(note: image above is not what is shown in the walkthrough. It is an example piece)
Ingredients:
Art program that has layers and selection tools
Patience (hubris or stubbornness is fine too)
(recommended) photo references of gemstones and/or prisms
(Optional but very helpful) Knowledge on how to use Reference layers and anti-overflow in Clip studio Paint
For this tutorial i am going to use clip studio’s “anti-overflow” feature. This post is not going to explain how to use that specific setting but you should be able to find guides on how to use it on clip studio’s official website or on youtube.
Please Note: The result of this technique will not 100% represent real life gemstones. These are more simplified but should still make an impression of the brilliance and appeal of gems, crystals and diamonds.
If you don’t work in CSP: the best workaround is to use the polygonal lasso selection tool for the same purpose.
This ended up being a long post so I am putting it under the readmore:
First off; Basic idea on how the light refracts inside a solid transparent object:
Wether it is acrylic, glass, water or crystal, the way light pass through more or less should behave the same as long as it is solid and not hollow inside. Pay attention to how the darkest parts of the stone goes along the inner edges, leaving a ”mid tone” sort of in the center. However, this might vary depending on the light setting. But it is a generally good rule-of-thumb to follow if you’re drawing something not based on a photo. Another thing to pay attention to here is how the placement of the highlight will lit up the inside of the gem in a parallel line. It also shows through on the cast shadow.
Light refraction on a cube:
I have already made two posts on this, so definitely go through them:
CUBE BREAKDOWN POST HERE (tumblr wont let me paste the link so i will update this once this is fixed.)
But a rough summary from those two links would be: Every side/facet of a gem or a cube etc refracts the light individually and not as one entity (that would make it look hollow and not solid). Think of it like how each piece in a broken mirror individually reflect your face back to you. Like a weird patchwork!
Putting this into practice:
For this tutorial I’m going to be nice to myself and not try to draw perfectly accurate gemstones. Instead I’m gonna draw them with a more ”natural” looking set of facets. Which actually isnt as common in real world as video games makes us think. Some crystals have geometric shapes naturally, but a lot of other stones are not as fancy. Anyway, im taking artistic liberty on these example stones because the technique I’m going to use will work for these just fine.
So, in clip studio paint, I first draw the stones on a vector layer. I give them facets for the front side. Then I duplicate the layer, remove the front facets and replace them with the facets on the back of the stone. The third image here shows both layers visible on top of each other. I now put these into a layer folder and mark the folder as ”reference”.
Now, on a layer below the lineart folder, fill with your base tone. Then make a layer on top (if you can clip it to the base tone, do that), this layer is where you decide where the highlight will be placed. In some cases the highlight is only lighting up one single facet - it really depends on the design of the stone. You can also blend and soften the highlight here if it looks good for you, just make sure not every facet is highlighted. The highlight layer should be on top of all the other layers clipped to the base tone layer.
Now it is time for the juicy juicy stuff! Turn on both lineart layers so they’re both visible. I hid the hilight layer here because it was in the way, but might not be needed in your case. Make a layer clipped to the base tone and paint in the darkest tone. This is where anti-overflow helps me out, because when i run my brush over all these crossed lines it will make the stroke pop in and out for each facet. If you dont use CSP, this is where you can use the lasso tool and select every second facet. It will take a bit more time but it should work similarly.
After the darkest tones I then make a layer for the inside light that the highlight has lit up. Here i keep it inside the darkest tone but this might vary depending on the light setting. If it looks good to me, then that’s what i stick to.
The way I approach rendering the facets here is like the grid in the example images above, every shade and tone appear more or less in each facet but the amount is relative to their position. So a gradient wouldnt have a smooth transition; it would be slightly scewed in each square on this example grid. Essentially like how some bathroom window glass panes look like.
Now it’s time to hide the lineart layer folder and check if the gemstones look decent to you. If not, then you can look up some reference photos and analyze where the values group together the most; be careful not to focus too much on the photos 500 million sparkles. Squint your eyes or blur the reference and try to see how the overall values behae.
