I went and saw Project Hail Mary for a third time and while I was crying during the Sign of the Time scene, as one does, it hit me how just before that Stratt said how it really wasn't hard to send people to die. Then she joined the party and, for a terrible moment, her mental armor slipped, and all those people were real to her. Not just pieces to fit into a mission, but people with loved ones they were leaving behind and dreams they would never get to fulfill.

Small wonder she abruptly left after singing, "We can meet again somewhere, somewhere far away from here."
