tara mentions viv as one of the best players she’s played with ! <3
(also mentioned alex !! )
imagine how good the wsl would be with 5 champions league / europa places and the top 7 (so city chelsea arsenal united spurs brighton lcl) all competing for it, maybe even 8 or 9 teams could be up there fighting 😒 instead we’ve got 3 champions league places (and 0 europa places) in a 14 team league, when the premier league have 8 european places in a 20 team league (they’ve had 9 this year and last!)
I feel like I remember reading something like the top leagues would be able to overpower the other ones, like the quality between all the teams that would qualify for the cl is too big so it’s limited to 3 for the top etc idk about europa 😠maybe the same idea
When there were 2 UWCL spots, 3 teams were fighting for it, Since there’s been 3 UWCL spots, that coincidence with United coming to the WSL so 4 teams have been fighting for it. United have got UWCL twice, so being that 4th place quality team still means getting a chance when another team slips up or has injuries.
But now there’s potentially 5 teams fighting for 3 spots with LCL (if the issue with Lyon gets resolved, which it will) - I don’t know if United will be bothered to increase their budget to keep pace with that. If Arsenal Chelsea City LCL are all chucking loads of money at fighting it out for 3 qualifying places…. United don’t have a good track record of investment so it might be easier to just shrug their shoulders, say it’s not sustainable and give up. Like how Liverpool went from title winners to getting relegated.
lcl is the most likely but I could see tottenham jump united possibly, I truly do hate to see women’s teams basically treated like side projects to drop or abandon whenever any actual work needs to be put into it 😒
rapinoe played 6 club games in 2019 and won the ballon dor over viv, no wonder viv didn’t care about the impact of saying those awards were a joke
truly one of the most frustrating things ever, like my eye twitches

I think it says enough that Rapinoe won the ballon d’orðŸ˜
We have a LOT of good young talent and it’s not like rolfo is a bad player either. We just have no ambition to atttract or keep star players. And skinner isn’t a good tactician.
I genuinely think a different manger could get more out of the team we had last season.
Bear in mind our best year from a tactical standpoint and positioning was when we came 2nd in 22-23 season.
But many people don’t know at the time, Martin Ho (spurs manager) was our assistant and our real tactician. He was always on the sidelines giving instructions and I was hoping after he left to become a manager he’d come back some day. And what he’s doing at spurs gives me so much life but sadness knowing he left (lots of staff also went that year) and we’ve been grasping in for dear life. We only were third the other yr bc city had a disaster with injuries
yeah :/ I don’t even know what it would take for him to be sacked either at this point
it’s honestly a bit sad to see, in the sense that the women’s side can be this overlooked and abandoned still, especially after united has shown they’re capable of getting far in tournaments or being in the top half of the league
barcelona players always have an advantage in the ballon dor because they’re pretty much guaranteed a league title and other domestic cups. winning the wsl and uwcl has never been done, it’s a lot harder.
yup, thats a reason why I feel like younger players are easily integrated into their first team, obviously they a really strong and talented youth academy but if they wanted they could play their bench all season and most likely still have a very easy time winning the league, thats not really possible in the wsl
what annoys me is the fact its not even consistent. ballon d'or had always been massively swayed by major tournaments, it was pretty much a guarantee that if u had a half decent season and then got one of the big trophies either champs league or euros/world cup than it nailed on. big tournament factor was so strong. the one year that they seemed to largely ignore that big tournament factor? of course the year where beth came runner up. not saying alexia didnt have a great season that season because she did and obviously wasnt her fault she missed the euros but she lost the uwcl final that season and missed the major tournament so if there was the same consistency as all years before, beth should have won it. i cant remember the exact stats but that season i think alexia had something like 55 g/a in 60 games and i think beth had something like 60 in 65 games, it was basically both ridiculous but beth had like 5 more g/a but 5 more games too. so the major tournament factor should have tipped it for beth but the pr tipped it for alexia instead and i think alexia herself knew it should have been beth that season too (along with im certain multiple other players that felt the same)
exactly ! it just plays too much of a part in the sport and it’ll end up making majority of individual awards useless (if you don’t already view them that way)
Ella Toone was upgraded in this list .... was she that good this season, has she played regularly, ... 💀
so much things why you can't take this whole thing seriously
marketing may play a role in this ... but the much bigger part should always be about the sport 🤷
100% unfortunately thats not really the case now :/

