“For her performance of “Strange Fruit” at the Café Society, she [Billie Holiday] had waiters silence the crowd when the song began. During the song’s long introduction, the lights dimmed and all movement had to cease. As Holiday began singing, only a small spotlight illuminated her face. On the final note, all lights went out and when they came back on, Holiday was gone.
Holiday said her father Clarence Holiday was denied treatment for a fatal lung disorder because of prejudice and that singing “Strange Fruit” reminded her of the incident. “It reminds me of how Pop died, but I have to keep singing it, not only because people ask for it, but because twenty years after Pop died the things that killed him are still happening in the South,” she said in her autobiography.” [Wikipedia]

Kiki’s Delivery Service movie poster
THE BACKSTORY: THE GUY WAS ON A DATE WITH ANOTHER WOMAN WHEN HE LEFT HER SIDE TO FORCIBLY KISS A STRANGER ON THE STREET - TALK ABOUT “ROMANTIC”!
‘They stopped the show and they said, “The war is over. The Japanese have surrendered,”’ he recalled.
Mendonsa and his date, who would become his future wife, rushed to a nearby bar where the sailor admits he ‘popped quite a few drinks.
As they set on their way, Mendonsa spotted a woman in a nurse’s uniform - he left Petry and rushed to grab her.
‘The excitement of the war being over, plus I had a few drinks,’ he told CBS. 'So when I saw the nurse, I grabbed her, and I kissed her.’
'I did not see him approaching, and before I know it, I was in this vice grip,’ Friedman added.
Of course, that moment of wild elation, gratitude and passion was captured by LIFE photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt.
Mystery solved: A new book 'The Kissing Sailor’ resolves the long-held mystery by revealing 89-year-olds George Mendonsa, left, and Greta Zimmer Friedman, right, as the kissing couple
Friedman recognised herself in the timeless photograph once it was published. 'You don’t forget this guy grabbing you,’ she said.”

UPDATE: for the dopey anti-fems responding to this post, saying “but she was cool with it, they’re pals! Feminist propaganda!”
1. If a guy shot a stranger on the street, and then found out the victim was suicidal, the takeaway isn’t “it’s all good, that behavior was cool.” If you do something shitty and the other person forgives you, great, but that doesn’t make the initial act un-shitty, it makes the forgiver cool.
2. Go look in the mirror and repeat three times, “I am arguing for the right of men to grab strangers on the street and forcibly make out with them.”
Then follow that up with 10 “What have I become?”s
Repeat as needed.
