I love that OFMD isn't grounded in historical accuracy (or even entirely grounded in reality) and is more magical realism lite with casual anachronism. Oluwande wears crocs. Physical injuries are only as serious as they need to be. Stede gets stabbed and hanged and ends up in bed hallucinating with a fever but then he's completely fine. Getting stabbed is either treated as a slightly serious injury or a stand-in for intimacy/penetration. Lucius survives getting locked in a trunk for an extended period of time and being pushed off the ship. Ed wears a knee brace and dresses like a character from Mad Max. The Queen Anne crew all dress like leather daddies. Buttons the sea witch turns into a seagull. Ed comes back from the dead and heals from a brain injury in less than a day. Jim is outed as trans fairly early in the show and everybody aboard The Revenge and Jim's nana adjust to their new presentation and pronouns after a brief confused conversation. The only reason anyone on The Revenge is initially wary of Jim potentially being a woman is because they think women have crystals in their bodies that attract bad luck. Stede and the cursed suit. Prosthetics seamlessly replace lost body parts with no adjustment period. Two characters with no medical training perform amputation for the first time and somehow the guy survives. Everyone fast travels to whatever place they need to go without a map or a compass. A bisexual woman sets her antique shop on fire as a declaration of love and reconciliation to her butch wife.
Like. If this show was making an honest effort at historical accuracy and realism it probably wouldn't be a queer romantic comedy, but adding in all these magical and anachronistic elements detaches it from reality enough that we (the audience) can totally believe this pirate ship in the year 1717 is super progressive and immediately accepting of Jim being trans, that almost everyone aboard the ship is some flavor of queer and nobody bats an eyelid at casual gay sex/relationships, injuries that would more than likely kill someone without modern medicine are treated as so not a big deal that characters injure each other recreationally, etc.
In my heart and soul they can hug <3 🎶✨
This shot of Eva breaks my heart every time
Like… Here Eva is, watching her best friend try to escape, the blinds making her look like she’s already behind prison bars. A prisoner of her own duty to humanity.
today’s genre is: x files studies i started a long time ago but only now just finished to get out of an art slump (procreate & heavypaint)

FULL AUDIO: Live audio commentary - Iron Man (2008), by Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. (2h29m length)
There has never been a director’s commentary for the Iron Man films that included Jon Favreau and RDJ. While promoting The Jungle Book, Favreau told Reddit that they actually did do an unofficial one back in 2008 for an Iron Man screening but it was not officially recorded by the venue.
Someone in attendance did manage to record the whole thing and it was shared on Reddit yesterday, eight years later.
The screening took place on September 6, 2008 at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica, CA and was hosted by American Cinematheque as part of their “Live Commentary” series.
** NOTE: the commentary starts at approximately the 7-minute mark. **

WHAT
highlights/key takeaways include:
favreau talking nonstop about how rdj kept insisting on so many little editing tweaks that ultimately made the movie flow better
jay leno criticizing rdj for clearly not knowing what he was doing when tony clumsily takes apart a car engine [favreau’s own] (18 min mark)
tony waking up in the cave after being kidnapped was the first shot they did/rdj’s first time playing tony stark for the actual movie
rdj apologizing for this hat:
saying how that costuming choice had been his call and he didn’t knowingly mean to give such a dickensian sad boy look
when the next shot appears, favreau immediately demanding that rdj apologize for this hat:
telling how it irritated the marvel execs to no end (“we don’t show up for one day and he puts on a castro hat?!”) while rdj murmurs defensively in the background (“c'mon, that was a great hat.”)
favreau had to fight to keep in so many shots of tony working with his hands/just building things frame after frame, since he was adamant that these images were “what the whole movie was about”
the fact that tony wasn’t supposed to have his iron man mask up during the goodbye/death scene with yinsen – but they had him lift it for a single take for some technical reason that wasn’t meant to be used, then ended up using that take in the final cut (45 min mark)
rdj interrupting favreau’s explanation of the above, wanting silence for “my coming out part” (when iron man steps out of the darkness of the cave and unleashes hell)
favreau was simply indulging rdj when rdj suggested that tony make everyone sit down on the floor for the first press conference, saying that he went along with the kooky idea ‘once’ just so rdj would trust him as a director – but then ended up keeping it in bc it was so tony
rdj and favreau agreeing that the scene where pepper reaches into the arc reactor casing in tony’s chest is their ‘favorite scene’
the execs wanted to know why tony was drinking “that green shit,” which seemed to detract from the scene; favreau tells that rdj was adamant that tony would want to heal his body with superfoods
↑ “i would never not look someone in the eye when i shake their hand. but tony would.” —rdj
lots of references to indiana jones, star wars, robocop, alien
rhodey’s ringtone is the theme to the 60s iron man cartoon (same theme is used when obie introduces an absent stark at the award ceremony before the vegas scene)
the reason that tony ridicules dum-e and U so much is that these bots were used pre-production in a superbowl commercial to promote the upcoming movie, to show off what kind of ‘cool tech’ tony has around – rdj got annoyed by that, saying “these are THE DUMBEST robots anyone would ever have 🙄😑” – so when it came time to shoot his scenes with them he didn’t bother to hide how he really felt about them
↑ the photo of the iron man suit used in this newspaper shot was taken by real paparazzi, who caught up with the crew while they were shooting on a closed highway and snuck some photos; favreau thought it would be ‘cool’ to get back at them by using their shot in this scene, but then they sued marvel for $5 million for stealing their photo
putting the bonus scene at the end of the credits roll wasn’t something favreau originally wanted to do, worried that people would miss it – but it turned out that when ppl did in fact learn that they missed a scene at the end, they came back to watch the whole movie again just to catch that scene, which boosted box office revenue (this idea was suggested to him by dir. edgar wright, who happened to be at skywalker ranch during an early screening of the movie, and thought that sam jackson’s scene didn’t land right where favreau had initially included it early in the credits sequence. marvel was unhappy with this call until they saw how well it played with audiences)
time go fishing study page 1~
(still debating adding text.. this is gonna be like, 10 pages probably, so I'll post them one by one, and then a big compilation when it's all done)