I, personally, am satisfied with these rocks so I slap on a gradient map (you can manually color in them too if that’s your thing) and call it a day. The lit up inside of a gemstone tend to have a brighter and more saturated color than the mid tone.
Other Examples with this technique:
If you look up ”gemstone types” you can often find images displaying various facet types from more than just front view. These can serve as useful base templates for practicing this rendering technique. The backside of a gemstone is called the “pavillion” and is really useful to have at hand when it comes to painting the inner refractions. You can probably also use 3D models and convert the wireframe into lineart. But that is slightly out of my pool of knowledge.
Applying this knowledge without using a base lineart layer is of course possible. In this painting I followed a simplified summary of how the facets sparkle: Keep the highlight shape to match the front facet design, and all the inner refractions should be more scattered and split up but face a direction towards the center of the gem. Now don’t you think this sort of makes the gems look like eyes? That’s right! You can, and absolutely should, apply this on eyes to create the most sparkly anime eyes ever.
Now, refracted light that lands on the surface surrounding gemstones varies depending on the material - and if the gem is inside a metal frame it usually doesnt create this much refraction around it. But I want to have fun so i decided to break this rule in the name of pretty sparkles. :)
I’m rereading your bvd/cci/eds/migraine posts with interest, bc I’m coming at it from the other direction—cervical spine degeneration and my body’s compensation attempts being the cause of the vision and other neurological symptoms, where you seem to experience that compensating for the vision problems exacerbates the issues with your spine.
Did you end up trying the preemptive bracing, since you found that monthly hormone changes caused eds flareups and migraines? What kind of brace, if you don’t mind saying?
And do you find that chiropractic adjustments help or hurt more than massage?
Not asking you for medical expertise, but it is so nice to hear from people who are speaking from the lived experience.
Thank you!
.
I haven’t tried bracing my neck yet, no. I doubled down on cervical stability exercises in PT and that seems to be helping a bit more. (Though I am still on the lookout for a brace that doesn’t break me out in hives.)
And no, chiropractic adjustments of the neck are never recommended for anyone, but especially not for anyone with cervical instability issues. I found this out after a neck adjustment tore all the muscles in my neck and required me to have an MRI to look for a possible brain bleed after I started developing neurological symptoms from the injury. I was bedridden for weeks.
This was not a “bad” or wrongly performed adjustment: it’s just the risk of having your neck adjusted.
It’s been 5 years and I still don’t have full stability on the right side of my neck and often get tingling numbness on that side.
The spinal specialist I saw for my recovery told me he used to primarily see people with brain injuries from car crashes and construction accidents. Now most of his primary patients are people who saw chiropractors and had their necks adjusted.
I still sometimes see a chiropractor for mid and lower back adjustments, and my hips because those pop out of place fairly often and my chiro is better at getting them back in than the local urgent care, but my person uses gentle stretching motions rather than the more abrupt cracking motions. She also refuses to touch anyone’s neck ever. There are far too many vital nerves and blood vessels there to risk it. The fact that she knows this makes me feel safe entrusting my pain management to her.
Massage and physical therapy are how I manage my issues the best.
Mysofascial release therapy has been very helpful for me in reclaiming a lot of my range of motion, breaking up muscle adhesions and building healthy soft tissue. There’s some new-agey bullshit claims about it, but if you find someone who knows how to do it and who doesn’t believe the “cures cancer” horseshit (claims some chiropractors also make) it can be beneficial.
The real long term progress, however, has been from regular physical therapy from providers who know how to deal with my hypermobility.
God, reminds me of the chiropractor I was referred to when I had having back and hip pain, (pre-eds diagnosis, yeesh), who not only set off more pain, but also set off the worst Painful Bladder Syndrome flare that lasted WEEKS, because he didn't take my pelvic floor dysfunction into account when adjusting my hips. I would only ever let a chiropractor touch me now if they were pelvic floor and Hypermobile informed, and this haven't seen one in YEARS.
