So another fun thing I've been doing is recreating as many canon book pages as I can and trying to sort of reverse engineer a copy of Merlin's spellbook as a coloring book - or maybe I'll make color versions in the future, who knows - using plenty of creative license and also incorporating original designs where canon ones weren't available.
However, Merlin and Gaius consulted a lot of different books over the course of the show, so my headcanon is that Merlin had a habit of ripping out pages and stuffing them all together into his own spellbook - which of course made Gaius and Geoffrey extremely pissy. :D
So in honor of today's prompt from @merlinktober, these are the pages I've made for the Manticore entries, inspired by the screenshots below.
Many of the pages had just random lorem ipsum copy or repeated phrases for the actual text, so I've also used the info on the Merlin Wiki to help me fill in text gaps.

i love gwen to death but honestly... respectfully... girl what the fuck. you had one gorgeous olive-skinned man telling insane things to you such as "live for me or everything i am has been for nothing" and you went for the loser who faked cooking chicken on your first date. what was the thought process here my dearest
the main problem is the show didn't let Gwen decide. Lancelot decided for her that she would be with Arthur, she didn't get a say.
at the end, it's pretty clear she only chose Arthur because Lancelot left. the show made him leave because Gwen and Arthur were supposed to be endgame, and then they were like oh shit we can't have Lancelot be a regular because then Gwen doesn't have any reason to choose Arthur.
another reason he couldn't stay is that he would have been a true friend to merlin, therefore not keeping him isolated with (almost) no one knowing about his magic. also his staying would have made keeping the magic secret from Arthur even more illogical, or alternatively lancelot would have become Merlin's best friend.
the writers really wrote themselves into a corner there by making all the worst decisions early on lmao.
but yeah Gwen's choice was robbed of her (probably so she remains "pure" morally, if she actively chooses one over the other she hurts the other's feelings, and Gwen couldn't possibly be a complex character who makes decisions that might hurt people, women can either be a villain or a love interest and there is absolutely no in between) so I really don't blame her as a character for "choosing" Arthur after the guy who declared all the romantic feelings for her just up and left out of nowhere.

merlin is genuinely SOOOOOOOOO funny like morgana was clearly the baddest bitch in the house. constantly riding around on wolf caravans and concocting elaborate schemes to overthrow arthur's canonically fascistic regime in which children were burned and drowned for using magic. and she was unironically meant to be perceived as a loser and villain. fantasy as a genre is so misogynistic that it kind of becomes funny sometimes
