Excellent Dan & Hank interactions today
we fucking knew it. vindication. also phil babe what happened to the flash drive...
Positive thought this 4th: the 4th celebrates the very beginning of a fight for freedom with the statement in the Declaration of what is worth fighting for. It's not a celebration of a particular government or outcome necessarily. And in that sense, it's always hopeful because every year we can commit again to that beginning and those ideals. And those ideals were and remain truly radical, so of course they are contested, of course it's an ongoing fight. The evidence of how important it is to assert that everyone is equal and has inalienable rights--and the horror of allowing the alternate pov to rule-- is everywhere before our eyes.
*Of course* the fight continues. It's for something that can never fully be won--not as long as the human heart is imperfect, prone to error and cruelty--but it's also something that can never fully be lost as long as people want more than what Langston Hughes called "the same old stupid plan / Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak."
Every year, we can remember everyone who chose to believe that equality is possible, that the "same old stupid plan" must be fought with all we have, and dedicate ourselves to living that every day, to carrying our quiet part in the battle to create what Lincoln called a "new birth of freedom."
All the values worth fighting for can never truly and permanently be won. But any value worth fighting for can never truly be lost either. It is beyond the limits of power, it lives in the mystery of the human heart. Its power haunts and terrorizes tyrants because they know it is a spark that can never truly be quenched.
Baby Horseshoe Crabs: these eggs contain tiny horseshoe crab embryos, and the hatchlings typically emerge after 2-4 weeks, but it takes another 10 years for them to reach adulthood
These photos show the embryonic form of Limulus polyphemus, commonly known as the Atlantic horseshoe crab. The eggs of this species are initially opaque, with a grayish-blue, green, or pink coloration, but they become increasingly translucent as the embryos mature, providing a glimpse of the tiny horseshoe crabs developing within.
Above: several embryos twirling around in their eggs
The legs become visible roughly five days after fertilization, and the embryos begin to move shortly thereafter, eventually flexing their legs and twirling their bodies. They molt for the very first time just a few days later. Each embryo will shed its skin and grow a new one four times in total before it even hatches from the egg.
Above: Limulus polyphemus embryos
The hatchlings finally emerge after 2-4 weeks. The freshly-hatched larvae measure less than 1cm long, and they look just like miniature versions of their adult form, except that they do not yet have tails (which are actually known as telsons) and their exoskeletons are still soft and translucent. These young horseshoe crabs are often described as "trilobite larvae."
Above: a young horseshoe crab discarding its egg
Atlantic horseshoe crabs generally spawn in May and June, with hundreds of thousands of individuals gathering along the coast on the night of the full moon and new moon. Each female lays up to 100,000 eggs per season, but very few of those offspring actually survive to adulthood. Most of the eggs are eaten or destroyed before they can even hatch, and many of the remaining larvae perish at some point during the 10 years that it takes for them to reach full maturity (i.e. the age at which they begin to reproduce).
Above: the freshly-hatched larvae
Wild horseshoe crabs can live to be more than 20 years old, and they can measure up to 60 centimeters (2 feet) long. They have 10 eyes in total, including two compound eyes that are specifically adapted for the purpose of finding a mate:
The most obvious eyes are the two lateral compound eyes. These are used for finding mates during the spawning season. Each compound eye has about 1,000 receptors or ommatidia. The cones and rods of the lateral eyes have a similar structure to those found in human eyes, but are around 100 times larger in size. At night, the lateral eyes are chemically stimulated to greatly increase the sensitivity of each receptor to light. This allows the horseshoe crab to identify other horseshoe crabs in the darkness.
Above: a close-up of a horseshoe crab's compound eye, which is covered in tiny hatchlings for some reason
Horseshoe crabs have been around for at least 445 million years, which means that these creatures are about 200 million years older than the dinosaurs and at least 50 million years older than trees, and yet their morphology has changed very little in that time. In fact, modern horseshoe crabs are frequently described as "living fossils," because they still look strikingly similar to their fossilized ancestors.
Above: the juvenile form of Tachypleus tridentatus, commonly known as the Chinese horseshoe crab
It's important to note that horseshoe crabs are not true crabs. In fact, they're not even crustaceans -- they belong to a completely different group of arthropods known as chelicerates, and they are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than they are to crabs.