Myofascial though, God that hurts so good. I need to go see my beloved massage therapist now that I'm 6 months out from my hysterectomy so we can do some abdo work again. Chronic Pain informed to the point I have to fight to get in to see her because she's so popular in the area 🤣
i would shit post more if i had a cool url like hootyhootsbootyboots or bilbogoestobuccees but unfortunately i decided to use my full ass name as my user name because consistent branding across social media or whatever so if i wanna dive in the ball pit with the rest of you fuckers it’s always like
sometimes in art school they tell u to come up with a professional name for branding/work and to use the same name for all ur social media but you cant think of anything good so u just use ur own name bc its relatively memorable and unique and then u make a side blog just for ur art but then several years pass and now u only use your art blog

I think there were teachers who were very pissed off about how good I was at being non-disruptive in class while being an absolute terror to the administration.
I was talking shop with an artist in the studio today and I shared this page from Andrew Loomis, which might be the single most valuable page I've ever encountered in a how-to-draw book. I can't BEGIN to say how many hours this "hanging figures on the horizon" technique has saved me.
I did in fact do Hourly Comic Day yesterday, though I had to finish up today because I got tired and my wrist was being a Jerk. I am never the speediest at HCD, but hey, at least I have been actually doing it the last couple years.
Though I did in fact have a nasty POTS flare all damn day yesterday, so most of this was drawn while spaced out and dizzy, which made me even slower than usual, huzzah?

If there's anyone following the horrific situation at the Dallas Zoo but is maybe confused with the order in which exhibits are being targeted, allow me to explain. Below is a photo of the full map
The zoo is split into 5 sections. There's the main entrance, from which you can go to either The Wilds of Africa, which branches down to Giants of The Savanna, or you can go to Zoo North, which branches down into the Children's Zoo.
It might be worth it to acknowledge as well that Zoo North is the Oldest section of the Zoo, and has undergone renovations in the past few years to better facilitate the animals there.
Every Incident thus far has occurred in Zoo North.
Most incidents thus far have occurred in Zoo North.
EDIT: The markings on this map are incorrect. The Vulture, Pin, was a Lappet Faced Vulture, and was housed not in Wings of Wonder but in the Vulture exhibit in The Wilds of Africa.
The first incident of tampering was in the clouded leopard enclosure. This one made the news, people laughed at the zoo over it, but the escaped leopard was found nearby her habitat and was returned without further incident. I'm not sure many people even realized that the reason she escaped was found to be a hoke cut into her enclosure.
The next day, over in Primate Place, the Langur Enclosure was found to be sabotaged with the same hole cut into it. No langurs escaped.
The third incident ended in the death of an animal. Vultures are kept in the Wings of Wonder area. In the Wilds of Africa, the Lappet-Faced Vulture Pin was found by keepers in a compromised enclosure; the vulture was not dead when it was found, but did ultimately pass away. We don't know details, as this marked the start of an active investigation, but the cause of the vulture's state is assumed to be from human interference.
And now we come to yesterday. 2 Emperor Tamarins were found to be missing. Theft is suspected as they cannot be found within the immediate vicinity of their home. Tamarins have their own Tamarin Treetops exhibit that houses multiple species.
The Clouded Leopard exhibit sits right between Primate Place and Tamarin Treetops. Thus far the biggest outlier in many ways is the Vulture, who was across the Zoo North in Wings of Wonder in the Wilds of Africa.
So there is a pattern to the perpatrators' movement and choices thus far. They've mostly been keeping to Zoo North, and seemingly choosing targets that don't spell certain death for them letting them out, nor for returning the animals should they escape.
I want to reiterate that this is an active investigation; the latest incident occurred yesterday. I am horrified at the situation, and I am so sorry to the keepers and security who are trying to do their job and look after these animals.
That said, I do have some speculation that seems pretty obvious from what information we have.
Whoever is doing this is doing it from the inside. There's been a significant increase in security, police, and cameras around the zoo; it's just nonsensical that ppl with no position inside the zoo would be able to do this.
