Reading Stories, Not Cards.
One of the biggest shifts in my tarot practice has been realising that the cards aren’t meant to be read in isolation.
They’re meant to be read as a story.
I used to ask a question, pull a card, and immediately wonder, “What does this card mean?”
Now I ask myself something completely different.
“What story are these cards trying to tell?”
The difference is subtle, but it changes everything.
Instead of seeing individual meanings, I started noticing movement.
A character carrying a burden.
A moment that changes everything.
I’ve also realised something else.
The quality of the reading often depends on the quality of the question.
Instead of trying to prove a belief or force an answer, I started asking questions that left room for the story to unfold.
Sometimes the answer isn’t what I expected.
Sometimes the cards don’t answer the question I thought I was asking.
Instead, they reveal the question I actually needed to explore.
Whether someone sees tarot as psychology, intuition, spirituality, or simply symbolism, I think its greatest value is this:
It invites us to step back from our emotions long enough to observe ourselves—and our stories—with honesty.
Sometimes the greatest clarity comes not from finding answers…
…but from learning how to ask better questions.
