When Sakura kicked this dude in the face, a knife came flying out of his hand, and unlike the other guy, he wasn't aiming low for an ankle.

Here you can see him aiming for the others while their backs are turned, meaning they wouldn't have been able to react fast enough to dodge. This dude would have been able to stab them anywhere and could have tried to kill one of them. While it's possible that the other Furin guys could have noticed before he stabbed them, it's not a guarantee, since everyone was facing the opposite direction. Sakura was the only one facing that way to see him coming.

Here, we get Hiragri and Kaji barely noticing, only after Sakura took him out. I think here they realize what almost happened and what Sakura prevented, because to me, the two people it looked like he was most likely aiming for were them. This new kid, who was freaking out a second ago, and who they were unsure about where he stood, had saved them from at best a major injury or at worst saved one of their lives. I like to think that this is why they took a shine to Sakura so fast (especially Kaji, since he warmed up fast for how prickly he is), because day one, he protected not only Kotoha, but one of their most precious people.

Sakura has made room for Sugishita --who has treated his best friend as an unreachable god for years-- room to view people as human.
