thinking about it, it doesn’t make total sense that THIS is the character we chose to make a poc. as i said in the tags, he lived in a bubble of nepotism and privilege, and he was deliberately made to be a morally grey character, in a similar way to snape!! a lot of the behaviour we see james exhibit is recognisable in those with white privilege, and imagining that a poc, whatever race you hc james to be, would have the structural power within 1980s britain to be popular or well-liked, let alone a bully, is absurd. to push the traits of a being in a racial minority upon james would naturally detract from his canon personality, and to push his canon personality would leave us unable to adequately portray the poc experience. i am all for racial diversity in this fandom, and i don’t at all think there’s enough of it, but simply taking a character with (white) lived experiences and declaring that they will be the representation is simply not enough. to effectively push diversity and representation, it is so much more meaningful to create new characters, or take those who’s life we know little about, and create their lived experiences in line the whole time with being a poc. even snape would be a much more interesting character to explore this with, but i struggle with it being the ultra-privileged, wealthy, popular, spoilt, arrogant character.

and if i said that james being white was important to his character because the reason he acts like that in canon is due to his white supremacy
