RYAN GOSLING as RYLAND GRACE

Both elements that could be termed antagonistic, Eva Stratt and the astrophage, are shown at their most beautiful and emotionally affecting back to back, in the sequence going from "Sign of the Times" to "A Moment".

Eva sings and connects the sadness of their situation and the sacrifice of the astronauts to an element of hope and perseverance. Ryland is transfixed, happy, comforted.

The Petrova line at Adrian is so devastatingly beautiful to behold that Ryland spins to bask in it. The music swells as if in celebration. He is moved to have Rocky name the planet for love and devotion.

Both of these elements are beautiful. Their nature or position contains properties that make them dangerous. Eva will force Ryland on the mission. Astrophage is literally killing the Earth and and the fuel leak will almost kill Rocky and Grace.

But nevertheless, the movie insists, they are beautiful.

Astrophage provides the fuel that powers them. Eva's choice saves two planets down the line.

The ability and need to understand what he's dealing with really does allow him to see the duality, beauty and mystery in what others might see and dangerous and threatening. He lives up to his name, he gives them grace.

Through his eyes, after his talk with her on the deck, we see Eva Stratt as a human who has an incredible burden on her shoulders and as she looks around at him, at the room of people who have given their lives to The Project, it might even be her asking for some understanding, some bit of forgiveness for what she's done and will do. "It's a sign of the times."

The Petrova Line above Adrian is a scene that always, always sends shivers down my spine. Through his eyes we're seeing these tiny little microscopic creatures that he's dedicated the last few years of his professional life and had become an expert in, and they're all around him, just quietly existing in their natural environment. Seeing them for what they are. I can even imagine then he's realizing how limited his understanding of Astrophage truly is.

And they are, they're beautiful.

What I like is that Weir is telling us a story about solving problems, about communication and understanding each other despite limitations and differences, and how people have to work together. Working alone or in opposition of everything and everyone might mean the solution never presents itself.

There needs to be balance, harmony, where even discordant notes can resolve into music.

The Eridian goodbye is not only the motion up and down the arm, it's the sound as well. So when Grace tries to mimic Rocky's goodbye, he can't make that sound, so he never fully "said" goodbye.

Grace: He can see through walls.

I can't remember the last time I watched a movie that made me actually feel so much lighter and happier at the end. I walked out of that theater each time with so much joy.

I mean, just... THIS.

Actually, it's a broken heart. It's friendship. It's pain. It's joy.

Grace: Hey, that isn’t true or very ni—

Rocky: Have button. Not do anything.

Grace: Oh, because you expect me to press it and just— *presses button* —oh that does make a nice sound actually.
