get to know me meme: {1/5 relationships} → Arwen and Aragorn.
guys I can't get over how the movies nerfed Gimli for a bit of comedic relief and somehow also nerfed Legolas by not letting him be the comedic relief
in the books, Gimli is an incredible, poetic, charming, heroic, axe wielding sexy man!!
and Legolas is a skilled but funny, cheeky, whimsical, singing prince of Mirkwood!!
this is really apparent in the battle of Helm's Deep
in the books, Eomer is already with them and has dramatically charged out into battle with Aragorn when he's overwhelmed by orcs. Gimli heroically launches himself into danger and beheads several, saving Eomer from death, then he wonders back up to his position on the wall and greets Legolas with the news of his kills. Legolas is the first to mention their competition and tease Gimli with his higher score
later, Gimli and Eomer are separated from Aragorn, the situation is clearly grave and he rejoins Legolas and informs him of where he last saw Gimli. Legolas frets but ultimately breaks the tension by saying he wished to see Gimli so he could boast of his even higher kill count
just ugahhsjh I can't explain my thought very well
absolute cowards, I say
just let Gimli be the smart, sexy, warrior and let Legolas be the sweet, dramatic, poet
I think book Gimli is all those things and in addition to being an unintentionally hilarious nepo baby as well. He verbally spars with big deal elf Elrond about oaths and doesn’t give 2 shits! He immediately calls Eomer stupid threatens to murder him while surrounded by one million spears! He loses it when they finally find Merry and Pippin and wants to beat them up a lil even though he’s so stoked! HE DROPS HIS AXE IN FRONT OF TREEBEARD AFTER LEGOLAS ASSURES HIM ITS ONLY USED FOR ORC KILLING!!!
And Legolas, everyone’s favorite lightly feral backwoods weirdo who is terrifyingly competent and talks to trees and rocks and rivers and invents songs on the fly and makes dumb jokes while his traveling companions are pretty much actively dying in the snow!
Genuinely my favorite characters!

I see so many arguments over what is and isn't "good queer representation" that really just boil down to "y'all are actually arguing over matters of taste and genre preference, which is incredibly subjective and personal."
Worldbuilding where being queer is normalized and queerphobia has no impact on the plot? THAT'S FINE. Worldbuilding that includes queerphobia and tackles the effects of it as part of the story? THAT'S ALSO FINE.
Low-stakes queer romcom where the characters are fluffy and cute? THAT'S COOL. Messy queer drama with toxic people who fuck each other over and clash repeatedly? THAT'S ALSO COOL.
Stories that center the characters' queerness, show a trans character's transition, and are about the queerness as much as the rest of the plot? AWESOME. Stories where the characters' queerness isn't treated as a big deal, and have trans characters whose transition happened before the story entirely? ALSO AWESOME.
You may PREFER one thing or another, but it is actually good to have all these things. It's about variety. It's about queer characters being allowed to exist without censorship. It's about queer artists getting to make things without being told we're a "niche issue" or "adult content." It's about having as many goddamn cakes as the bakery can produce.
At the end of the day, I'd prefer a media landscape with fifty pieces of problematic queer representation over a media landscape with one single piece of queer representation that's trying (and usually failing) to be 100% perfect for everything and everyone.

I can’t recall the taste of food… nor the sound of water… nor the touch of grass. I’m naked in the dark, with nothing, no veil between me and the wheel of fire!

An archivist found a long forgotten 8mm film reel in an old metal box, marked “Philippines 1942”. Thinking it was lost WWII footage, he sent it in to be restored/digitized. When he got the footage back, he found puppies instead (via)
This is so freaking profound. Like, this was before the advent of the personal camera. Not just anyone owned a camera in these days. Cameras were expensive, and so was the film. When you were recording shit, it had to be stuff you were willing to shell out a pretty penny to have preserved. Someone so deeply and profoundly loved these dogs and found joy in them that they decided to preserve them for future generations to see, after these pups are long dead and gone. This camera operator wanted to preserve the joy these dogs brought them and to share it with others. How incredible is that?

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (2002) dir. Peter Jackson
Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something. What are we holding onto, Sam? That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo… and it’s worth fighting for.
