reminder for my us-based electorate that today is the day the birdcage is in theaters, and also if you're lucky singin' in the rain will be in theaters june 11th. (i am not lucky and it's not showing near me, but if you can see it big you should see it big.)
#UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH wish I'd known this WAY EARLIER 😭#it's the 30th anniversary of The Birdcage isn't it? and I'm missing out on seeing it in theaters 😞
IT WILL ALSO BE IN THEATERS ON THE 10TH AND MAYBE OTHER DATES AS WELL!!
Just watched Adam Conover (of Adam Ruins Everything) make such a solid point that I think we should spread far and wide. Yes, having AI write your emails is lazy, sure, but people love being lazy. We need to really emphasize that sending AI emails (or using AI responses on social media, or publishing AI flyers, or or or) is rude.
It's rude. You're making someone take their time to read something you couldn't bother to write. You're telling them they were so unimportant you couldn't be bothered to actually take the time to say something yourself. And frankly, you're lying about it while you're at it.
It's rude.

Everyone needs three hobbies: one to give you carpel tunnel, one to leave you sore and bruised, and one for your distant relatives to insist you monetize
You can get all three in the SCA!
STORYTIME. Last February, I sold a mug on Etsy. Common occurrence. Great. After it arrived at its new home, I got an email from the woman who bought it. She thanked me for the beautiful piece and remarked that the handle was perfect—she struggles with arthritis and finds many mugs difficult to hold. I was so touched!
Fast forward to six weeks ago—I receive an email from her husband, explaining he broke the mug (lol) and asking if I’d be willing to take on a commission to replace it. He reiterates how she has arthritis but also shares she used to make pottery, herself, but can only really paint, now. I say of course! Come to find out, he wants a WHOLE SET of mugs to replace the broken one. Even better! I end up making the whole set twice (I wasn’t satisfied with the first attempt), but finally get them packed up and sent off across the country.
I just received the kindest message from the husband, saying “It is not often in today's world that someone does 100% of what they have promised,” thanking me profusely, and sharing that his wife is already happily using the new mugs.
Anyway, I guess the point is that making art is hard. And commissions always cause me a lot of undue stress, but things like this remind me why I love creating and connecting with people. 💙
prev u wanted to see the handles i did too i found the pic on her etsy! stunning mugs

one thing i love about about kathryn janeway is that at least twice a season, she is put through circumstances that would legitimately qualify as a villain origin story if she decided to go off the deep end, but she remains good to the best of her abilities.
this woman routinely goes through situations that has her crew thinking “damn I’m glad I don’t have to make that decision”, and even when she errs, she errs on the side of justice and integrity.
the show directly addresses her depression and guilt from her point of view and other characters (namely Tuvok) address it out loud. she is suffering for the choices she made and makes.
Kathryn Janeway is, perhaps, one of the best female examples of a hero that embodies “heavy is the head that wears the crown” while actively abhorring/loving that everything is her decision.
she could be a villain if she wanted, and justify it. with the loyalty her crew shows her circa season 6 and 7, they’d probably justify it for her. she chooses at every turn not to be and I admire that so much.

