lummi was a ~98 year old orca who thought to be the oldest southern resident at the time of her death. she was born in 1910 and was the matriarch of the K7s. lummi was the likely mother of K2, born in 1953, and taku, born in 1955. K2 passed away in 1974, and taku passed away in 1977. for a time lummi was thought to be mother to georgia, as the two were often seen together, though genetic testing disproved this.

onyx, a former L pod orca, joined K pod after his mother’s passing in 2005, and began traveling with older females, especially lummi and georgia. he continued to travel with lummi until she died in 2008.

lummi was known to often take “cat naps” where she’d log at the surface for several minutes at a time. she was recognizable for the two moon-shaped notches in her dorsal fin.
