Transformational fandom sustains the community when there is no new material for Affirmational fans to consume.

Being a graduate student in sociology, anthropology, media, journalism, communications, or film and being on Tumblr right now must feel like some eldritch entity reached out from nth dimensional space to give you a fully formed thesis subject.

Also true for working professionals in the field and social media/digital strategists. Between this and the return of Bob Iger I have a lot to think about.

“Why are people letting Tumblr get away with charging for nothing checkmarks?!” Because they tell you it’s nothing and this website survives on tips.

Like the issue with the twitter checkmark wasn’t the graphic. It was that they were letting people pay to fuck with the algorithm and break a fundamental mechanic of the website that would make Twitter, where having verification actually served a purpose, completely unusable. Tumblr just says “hey wanna mock those idiots with us?” and people did.

tumblr has managed to monetize spite but in a way that somehow doesn’t feel exploitative and i for one respect it