People talking abt autism like its a set of quirky silly traits and not an often debilitating neurological disorder genuinely drives me up a wall, especially as someone who's support needs are higher.
"I want a gf with autism :3" ok are you prepared to help them with hygiene tasks? Are you gonna help them with laundry and cleaning their room? Are you gonna be patient with them when they're using AAC? Will you comfort them through meltdowns? Or do you just want a gf who talks to you about dinosaurs and has a cute "neurodivergent aesthetic"?
The minimization of autistic struggles to just "socially awkward sometimes" ends up making higher support needs autistics feel real isolated, because it's obvious that when you romanticize neurodivergence, you're not talking about us.
I tried my hand at one of those two-column (contrapuntal) poems! I have a new level of respect for anyone who writes these lol
You can also read it on ao3 where I learned how to code an HTML table for this.
You know that "every bat fits on this chart" meme post?
I'd like to humbly put this forward.
Image ID: three screenshots of social media posts by @thenutritiontea on facebook.
1st image: "When I think about processed foods I think about how I work with families in public health and many kids have food sensory sensitivities and foods that are processed are their safe foods. I think about how parents are so scared because they read hit pieces about processed foods and think they are wrong for figuring out how to feed their child so their child grows and lives. I also think about how I work with kids and get them to try new fresh foods as well that many of them are scared to try."
2nd image: "True story - a parent was almost in tears today because her child has sensory difficulties and cannot eat fresh fruits and vegetables. We tried giving him a piece of banana and he expelled it right away crying (no he's not allergic).
"I want her to know and to remember that she's doing a great job. She's giving him packaged food in order to feed him and nourish him. This is more than okay because we are all individual and food affects us differently."
3rd image: "This is why I talk about packaged and convenience foods so much. We like to demonize them and list the ways they're harmful instead of highlighting how helpful they are to many. If you also have certain circumstances where you rely on convenience foods, I want you to know that's okay."

I was reading a really long essay recently about the sheer incomprehensible scale of violence that happened during World War II, and among other things, it reminded me that this isn’t the worst time to be alive for the general human population. I can very much picture people during WWII thinking it was the end of days, and for millions of people, it was. Up to 60-75 million people died during WWII, and that doesn’t count those who survived injuries, starvation, occupation, bombings, etc. Millions upon millions of people killed or mentally fucked up for the rest of their lives, and this was after the first World War! Imagine the psychological toll of going through two world wars. None of us really can, nor can we comprehend that body count. WWII was so bad that, just in terms of numbers regarding the death count, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a drop in the bucket. Even the Holocaust didn't make up the majority of the death count, despite killing an insanely high amount of people at an insanely fast pace. It's hard to quantify the worst events in human history, but WWII has to be up there.
Obviously, a shit ton of scholarship has been written on the long-term effects of WWII both on individual societies and the world as a whole, so it's not like the war ended and then everything was fine and dandy, but the fact that human society continued to exist after that at all, and even thrive in some cases, is insane. It's just something to keep in mind as you're inundated with a constant stream of "nothing will ever get better" posts from people clinical depression posting on main. Things were so, so, so much worse not even 100 years ago.
The thing that I keep coming back to as regards WWI and WWII is that not only are they mostly (Flawed) democracies going head to head with (Worse) and aggressive authoritarian forces and winning, you can see authoritarians cynically boosting more authoritarianism to prolong the war with drastic down-the road effects. And EVEN THEN the less bad guys won because it turns out liberal democracies are pretty damn good at training, supply chains, and industrial production vs having "the Warrior spirit" and getting really into autarky and warlord style looting in the 19fucking 40s. (Germany allowing Lenin back into Russia in the hopes he'd take it out of the war. THAT SURE WORKED WELL) It's that in a lot of ways they're a single conflict separated by a generation to enable another tranche of draftees and soldiers to be born. This isn't to say there weren't other causes or that WWII was ABSOLUTELY inevitable... but World War I didn't 'end' in 1919. A bunch of shit wasn't solved.
If the US Civil War and Franco Prussian war are 'previews' of industrial war... the end of WWI looks a LOT like what the early part of WWII looked like. Tactical and strategic air power, tanks, mechanized forces, aerial resupply, coordinated mixed-arms offensives... And the kind of populism and bigotry that drove WWII fascism and imperialism was birthed before WWI and during WWI as well. (the political technology is worth paying attention to as well)
The Great War channel is reasonable pop history that goes in depth, and the creators did another entire channel discussing the wars between the wars. (all kinds of shit around the world that just kept on going) It's worth a watch and has some great cultural and political content. It's not just "MUH DAD WAR STUFF"
The Great War covers the era of the First World War from its causes and origins to its violent aftermath. Jesse Alexander covers the importa