Frankly, I think this is an attempt first and foremost to ruin Dallas Zoo's reputation. Tbh I feel especially vindicated with that bc the first response of many following Nova's escape was to joke about how stupid a zoo had to be to lose a clouded leopard. But it never got too far beyond that, because Nova was found up a tree nearby, and was retrieved and returned non-violently. Had the Langurs escaped, it could have been trickier than retrieving Nova, but none of them had left through the hole by the time it was discovered. A dead Vulture is a bad look, but I don't think that was the goal. As I mentioned, it was initially found still alive, which I'll get back to in a second.
The newest update is theft. IYDK, it's frozen here. It was frozen Sunday night and all day yesterday, and it's super frozen today. Tamarins don't go far from home even if they were to get out. There is no reason they shouldn't have been found if they were simply escaped. Someone took them to make sure they couldn't be found.
The clouded leopard story didn't end with hatred of the zoo because they were able to return Nova peacefully. The langurs never got to be a story about losing animals. But if the Dallas Zoo hadn't alerted everyone to the theft, imagine how the story of these tamarins could be spun. These ones got out in freezing temperatures, and the zoo was too incompetent to find them.
Which brings me back to the vulture. I think whatever they've done with the tamarins now, they initially tried on the vulture. I think the Vulture was a botched theft that left the bird in a horrific state. I think this because the next criminal action after this animal death wasn't more animal death, but animal theft. Animal death also doesn't track with the initial 2 incidents, which seemed to bank on the animals getting loose and freaking people out. Stolen animals, if not recognized and reported as stolen, would be functionally indistinguishable from a lost animal. If the 2 attempts to cut holes and run didn't go the way the perpetrators wanted, why not steal the animals go be sure. And again, the vulture wasn't found dead, even if it wound up dead.
All this to say, people are targeting the Dallas Zoo, that much is clear. Like I know a lot of people saw the jokes about losing a leopard, but it's actually scary what is happening, and I don't know how it feels to be a keeper rn, trying to do your job but knowing someone or multiple someones you work with are actively putting animals at risk.
This has already blown up a bit, but I had incorrectly shared information about the vulture's location in the original post. It's now been edited and if you can I ask u to share this version instead
Okay, you would think this goes without saying, however.
PLEASE DON'T FUCK WITH ZOOS, YOU WALNUTS.
Okay, so people may be wondering, who the hell would want to fuck around with zoos like this, and put these animals in danger?
Animal activists. I kid you not. There are a LOT of eco terrorist groups that absolutely HATE zoos (Lookin at you, various groups that shit on Oregon Zoo and our Elephant Herd, you pieces of hot garbage). They incorrectly believe that zoos are evil animal prisons and that they should just let all the animals go free and close them all.
Anyone with half a brain of course, knows that zoos are absolutely vital, now more than ever, in the conservation and protection of species that are on the brink of collapse, and help maintain genetic diversity for many species. Many of the larger zoos also participate in research and development of projects to help with tracking and care of wild animals (See: Oregon Zoo's ongoing Polar Bear tracking device testing with our bears, including the Bear Laser and the Bearette. No I'm not kidding.)
I would absolutely bet that these thefts and attempts at discrediting these zoos are "animal activist" wingnuts trying to say that the zoos are irresponsible with their care, and shed them in a bad light. You should know that every single zoo keeper I ever met in my time volunteering absolutely adored their charges, from big primates and bears down to tiny insects, and wanted nothing more than the best of care for them, as well as to educate the public about these amazing creatures we share our planet with. I'm sure those keepers are devastated at the death of Pin the vulture, and the Tamarin keepers sick with worry over their charges.
Anyone who fucks with animals is a piece of garbage human, and has no right saying they care about this planet. Anyone who fucks with Zoos should be forced to sit in the barrel of Primate House Shit and think about what they've done.
Our previous labrador always pooped in my mom's room whenever she'd go on vacation. She'd wait until the day she got back, until she was distracted, then go do it. Every time, without fail, even though that dog only ever did it in the house otherwise if she was sick.
It was very much a way of voicing her displeasure at the disruption in her schedule.
