Speaking of hotd’s attempts to shoehorn GOT character parallels in order to boost their preferred narrative, the more I think about show Alicent being a stand-in for Sansa (traditionally feminine non-magical redhead opposing a “genetically superior valyrian demigoddess”), the more I’m like… huh. You know, there might be something to it.
S8 made a lot of targies very upset lol
I mean, some lowly willowy dress-making wench surviving the dragon warlord, not even kissing her royal feet, and then having the nerve to rule after her demise?
Like… independently from the targ-made throne too?.. HUH?!
Considering everything that we know about Condal and Hess as wr🤧ters and that hotd is just a big budget fanfic framing targs of all people as these godsent guardians of light… Would it be completely delulu to presume that the constant humiliation and “humbling” (just… what?) of Alicent kind of reads like revenge fantasy? About someone else in particular? Why does she have red hair again?
Remember, these are the people who very intentionally twist or get rid of everything that makes Rhaenyra look even slightly bad, starting with minor canon details and ending with whole characters. The same people who can’t help themselves but unleash ao3-tire punishment on fictional characters for the crime of opposing “the hero” when the story’s not even done yet and they are supposedly “the author”.
Rhae Rhae is their baby, guys. They’re not here to write an engaging story lol, just make sure this one doesn’t get stabbed after committing mass murder to her heart’s content.
I honestly think Condal and Hess were terrified of the S8 situation happening again, of the mere idea that the world would outlast their precious inbreds no matter how destructive, cruel, and greedy they are. That it would go on to heal while they rot in the ground with their dragons, survivors of their rampage sparing them no thought. Sansa embodies this idea quite effectively, which is why targies hate her so much.
And also why show da*nsa exists in the first place: to bring her down a peg, you know? If not force her to grovel at Dany’s feet and give up her agency again, well, at least make her care about her homeland’s invader, something, anything. Anything but allow Sansa to leave her in the past with all the other monsters she’s had to deal with.
I believe C&H saw glimpses of it all after season 1 with Alicent suddenly gaining strong support and the fandom being divided again instead of blindly glazing Rhaenyra, and knew their favored side would never maintain their pseudo feminist moral high ground if hotd were to follow the source material.
Condal and Hess couldn’t exactly redo a show that wrapped years ago and force that awful treacherous ginger on her knees for poor khaleesi, and I love that for them. Sadly, Alicent is not so lucky.