She's being so big and brave.
Iâve got three of my own at home!
happy disability pride month to people who were/are abused because of their disability. my ex abused the fuck out of me specifically because i was too disabled to contribute to our lives the way they wanted. their abuse might even be part of why im so disabled in the first place (got shingles which can kick start chronic illnesses and was triggered by the stress i was under......because of the abuse).
i know so many people who were/are at the mercy of very terrible people because they literally have no other options. it's harrowing especially since ive been there.
if you're in this situation i hope so so dearly that you can get out as soon as possible. you deserve to be taken care of without having to fear the people who help you.
happy july 4th it is peaches day
happy peaches day to all that celebrate

Having experienced a lot of it in my 20s, I think some of the worst, pettiest, most straight up this-is-just-bullying-you're-passing-off-as-praxis incidences of Queer Infighting endemic to young people can be best understood as attempts to exercise power by people with very little power.
Like you're 22, you're queer, you've just become a Marxist, the scope of World Suck is overwhelming and you have $30 in your bank account. What can you do to feel like you have any power? Well, you can try to get your frenemy cancelled for cosplaying a character from a problematic show. You can write a public callout post over someone's obviously friendly use of a slur you don't think they technically have the right to reclaim. Doing this stuff can make you feel like you have power and your actions have an impact. Unfortunately the impact in question is a negative impact on other marginalized people. But that often takes some maturity and self-reflection to notice.
I'm reminded of this post from 2017. To paraphrase, OP took part in community service via their university and part of that was cleaning the bathrooms at the local homeless community centre, which would frequently get trashed, not because the homeless people using them disrespected the work of the people cleaning them but because they had so little control over other things that happened in their lives, and the bathroom was something they could affect.
This, too, is a trashed bathroom; young queer people living through hell and having precious little control over their circumstances or the world in which they exist can affect something by using the language of social justice as a cudgel on their would-be allies, as well as getting a brief feeling of power over someone else by doing it.
It's not worth it. Don't trash your community bathrooms.

This kind of attitude pisses me off btw. Actually when it comes to politics, we should be thinking about stuff seriously basically all of the time. It's not about being virtuous or morally superior or whatever, it's just important to care about what you are saying. I don't care that lots of dog people say there are "gender" differences in dogs â lots of people say lots of bullshit and if it's wrong and harmful it should be addressed.
Hey sorry no you can't think about "dog genders" without thinking about human gender because gender is a social construct that doesn't apply to dogs so you've already failed! Fuck off with your dismissive "looool".
"gender is a social construct that doesn't apply to dogs" FUCKING SERIOUSLYYYYY âźď¸âźď¸âźď¸ and if you're paying even a MODICUM of attention to how people interact with your dogs you cannot help but be aware of how gender poisons all of our interactions. but yeah no girl idk looool đ
This June, I need Gen Z queers to understand that some people are closeted.
I am saying this as a Gen Z queer, before yâall get your guns out to fucking shoot me.
But I need yâall to understand that if someone doesnât give you their government name in a queer space, itâs not because theyâre âmysterious,â and you do not have permission to take it upon yourself to figure out their âreal identityâ and go digging for them online like a private investigator. First, thatâs creepy and a violation of privacy and reasonable boundaries. Second, some of us keep our private and professional lives very separate because we need to keep food on the fucking table and a roof over our heads, and our private life could jeopardize that.
âWhy wonât you tell me about your parents?â âWhy canât I know your real name?â âWhere do you work?â
1.) Not all our parents would bake us a fucking cake when we come out. Some of us are closeted. Surely you understand this? You also do not need to know my parentâs names or occupations; we are both adults. I do not need nor want to mix you and my private life with my parents and my public life.
2.) Trans people do not owe you their dead name or government name
3.) Iâm not telling you for the sake of job security. I am a government fucking caseworker working amidst a fucking lavender panic!
âThereâs no way youâre a different person outside this; youâre still you at your core. What harm is thereââ
No, I am a completely different person. A different person with a different personality and different interests and a different name and presentation. I am a completely different person because I keep this life and my public life private to avoid fracturing 90% of my interpersonal relationships and 100% of my professional ones.
âYouâre not out? But youâre so confident.â
Seeâ thatâs part of the issue. Yâall assume someone is in the closet because they hate themselves or lack self-identity. Some of us know exactly who we are, but need to prioritize financial stability or else our entire life gets exponentially harder immediately.
You meet queer people over the age of 40 and one of the first/earliest questions is âwho knows?â
I need yâall to start bringing that energy. Because itâs not always safe for someone to be out and not everyone is safe to be out around.
There is a misnomer that âthe closetâ inherently means âdoesnât know theyâre queerâ and not âisnât out widely and publicly.â âOutnessâ is often a patchwork.
