much appreciated. i wanted to be very precise and brutal with this one and i'm very proud of the result. i'm going to use this opportunity to talk about the title now.

i damn to hell every second you breathe is a lyric from a very simple and subdued pj harvey track. originally, i was going to choose something from the garden, another track from the same album, but none of the lyrics from that song manage to communicate the severity of the subject matter. i wanted something that matched the cruelty of the work.

while the song catherine does not cleanly map onto pearl and scott in this fic, the quiet intensity was exactly what i was going for. neither pearl nor scott demonstrate that kind of seething hatred, but i connected with the chorus on a more visceral level. during the writing process i was alternating between listening to pj harvey and sitting in silence, and during the silent parts, that was the lyric i heard, and felt, over and over.
