disclaimer - i am disabled + live with mental illness. my adolescence has been largely shaped by that. i sometimes post about that, as well as my time in inpatient treatment. i also just love complaining. i don't really post anything triggering ever, though. if you need anything tagged, please let me know! i am happy to.
finally - absolutely feel free to send asks, dms, and tag me in tag games! just know that i am supremely shitty at responding. i try my best, but social interaction is exhausting for me sometimes, even if i'm interacting with people i like. it is NOT personal if i don't reply right away!

So I shall elaborate. Mind you, I am just transcribing my sticky notes verbatim. Just because word counts and such interest me all of my in-post additions will be in a fun color.
@colortheparacosmist tagging you too since you also requested these
Okay I actually have a lot of thoughts abt his name (I can never be normal abt names again after reading the Silm, sue me). So:
Grace introduces himself to Rocky as Grace.Ā
His kids call him Mr. Grace.Ā
He asks others, friends, to call him Ryland, but they donāt (DuBois).Ā
We donāt ever see Marissa call him by any name. Letās go over these things.Ā
Grace refers to himself once internally as Ryland. Once. Internally. (Correction as I am editing: I think itās twice. But the other time, if Iām remembering correctly, is similarly āshut the fuck up Rylandā vibes). Perhaps he doesnāt have that strong of a connection to this name/doesnāt care about it. Until heās got to be verbally mean to himself. This is just how he thinks of himself internally which is. Telling, given what life events it seems connected to and how casualness correlates to devaluation to him. Perhaps he doesnāt care about this name very much because itās been out of use for a long time (thanks, academia). Perhaps it being out of use has something to do with his self-perception, as in he rarely ever thinks of himself as Ryland anymore. Cool. Cool. Heās normal and definitely hasnāt tied his sense of self so deeply to his academic career that itās going to destroy him. Okay. It could also just be a meta decision from Weir for this moment, where Grace is beginning (albeit unknowingly) to farm Astrophage. āRylandā = rye land, aka farmland/farmer. Very subtle. More generally, growing/maintaining life connects to his saving Earth & Erid.Ā
By the time Grace meets Rocky, his most important name to him is not Ryland. He introduces himself as Grace. Probably some of this is because of the pride he allows himself to have in his PhD. After all, he does get smug about the Dr. title after remembering his name. But. I think itās worth remembering āGraceā is a thematically chosen name. Graceās primary character traits are mercy and patience, even for those he doesnāt know well. So, yeah, maybe heās trying to establish some distance/respect between himself & Rocky, BUT he intros himself as āGrace,ā not Dr. Grace. Heās half-in, half-out of who was in higher education/academia. Heās likely been called Dr. Grace for years by peers & colleagues & poured years (most of, PhD programs are long & require a lot of lead-up work) of his life into being in academia. Itās one of the most core parts of his identity yet was ripped out from under him after the Paperā¢. Heās still attached to it, clearly, but also recognizes heās not quite who he was, & that thereās been an irrevocable shift in his life. And that shift was probably painful & traumatic, but he canāt fully accept it or figure out a clear way to move forward. Yeah, maybe the kids donāt call him Dr. because itās a middle schoolābut I had high school teachers who went by Dr. Not that weird. Maybe heās just the cool teacher, but then I think heād go by Mr. Ryland. I think Mr. Grace is a signifier of liminality and Graceās inability to accept he can shape a life & identity that is new. That he can change. I think maybe he just identifies more w/the name Grace. Fun for many reasons but to address 2:
Gender fuckery (āGraceā typically feminine)
Self-esteem fuckery & once again acknowledging, though only subconsciously, his best qualities. That he is kind, patient, & merciful, even with strangers. And that he can be loved.
Others still see Grace as Dr. Grace, as an academic leading the field of xenobiology, thought Grace seems to not want them to. Perhaps heās really internalized that Paperās fallout. Which is interesting, because you donāt pull crazy theories in academia (or theories @ all), without being willing to stick to your guns (i.e. be a bit of a bitch about your beliefs). Itās interesting how much that fall from Grace(* weāll get to that pun too) affected him & again how he seems incapable of moving forward & processing that 2 identities can be true at the same time. Yeah, maybe heās just trying to be friendly with colleagues (and maybe heās being oblivious about how much they revere him & that heās Strattās SIC), butā¦I think his sense of discomfort around others not using his first name is interesting. It betrays his self-impressions.Ā
Marissa doesnāt call him by any name. Why? (Probably just a quirk of the writing, but indulge me) Is it because Grace is too uncomfortable acknowledging othersā perceptions of him to bring it up in the memory? Because what if how others see him is different from how he sees himself, and it forces him to confront his pain?
