development#and they wrapped it up in the season finale and the big climactic point of the diamonds finally coming to attack earth to make the#episode integral to the series no skipping it without confusion. and had ruby wear a wedding dress because international censors took#advantage of her design to give her a masculine va#and sugar made certain that everybody knew This was a queer love story that an entire town supported and admired and that any child watchin#it at home would know they are not alone and that that support is waiting for them out there somewhere#sugar sacrificed the wider story they wanted to tell for that and it was a horrible decision to be given but they made the right choice
Tbh germ theory DOES sound crazy. Like if you told a regency-era nobleman that tiny creatures lived on the surface of everything and THAT’S what causes consumption, they’d be like “ah, I see you are a lunatic. Would you reside in my hermitage? Rantings and ravings do so amuse my guests”
But if you told a Medieval person this they would probably go "Ah, so when the miasma settles on surfaces it gains evil life. I understand."
Yeah, actually, it would probably be pretty easy to explain germ theory to a Medieval person as tiny evil spirits that live on everything, but they can be purified by soap and water, or by alcohol, because that is why God has granted us those things. And because they can float in the air, if you cough or sneeze after they have infested you, that can cause them to infest others. And when you are sick, the angels God has deputized to defend the bodies of His beloved children are at war with the evil spirits, and, sadly, sometimes they lose, but the best way to help your angels win their battle is to rest, drink plenty (this would probably be small beer in this time period, not water, because the water was also infested), stay clean, and for the sake of God do not allow anyone to let your blood, for the angels need that blood in their war against the evil spirits. Bloodletting is good for some types of illnesses but not the kinds caused by the tiny evil spirits.
boiling as a sterilization measure is also easy to explain. water returns to the air when heated and it rises as steam back up to the floodgates of heaven; we know God created the world in seven days, He's not up there making more water every time it rains. it circulates. the returning of water to heaven also purifies the water of unclean and malign influences. you know wormy water from a muddy puddle will kill your kid. you know you wouldn't wade into a bog and have a slurp. water that remains in the low places of earth absorbs all that is unclean from our waste and it may also sponge up new diseases from hell, we're not totally sure about that one, but it seems likely. God set up the heavenly water cycle so that the earth's waters wouldn't totally fill up with gunk.
what does this have to do with boiling your surgical tools? well look, the boiling water releases bubbles of steam which carries the malign influences up to heaven. you boil a knife, you send all the miasmic particles off with the steam to heaven. if you rinse the knife off in a bucket the water isn't hot enough, the particles go into the water and then right back on to the knife. you gotta boil it to get the particles all the way away. how can a tool or rag or a bed have miasmic particles on it when you can't smell them? humans have a lousy sense of smell. look at your dog on the hunt. are there no rabbits in the woods just because you can't smell them? we know that miasma is carried on the air, and is what makes stench so dangerous, and we know that humans can't smell worth a damn compared to dogs cats horses etc. a dog can smell if a rat died in a corner of the room last week. you can't. do you think licking the spot where the rat died is going to go well for you? luckily, what humans lack in snout we make up for in brains. we have extra brains where our sniffers should have been. God set that up for a reason.
and why does a rinse with wine spirits work? man, look how fast alcohol evaporates. my guess is that because wine contains a lot more vice than water, it evaporates a whole lot faster, in sort of an equal and opposite way that a rock falls faster than a feather. if you want the miasmic particles to get off there FAST, you dunk it in something that's going back to heaven at a gallop.
what's up with honey? it just preserves things against corruption. doesn't clean them off. honey doesn't evaporate at all. probably because bees don't sin. it's not good for ridding a tool of particles-- it's sticky-- but fine for preserving anything you don't want to go to heaven OR hell. this is why you wash the wound with wine spirits or purified water FIRST, to sluice the miasma out, then slap the honey on AFTER. and boil the damn bandage, too. you wouldn't put a rotten door in a sound doorframe and expect it to keep out bandits, would you? cmon.
#I have a running list in my head of useful knowledge for if I ever get timeslipped and this is one of those things

i'm getting the sense some of you are not actually forklift certified.
well damn . egg on my face
THE PLOT THICKENS @averagejoey2000 explain yourself
I can't believe this is how I'm finding out that I got a scam forklift cert.
I took the cargo ops class at school but my teacher explained that it doesn't give a certification and I'd only be okay for ship's crane and the school forklifts. she said I could take an online exam and get my cert. I paid 60 bucks.
I'm googling and I'm seeing a lot of resources saying that the online programs cover the classroom part of the exam but not the in person practical aspect.
29 CFR 1910.178 (l)(2)(ii)
but I did the in person practical shit at school.
the back of the card even had fancy numbers on it. I couldn't have known that this isn't the one. this website sounded more official than certifyme.net, and there wasn't one with a .gov address.
so, I emailed OSHA, and they said that so long as I live and work in California, there's no such thing as forklift certification. I have to be told how to do it every time I get the job.
Update: I took a certification class in shipboard Material Handling Equipment at my federal job. *now* I'm forklift certified, but only on ships and piers and only for this company, but also rated to forklift explosives and hazardous materials. Also I'm a woman now.
