Getting real tired of these puritan antis with no emotional intelligence who are quick to shame and judge. You're no better than the people that condemn the LGBTQ+ community at this rate.
Here, have a dose of psychology.
Psychology dictates that vehemently opposing something could be a sign of reaction formation, a defense mechanism where a person outwardly expresses emotions or behaviors that are the opposite of their true, unacceptable feelings.Â
Here's why someone might do this:
Protecting Self-Esteem and Reducing Anxiety:Â Someone might find their true feelings or desires unacceptable due to societal pressures or their own internalized beliefs. Strongly opposing the very thing they desire or are attracted to can be a way of distancing themselves from those feelings and the anxiety or shame they might cause.
Managing Internal Conflict:Â People experience internal conflict or cognitive dissonance when their actions or thoughts clash with their beliefs or values. By outwardly condemning the thing they secretly desire, they might attempt to resolve that dissonance and maintain a sense of consistency.
Fear of Vulnerability:Â Expressing attraction or desire can leave people feeling vulnerable and exposed. Reaction formation allows them to avoid confronting those feelings and the potential for rejection or judgment.Â
In essence, the stronger someone's outward opposition to something, (i.e. feeling emboldened enough to shame and judge others) the more likely it is that they are using reaction formation to cope with their true feelings or desires. However, this is just one possible but the most plausible explanation as to why people might strongly oppose something.
My point here is, we pro-shippers understand that what we read and write or enjoy in topics of fiction or fantasy are just that, fiction and fantasy. Our morals aren't suddenly skewed in reality because of what we like to read about, the ship we have, or the art we like to see.
If that were the case then Brown vs. The Entertainment Merchants Association (moms against violent video games) would have won their case and we wouldn't have any violent video games, but they didn't win and people who have enjoyed playing violent video games aren't violent.
My final point is that just because we have ships we enjoy that you don't agree with doesn't negate that we are still good people with a strong moral compass and can differentiate between fiction and reality. We have healthy relationships, we work, we pay our bills, and we also enjoy other things like healthy ships and different fandoms. We are still human, we are still kind, we are still empathetic, but one thing is for sure... We don't dehumanize those that dehumanize us for something as petty as "I like vanilla and you like chocolate so you're scum"

if you told vin diesel fast and the furious you were gay he'd be like "Some people like driving stickâĻsome people like driving automaticâĻwhat matters is you cross the finish line.." and then he'd rev up a dodge challenger and drive through a building and kill 16 people
he literally did in the fourth one when he's asked if he likes cars more than women
If you asked if he was cool with trans people, he'd probably say "sometimes, aftermarket parts are the only way to get the vehicle you really want. Everyone should have the right to hot rod."
it beggars belief that someone would choose to read a book in the âhorrorâ genre, whose literal name promises that it will be full of upsetting, disgusting, frighteningâone might even say horrifyingâmaterial, and then get mad that the book contains incest or whatever. like holy shit. they are not gonna make it in the real world
*me sitting down to read a horror book* better not be anything horrifying in here
đš Someone else's fiction cannot cause you physical harm.
đšIf someone else's fiction is causing you emotional or psychological harm, or distress, you can put it down and not read/watch it.
đšYour emotional well-being is not the responsibility of fiction writers.
đšSomeone else's fiction is not about your personal trauma.
đšWhen reading or watching fiction, you always have the power. You can always stop. You are never reading fiction without your own consent.
đšFiction writers are not responsible for other people's mental health.
đšThe content of a piece of fiction does not reflect on the morality of its author.
đšJust because someone writes about bad things happening, doesn't mean they want those things to happen.
đšDon't like? Don't read.
THIS!
#also every time we learned that someone writes bad things bc they think they're good it was from learning about the things they did irl #you don't learn that just from the topics they touch on (everyone can touch on them) you learn that from other things the person does
âī¸âī¸âī¸.
It's really like:
Fic-cops: "It's ok to write about these topics, but you shouldn't romanticize them."
Others: "But how do you tell if a piece of fiction is romanticizing something or not?"
Fic-cops: "Oh, that's easy. If I personally like it, then it's not romanticizing. And if I personally don't like it, it is romanticizing."
