An Indo-Pacific violet blanket octopus (Tremoctopus gracilis) in Batangas, the Philippines
by mike bartick
Not to brag or anything but I’m Italian and I live in Rome and today they performed Julius Caesar on the literal ruins of the Curia of Pompey. aka the exact place where Caesar got absolutely wrecked in 44 BCE. on the anniversary of him getting absolutely wrecked 💅
🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪 (that’s 23 knives. historically accurate.)
"This makes sense."
I'm glad to see someone speaking out against the myth that clearcuts increase biodiversity. Yes, there are stand-replacing disturbances in nature like large wildfires, landslides, etc. But they don't happen as frequently or on as large a scale as clearcuts. And even a lot of large wildfires still display mosaic burn patterns, in which there are patches of relatively untouched forest amid the burned areas that help repopulate the whole region.
A clearcut, on the other hand, involved bulldozing all the plants beneath the trees to make the trees easier to access, and then cutting down all the trees, or leaving a few sickly specimens behind. Then the land is replanted with a monoculture of whatever cash crop tree the timber companies prefers. That's why the Pacific Northwest is covered in closely-planted stands of <60 year old Douglas fir. Those aren't forests--they're just glorified tree farms.
While there is an increasing number of foresters trying to promote more sustainable and ecologically sound forestry practices, your larger timber interests are generally going to be spouting myths that make themselves look better (if they bother to try for better P.R. at all.) They're also busy lobbying against any conservation measures that could affect their bottom line.
And, for the record, they are directly responsible for the closure of lumber mills and loss of jobs here in the United States because it's cheaper for them to just ship logs across the Pacific to Asia to be processed into lumber. It was never about the spotted owls and old growth forests--that was a puppet show to distract people from corporate decisions that ultimately hurt both nature and workers alike.

Organizing a fandom merch shelf. Still feels unbalanced. I don’t know if I should make room for my music keychain collection, and what else to put into the photo frame.
Something that I first applied to working with children, and have applied in a limited form to working with adults: you don't need to tell someone when they read your instructions wrong. Sometimes it's enough to point out what they did right and then whatever they didn't do? You ask them to do it in more precise words, and you make it sound like it's a new request. Remarkable how fast things get done this way.
This is also a habit I built up from emergency response training. If I say "I need you to bring me a first aid kit and an accident report" and you bring me just a first aid kit, it's so much more efficient to say "thanks now can you bring me an accident report" than "I asked you to bring an accident report why didn't you bring me one".
Once you've internalized "a person bleeding out is one of the worst times to start an argument" you start to wonder what other tasks could get accomplished without arguing
This is the first time I made dolls „from scratch“ and finished them. For that standard I am quite happy with it. Thomas‘ cross is still missing, I lost in somewhere in the rubble, I’ll find it eventually and take proper pictures of them <3
Their clothes are mostly removable, ik the lace isn’t movie accurate but I’m just so in love with lacy liturgical clothes, this lace specifically, look at the suns/stars and raindrops aaaa!!! Id like to give Vincent a leather bag w a little pride pin, thomas maybe a bible and the lhfs glasses and add a clay turtle
I’m happy with some things, less so with others and I’d be happy to hear tips in the comments/rbs

Talking to my traumatized friends like “take your time responding and don’t feel any need to cater to my opinion in this matter just tell me the truth about what you feel. Your feelings are valid. ” and it’s about like choosing where to go to lunch.
Y'all do not know how long it took for me to finally realize "telling other people what I think they want to hear" is not the nicest kindest choice for me to always make. And neither do I, because I'm still learning it, but as soon as I do I'll be sure to tell you How Long It Took.
Because, haha, it turns out? Most people actually don't need to be constantly right, always in control, and perpetually being reassured. And they'll feel funny (negative) when you treat them like they do. Because people mostly assume that how you treat them is a direct reflection of how you perceive them, and they will never assume you're treating them that way because of someone who literally isn't currently in the room.
Wild, I know.
In actuality, people already know you have a preference because that is a very normal thing to have. And because you're never as slick as you think you are, you definitely won't fool anyone by pretending you don't. So the actual kindest choice to make is to just be honest about what you want, because most people will feel most comfortable when they know for sure that the decision you've both made is truly a mutual agreement.
Genuinely? Mind-blowing concept. But a very helpful thing to remember.
