Deforestation in America (Econ FLVS 6.2)
Deforestation is the mass permanent removal of trees for modern development. The externalities, or unintended consequences caused to third parties, have devastating effects on the surrounding areas. Some of these impacts are loss of biodiversity, raise in risk of soil erosion, and increased levels of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. These count as externalities because they are consequences to other things that the company who was deforesting didn’t take into account.
Believe it or not, deforestation is linked to poverty! According to earthly.org, “Most of the world’s forests are located in some of the poorest places on earth. Of the 1.3 billion people worldwide who live in extreme poverty on less than $1.25, forests directly contribute to 90 percent of their livelihoods.” So basically, when deforestation occurs, these people are being deprived of their main source of income.
If anyone would like to donate to fight deforestation, feel free to head on over to support.nature.org/site/Donation2?df_id=13740&13740.donation=form1. Or you could also write letters to your local or state government.