I keep coming across (self included) reoccurring theme: afab autistics being mainly friends with cis (neurotypical) men, because they find them simpler and therefore easier to read
My mother even told me to be friends with guys, because they’re simpler so it’s going to be easier for me. At first I was thinking it was bs, but then I realized all friendships that don’t make me anxious af are with guys and apparently I am not the only one
I am an autistic woman and I tend to get along with most neurodivergents, but most of my friends over the years have been guys. Even when we hang out with my husbands friends I hang with the guys while the girls talk. I feel like there are fewer protocols of etiquette you have to know. Like I can’t accidentally gross people out by talking about my job as a nurse when they’re all telling poop jokes already.
So the only AFAB folks I've ever really gotten along with, ever, have been Neurodivergents of multiple flavors, or Queer. (Because for some reason, queer ladies are also typically more forgiving when it comes to social expectations, at least in my experience).
But as an auDHD my closest friends are three dudes, plus my husband. One of them is also auDHD and we all joke that we pass the same braincell back and forth. My entire life I have found myself easily more comfortable and more able to unmask with people who were raised and socialized male, especially the few NT people who are in my close friend groups.
I had never really fully connected the dots, but um...yeah, this tracks.
This is the worst thing I've ever discovered. it's going to be so detrimental to me.

Fantasy stories should have more "what do you mean you don't do X" things in compare and contrast of cultures. Like the differences between peoples aren't the stuff they show off as "These Are Our Culture :)" things, fucking everyone has food and music and folk tales, but the things they've always assumed that everyone has, and are baffled to discover that they don't.
The people who are always barefoot are baffled that humans don't have a wash basin at their front door where people can wash their feet before stepping inside?? Do they just walk in with their dirty feet? The fuck do you mean you take your shoes off?
Humans don't have small baby-sized spellbooks for toddlers who just learned to read, so they can safely learn to practice tiny cute and harmless, age-appropriate magic spells before progressing to more mature and demanding spells? What, do they just throw teenagers completely unprepared into the arcane - hold the fuck up, is that why human sorceror mortality is so fucking high?
Dwarves who have always wondered why the entrance to human residences is so fucking big, why do you need to take up such a large area for a door that's just there to lead downstairs to the underground halls? Are the timber walls really as thick as a human is tall? What for? And once one of them gets invited to a human house to stay and rest, nobody ever fucking believes her: That's not the entrance, that's the whole fucking house. 100% of the human house is aboveground, there is no tunnel to the underground levels. They might have a single storage room down there, but the aboveground section is so fucking big because that's the whole house.
This post was brought to you by: People who butter their bread and who had no idea that there are people who put mayonnaise on their bread, and people who put mayo on their bread and had no idea about people who put butter on their bread discovering that the other kind of people exist.
Ah yes, nothing like having your Sports Med doc take a look at your shoulder, which has been royally fuckered for several years due to an overwork injury, and ask what your previous doctors did for it.
Previous doctors, or rather previous insurance (*coughcoughKAISERcough*) ran the "If it's not actively dislocated or bleeding, do PT, it'll be fine" method of doctoring. This is the same set of doctors who insisted I couldn't possibly have Ehlers-Danlos, and uh, surprise surprise, they were wrong about that one too.
Anyway, she asked if they did any imaging.
"Oh, yeah they did an Xray, said I had arthritis, but that's it."
"...No you don't. You have a tiny little like, bone spur, right here *points to brand new Xray* but your joint looks fine."
Now at this point I had seen what arthritis looks like, because we'd done this dance already with my hips, and Arthritis looks like little jaggy nastiness on your bones from wear and tear. My shoulder looks great, but I do in fact just have a random floating bone bit in there.
"They didn't do any other imaging?"
"...noooo..."
"How long did you do PT"
"They covered like, six rounds I think."
"How long did it take to recover?"
"Oh it took me SIX MONTHS to be able to draw again, and I still struggle with it from time to time, and I came to you for it because it gets to hurting so bad I can't like, cook or do anything with it. Oh and the left side is starting to do the same thing."
"...Okay we're going to do an MRI of that shoulder to check for Labral Damage. I'm sorry, but hey I've done this one, it doesn't hurt as much as the hip injection does?"
