Shane whines and whimpers as Ilya waits for him to calm down again and praises him for doing such a good job staying. "What a pretty puppy, such an obedient dog. So still. So good for me." But he's still not allowed to come.

And then Ilya starts up again, and the cycle repeats a few more times, Shane doing his absolute best to stay still unaided, thinking each time maybe this will be it. It isn't.

Eventually, once there are tears running down Shane's face, his cheeks a ruddy mess, an endless stream of pathetic, needy noises coming out of him, Ilya gets him up to the edge yet again, and somewhere in his subconscious Shane thinks that if he isn't allowed to come he may actually die.

This time, when Ilya pauses, he doesn't let go of Shane. There's a brief moment of tense silence before Ilya, steadily and seriously, commands "Speak." And what else can Shane do? With hardly any hesitation, he gives the best little yip he can manage. It's strained, it's a little hoarse, but it's undeniably a bark.