We are, it’s true ðŸ˜
Supported this club since I was a kid, but I hate so much the state of how our women’s team are treated despite how big we are.
I see more ambition in Newcastle than us and we won’t win the league so long as skinner is in charge
I’m genuinely so curious about if they’ll do much of anything this summer? I know there’s still time, and they have some money to spend but I can’t imagine who they would get right now?
it is a bit jarring to think that lcl is in genuine talks to take uniteds place if not this season, very soon, if united doesn’t start to actually care about the women
Aoba is behind Viv on this list if i remember correctly 🫠(they always put age as a criteria .... and viv is on place 60 i think)
and a lot of young players who often got compared and were not that good this season made a much bigger step forward 🤷
yeah i just don’t care to take it beyond pictures on my screen tbh
It comes down to what players want and you can tell the players that have teams or personalities that push for the PR.
Russo has a lot of PR and her team have done A LOT of work to get her the deals and build her as a brand. Shes arguably one of the most humble and not attention seeking people I have seen that have such a big push of a brand (though I do think its more her family who are obviously in the agent business and what not pushing to build a brand to help her rather than her wanting to be a brand).
Kelly is one that desperately pushes the brand and PR, she loves it and she's managed the couple of key moments in tournaments to get people to remember her even if in general she hasnt had anything stand out of a season or tournament. I mean the fact even when Beth was out with an ACL, Kelly was never able to lock down an England starting position says a lot. Kelly is overrated, she has her moments but she's a better sub than starter.
But then you have the top level players who dont care to build a brand, who dont care about PR and marketing and they just choose to mainly do deals and marketing with causes that mean something to them. These are players that could have arguably built a hell of a bigger PR brand if they wanted especially at their peak moments but chose not to because its not their personality and its not important to them. This is where I feel Beth, Viv and Bunny fit into. I also think Mario Caldenty falls into this as well. They are players that definitely could have built more of a brand and exploited their moments but they just dont care to.
definitely, I guess PR being so heavily involved in the way the media talks about players and their abilities is the annoying part, I’ve said it before but I think CK is massively overrated as a player and I wouldn’t feel so strongly about that if the media didn’t talk about her like she’s the best player to come out of england or something ðŸ˜
then of course awards like the ballon dor have drifted into being so heavily based on PR and who can market themselves the best, which is very dumb as well, it’s one thing for a player to be popular and have a branding that makes them accessible to general audiences but it bleeds too much into the sport and how they’re perceived as players
Imagine United took their women’s team seriously and there was an actual serious competitive deep rooted rivalry between United and City. Would you rather United won 7 league titles in a row or would you prefer they won 6 in a row and then someone like Everton won the next year?
no true I would just be happy they lost, it’s hard to put myself in that mindset because obviously united is very on and off to put it lightly ðŸ˜
lj is on the list, but far behind 🤷
they have some criterias yes, but often cotradict themselves, so i personally do not care about the list ðŸ«
i also do not care 😠but i get why people are annoyed seeing it lmao

I mean it’s complex to make a list like that. Alessia is a marketing monster. Adidas use her massively. Marketing ties into worth, bunny isn’t used to the same way (I think she deserves her own boot at this point)
yeah, when your country is winning that much it’s a bit inevitable anyway
Kerolin might really excel and become a world class player at Barca but Id be very surprised if she ever won the Ballon D'or because I dont think she will ever be at the level to win it compared to others around. Even with the Barca PR, it will be very hard to beat the Barca PLUS Spain PR. Both Bonmati and Alexia have had one where they arguably werent the best player that season nor did they have the big trophy that normally helps.
Beth in 2022 had just as good stats across the season as Alexia, Alexia didnt win the Champs League and she obviously got injured for Euros and Beth won the Euros with best player and top goal scorer. But the Barca/Spain PR tipped it in Alexias favour.
Then last year, well its a joke that Bonmati won it because she wasnt the best Barca OR Spain player last season and again, Barca nor Spain won the CL or Euros. I dont think there was an English/Arsenal player that deserved it but Mario was the better player and she won one of the big titles in the form of the UWCL.
Other example is Rapinoe in 2019 who had a massive PR World Cup, barely played club games and won it on the PR compared to Viv who had a crazy good tournament and won the domestic league and runner up in the World Cup.
Just sadly PR plays WAY too much influence on the Ballon D'or but even if you have the PR to some extent, you are at a massive hinderance when there are a few certain players still playing with massive PR. It happens in the mens plenty of times too, there have been better players in a season but the big PR players get it because they have "fans" or people that vote dont pay attention to the other players much.
And for me, Im not convinced Kerolin will ever get the PR, Top individual season and Big trophy combo season combined with not being up against another one of the big names that have a lot of votes locked down regardless of the season they have.
1000% I think moving to barca will definitely help, but It’s not enough on it’s own, and I just don’t see all those stars aligning at once