REPOST : Roman stylus 70AD, in comon vanacular translates into “i went into the city and all i bought you was this lousy pen” , link and full translation in the comments [640 x 320]
Fucking screaming, shitty souvenirs haven’t changed a bit in almost 2000 years
From Planet Knowledge:
The inscription has been painstakingly examined and translated by classicist and epigrapher Dr Roger Tomlin. It reads:
‘ab urbe v[e]n[i] munus tibi gratum adf(e)ro acul[eat]um ut habe[a]s memor[ia]m nostra(m) rogo si fortuna dar[e]t quo possem largius ut longa via ceu sacculus est (v)acuus’
‘I have come from the City. I bring you a welcome gift with a sharp point that you may remember me. I ask, if fortune allowed, that I might be able (to give) as generously as the way is long (and) as my purse is empty.’ In other words: the stylus is a gift to remind the recipient of its sender; the sender acknowledges that it is a cheap gift and wishes that they could have given more. Its tongue-in-cheek sentiment is reminiscent of the kinds of novelty souvenirs we still give today. It is the Roman equivalent of ‘I went to Rome and all I got you was this pen’, providing a touching personal insight into the humour of someone who lived nearly 2000 years ago.
The Planet Knowledge link seems to be broken so here's the original post from the Museum of London Archaeology's blog:
A unique Roman stylus, with the most elaborate and expressive inscription of its kind is set to go on display for the first time.
According to Andy Weir's Eridian biology document, Eridians are better multitaskers than humans will ever be, but the trade off is they're physically incapable of locking in. SO funny to me. Yes this species can build a diorama while simultaneously blitzing through mathematics equations and also partaking in intense gossiping, but they cannot do any of those things for longer than, like, half an hour without going crazy. Species of supercomputers cursed with the TikTok attention span.
Rocky mocks Grace when he says that Rocky is distracting him by starting complex conversations while he's Trying To Do Science. "Human brain have to stop activity just because talking question? Useless! One track mind!"
Then Grace is on hour six of his "trying to recreate skittles" hyperfocus and Rocky is like What The Fuck. Statement.
Yeah human brains can only do a single very consuming task at a time but it can do it for a very long time. The one track in our one track minds spans multiple countries. Persistence predators, babey.
My personal headcanons on Rocky and Adrian's engravings.
When Rocky first introduced himself, he put his front two arms together and displayed these engravings that fit together perfectly. I remembered seeing SOMEWHERE that that was supposed to be his family crest, but I cannot for the life of me find the source of that anywhere. But anyways, here's my take on Adrian's family crest when she introduces herself
Plus, Rocky has a mission engraving on his shoulder, marking him as part of the space crew to solve the Petrova Line crisis. I once saw a headcanon from someone saying that Adrian was part of a team making biodomes for Erid when their world started getting colder as their star dimmed to help preserve towns and such, and I've been IN LOVE with that headcanon ever since I read it. Link leads to that post by hailmarysuggest.
That all said, Adrian in my design has a mission engraving as well, one of Erid and their star. Grace save stars. Adrian save Erid.
I love them a normal amount.
My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
Shoutout to people in the notes also mentioning people learning the language, I should've mentioned that really, given that I've been stuck reading German picture books myself while learning German.
