Flame retardant chemicals stain the flight line near two C-130 Hercules aircraft at Geiger Field. The chemicals were drained from the modular airborne firefighting systems (MAFFS) installed aboard the aircraft, which are being used to battle forest fires in the nearby White Mountain complex, August 24, 1989. NARA 6447993 

Describing an action that is progress towards a certain goal, or one that is not. Useful when discussing, say, politicians that like to say or do goofy shit to distract from the things they are actually working on.

Nature is not a system in which some species have been assigned specific “purposes”. A better way to think about it is that over time some species have developed the ability to consume food in the form of other animals, which had the effect of establishing a balance between predators and prey. However, terms such as “intention”, “goal” or here: “purpose” imply that there is a deliberate act behind their role, which is of course not the case here.
