Trying to draw buildings
yo hereās a useful tip from your fellow art ho cynellis⦠use google sketchup to create a model of the room/building/town youāre trying to draw⦠then take a screenshot & use it as a reference! Itās simple & fun!
Sketchup is incredibly helpful. I canāt recommend it enough.
Thereās a 3D model warehouse where you can download all kinds of stuff so you donāt have to build everything from scratch.

This is an incomplete tutorial, and it drives me crazy every time I see it come around.
We live in a pretty great digital age and we have access to a ton of amazing tools that artists in past generations couldnāt even dream of, but a lot of people look at a cool trick and only learn half of the process of using it.
Hereās the missing part of this tutorial:
How do you populate your backgrounds?
Well, hereās the answer:
If the focus is the environment, you must show a person in relation to that environment.
The examples above are great because they show how to use the software itself, but each one just kind of āplopsā the character in front of their finished product with no regard of the personās relation to their environment.
How do you fix this?
Well, hereās the simplest solution:
This is a popular trick used by professional storyboard and comic artists alike when theyāre quickly planning compositions. Itās simple and it requires you to do some planning before you sit down to crank out that polished, final version of your work, but it will be the difference between a background and an environment.
From Blacksad (artist: Juanjo Guarnido)
From Hellboy (Mike Mignola)
Even if your draftsmanship isnāt that great (like mine), people can be more immersed in the story you tell if you just make it feel like there is a world that exists completely separate from the one in which they currently reside ā not just making a backdrop the characters stand in front of.
Your creations live in a unique world, and it is as much a character as any other member of the cast. Make it as believable as they are.
Great comments and tutorials!
Iām a 3d artist and have been exploring the possibilities of using 3d as reference for 2d poses. I want to add a couple of tips and things!
Sketchup is very useful for environment references, and I assume itās reasonably easy to learn. If youāre interested in going above and beyond, I highly recommend learning a proper 3d modeling program to help with art, especially because you can very easily populate a scene or location with characters!
Using 3ds Max I can pretty quickly construct an environment for reference. But going beyond that, I can also pose a pretty simple āCATāĀ armature (known in 3d as a rig) straight into the scene, which can be totally customized, from various limbs, tails, wings, whatever, to proportions, and also can be modeled onto and expanded upon (for an example, you could 3d sculpt a head reference for your character and then attach it to the CAT rig, so you have a reference for complex face angles!)
The armature can also be posed incredibly easily. I know programs exist for stuff like this - Manga Studio, Design Doll - but posing characters in these programs is always an exercise in frustration and very fiddly imo. A simple 3d rig is impossibly easy to pose.
By creating an environment and dropping my character rig into it, I have an excellent point of reference when it comes to drawing the scene!
Not only that, but I can also view the scene from whatever angle I could ever want or need, including the character and their pose/position relative to the environment.
We can even quickly and easily expand this scene to include more characters!
Proper 3d modeling software is immensely powerful, and if you wanted to, you could model a complex environment that occurs regularly in your comic or illustration work (say, a castle interior, or an outdoor forest environment) and populate the scene with as many perspective-grounded characters as you need!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look at this amazing addition! This is fantastic!
Not just poses, you can also do this with lighting. Playing with lights in Blender is pretty fun.
Another cool thing: http://www.makehumancommunity.org lets you generate a human model. Like a character creator in a game, but more flexible, and the result is ready to import into a 3d editor like Blender.
This was a lot shorter last time it appeared here. Reblogging for the updated tips and to save a life!

Hey I saw your tips for drawing muslims but do you have any for writing them?
hello hello, thanks for the ask!
WRITING MUSLIM CHARACTERS
stereotypes to avoid
ā the āoppressed hijabiā trope
listen, most of us wear hijab because we want to. because we grew up around it. because itās as natural as wearing a shirt. please stop acting as though we all despise our hijab and our religion
ā the āmisunderstanding parentsā trope
why are all muslim parents emotionally or physically abusive in fiction? i personally have an amazing relationship with my parents. also not all muslim parents are trying to suck the joy out of their childrenās lives. theyāre just trying to keep their kids safe. also this trope usually gets pretty racist because the reason they donāt understand their child is because theyāre ānot from hereā and ādonāt get how things are doneā so yknow, avoid that.
ā the āabusive dadā trope
listen. iām fully aware that abusive parents are horrible and something that people should be made aware of, but when every muslim dad in fiction is abusive, thatās just islamophobia. just. give us good relationships with our family!!!
ā the āsilent momā trope
how come muslim mothers in fiction have no lines? have no voice? theyāre just silent products of a household there to cook and clean. what is that all about?? please. just stop
ā the āWhite Boy Romanceā trope
oh, all muslims know where iām going with this Do. Not. Have. A. Hijabi. Take. Off. Her. Hijab. For. A. White. Boy. please. donāt have her take it off, period. but especially not for romance. actually, if your narrative involves a muslim girl stepping away from her religion and taking off her hijab and realizing sheās happier this way, throw the whole story away. iām sorry, but if youāre not muslim, this isnāt something for you to write about. this is not your story to write, and writing it will be extremely islamophobic. avoid a typical romance. muslim romances do not occur the way western romances do. either you gotta be okay with that and write it properly, or you should do your best to avoid it altogether.
THINGS TO DO
ā let them have friends!! let them have muslim friends!! especially if they live in an area that has a high muslim population.
ā let them talk about things that arenāt their religion. listen, my muslim friends and i talk about religion occasionally, but i can assure you, more of our conversation revolves around the hot boy of the week or about whatever shows weāre watching. and in terms of non-muslim friends, religion isnāt a point of tension. we respect and celebrate our differences, and thatās it. we talk about it sometimes, but we donāt argue about it
ā make it clear that weāre muslim without just saying it. have us take a step aside to pray. have a character compliment our hijabs. have us fast in ramadan (or make up fasts in the winter). have us eat halal meat. say bismillah before we eat. say alhamdulillah after sneezing or when weāre thankful. subhanallah when we see something beautiful
ā weāre not nuns. we find people attractive. we discuss it. itās not a big deal
ā make sure we have a personality that doesnāt revolve around our religion. yes, our religion can be a huge aspect of our identity and life, but no, itās not the only thing. make them obsessed with a show. give them nervous habits. what do they collect? are they introverted? you tell me!
ā avoid intimately close friendships with the opposite gender. casual acquaintances is fine, but this is something i would personally avoid writing if possible
ā research what is haram. iāll give you a basic list:
- pork
- meat that isnāt halal
- gelatin (unless itās plant gelatin or from a halal store)
- missing prayers
- sex before or outside of marriage
- cheating in any way
- abuse towards your family (yes, this may come as a shock to some, but itās actually prohibited by islam)
- drinking
- drugs
do more research, of course, but this is a basic list.
i think that about covers it: donāt stereotype us, make sure itās noticeable that weāre muslims, give us personalities, and make sure weāre avoiding haram stuff
before anyone comes at me: iām aware that there are muslims who donāt follow the rules and who do haram things and who donāt like their religion and donāt have stable family relationships etc, etc. BUT when that is our only representation in media, itās islamophobic. show us good muslims, who like their religion, whose religion is their identity, who donāt feel like their religion is causing them to lose out. because we exist.
