music journalists used to wake up and say to themselves, I think I'll ask Noel Gallagher whether he finds his brother sexually attractive
“Shut up, man.”
“I told you I was gonna say that!”
Int: What’s Liam’s performance on this record like?
Noel: The thing about Liam, which I still can’t get me head round at all, is this: I gave him the demo tapes a year ago. It was last May, right. We’d done all our bits for the album and we had two weeks off. Liam was going to sing all the vocals in two weeks. Of course, once I was out of the country he went and sat in the pub for two weeks. He won’t sing unless I’m there. And then he moans if I moan at him. [Shakes head despairingly] But no, it’s pretty good actually. It’s very good.
Int: Does he have it in him to surprise you, vocally?
Noel: Yeah. Yeah. [Smiling] He surprises me all the time. Every day.

The mood, such as it is, is neatly forecasted by an initial exchange between he Gallaghers. “Sit on me knee,” says Liam, as Noel perches on a flight case. “You’re the puppet,” comes the response. “You sit on my fucking knee.”

Hello. When do you think their relationship started? And who do you think probably were the one who initiated it? Does Lock All The Doors lyrics provides us any clue?
oh, sorry for the late reply, i somehow missed this question!
it’s actually very difficult to pinpoint, in any objective way, when gcest might have begun, or even in what form it might have existed. if anything, i think there are three main possibilities, each of which frames their dynamic in a slightly different light.
the first is that it predates the band entirely, that it started before oasis, either before noel left as a roadie with the carpets or sometime after he returned.
the second possibility is that it developed during oasis itself. that the band, the lifestyle, and the intensity of being constantly around each other – combined with drugs, fame, and a certain kind of emotional volatility – pushed them into confronting feelings they might not have fully understood before.
the third, and perhaps most ambiguous, is that it never fully manifested beyond what we’ve actually seen. that moments like the loch lomond kiss are not evidence of something larger, but rather fragments of something that remained mostly unspoken. in this reading, whatever existed between them was expressed less through a concrete relationship and more through music, tension, and a bond that constantly shifted between affection and resentment.
personally, i’m inclined to think that it all began well before oasis, at least to some extent. as you rightly pointed out, there are simply too many early songs that seem to hint at something already there, something that could be read as a forbidden dynamic, tracks like take me, written by liam, but also lock all the doors or coming on strong.
take me, in particular, carries a very explicit, almost physical meaning. it reads as an invitation, a kind of surrender at the height of youth, a moment defined by intensity, desire, and an overwhelming need to live fully.
and then there’s lock all the doors, which would later be split into two separate songs, my sister lover (oasis) and lock all the doors (high flying birds). to me, even in its earliest form, it feels like it was always about something hidden, something transgressive, whether explicitly about incest or, more broadly, about a relationship that has to remain secret.
who initiated it, or how it might have begun, is difficult to say. we also have to take into account the fact that noel and liam have a significant age difference, so the only thing i can really hope is that whatever happened unfolded without coercion or abuse, especially if it took place when liam was still young. unfortunately, it’s hard to completely separate this kind of dynamic from more disturbing implications, even in their case. but deep down, i still hope that, at least in the beginning, it was something as healthy and mutual as possible, particularly when it comes to liam.
that said, i’m not entirely convinced that noel would have been the one to initiate anything. one of the traits that consistently emerges from his songwriting is a certain inability to act in the face of love. he often presents himself as an observer, someone captivated by the object of his desire, but also deeply passive, almost paralysed when it comes to turning that feeling into something tangible (“what am i gonna do while i’m lookin’ at you? you’re standin’ ignorin’ me”, “to photograph what the eyes can’t see”, “i can’t find the words to say”, etc.). liam, on the other hand, is much more active when it comes to shaping their dynamic and pushing things further. after all, he was the one who convinced noel to join a band in the first place, not the other way around.
personally – and this is only a theory – i don’t think there was ever a clear starting point or a single initiator. i tend to see it as something that simply developed on its own. the line from take me, “was it me or was it you”, feels almost made for this kind of reading. noel may well have been the first, being older, to become aware of his own feelings and desires, but it was only when liam stepped into it – only when he made things real, pulling noel out of that state of hesitation – that anything truly began to take shape.
so there isn’t really a single “culprit”, there’s simply a feeling that, at some point, surfaced and ended up overwhelming them both, albeit in very different ways. and i think it’s precisely that difference in how they experienced it that lies at the core of both their intensity and their conflict: the same force that fuels their connection is also what gives rise to the misunderstandings that seem to echo across the decades.
again, this is just my own theory, based on how i perceive their personalities and on the accounts of their actions over the years.
ps: at some point i’d really like to do a proper analysis of take me, since i see it as an essential track for understanding their dynamic in its earliest phase.