This is one of the earliest memories he recovers, so by the time heās readily remembering more of how others refer to and perceive him later on, heās had more time to work through/settle with that. As opposed to a freshly reborn gut instinct not to fucking look at what others think of him. Okayyy.
A final thought: he calls himself Ryland in a moment where heās pissed @ himself & believes heās acting stupidly. And the way he does it sounds an awful lot like heās parroting how others have spoken to him before. God. Heās really uncomfortable with taking pride in himself, yet contradictorily acknowledges he is Grace, mercy, teacher, friend to aliens, lover of Earth and humanity, and worthy of life and wellness.
*A note on the phrase āfall from Grace:ā
Grace goes back to (or tries to, with his peers) using Ryland, or at least leaving off his Dr. title. He is literally stripping himself of the name Grace after an academic fall from grace, in an attempt to strip himself of externally recognizable worth and value. Possibly (probably) because he does not believe he is valuable. He has really internalized the Paper fallout and takes until being forced back into a higher position to accept othersā recognition of such. Also, he is really attached to his academic identity and totally unmoored without it.

Well. My annotations are going crazy. I will transcribe some of my bajillion sticky notes for you all here:
Part of what makes Graceās view of himself so agonizing is Strattās completely contrasting view of him. This is also part of what makes her betrayal of him so heartbreaking.
Stratt, from the beginning, sees within Grace what he cannot. She sees that he is intelligent, capable, likeable, and valuable as a human being. She believes in his ability to be a stubborn bitch and stand by what he believes in. She understands that he is more than just his academic career (though that is what primarily makes him valuable to the Petrova Taskforce): he is an academic who can defend his ācrazyā theories and who is, as such, deeply interested in āuntouchableā questions and explanations for things. She sees and respects the hell out of his curiosity, and she recognizes he is able to share this with others as a teacher. She has him teach DuBois and Shapiro and herself and trusts him intrinsically to do an excellent job of this.
Grace only consciously recognizes some of these qualities in himself and has trouble recognizing and accepting the others. He seems incredibly cowed after his failed academic paper and excommunication from higher education. He wonāt stand by things, so Stratt pushes him to.
He yells at her to give him more Astrophage to study, because itās something he believes he can make meaningful, valuable progress on. He yells, because of her. He, Grace, whose name itself means patience, loses his patience and yells, because of Stratt.
And Stratt is constantly pushing him to recognize and be proud of his best qualities! She makes him her SIC (though he doesnāt realize this) and gives him top secret clearance without any hesitation. She acknowledges him as the leading expert in Astrophage breeding and biology and states this, when he does not. She expresses faith in his ability to teach people who have two or three times the academic recognition as himself, when he cannot see why he would be a valuable teacher to them. She believes in him, as a person, when he cannot.
And then, when he finally reaches the goal of self-recognition and self-confidence that Stratt has pushed him towards all this timeāwhen he is finally brave enough to tell her, the dictator of the world, no, he will not and does not want to dieā¦She has to tell him she cannot respect that. When in every other way she has been able to respect him, even if itās only enough to tell him point blank he has no say in a matter, instead of giving him the illusion of choice.Ā
I believe Strattās asking Grace to go on the Hail Mary was her one selfish decision. She wanted her friendship with him to end as a friendship, and not a betrayal. She wanted him to believe that it was his decision, all the time. She wanted him to also believe in his own bravery and capability and to choose to use that to, in more ways than he already had, save humanity. She wanted him to see those qualities in himself that she had been seeing for months. She wanted that last interaction with him to be one where she could celebrate with him his own acceptance of self-worth and acknowledge how valuable and loved he is to the people around himāand for him to, in believing being on the Mary is his choice alone, be able to connect this sense of value to more than just his role as a sacrificial lamb.Ā
But that last interaction was not such. It was a tragedy for both of them.
I ran an Aliens rpg years back. But the players didn't KNOW it was an Aliens game until halfway through the first session.
They thought it was a sci-fi game but they also thought the monsters were going to be zombies.
Over a period of 2 hours they then proceeded to make EVERY Aliens movie cliche "mistake" known to man. Because at the time they all made sense.
The characters in a story don't know they're in a story or what kind of story it is.
They might think their in a romcom instead of a slasher movie. And if you're not in a slasher movie, why the fuck would you search through every closet in your house just because a cup mysteriously fell off a table in the dining room?
