As if I didn’t love Brooklyn Nine-Nine enough already, last night proved to me, once again, how truly important it is because so many other shows just place female characters into the stereotypes of the “girly girl” or the “cold and tough rebel,” not allowing either to grow or develop outside of these caricatures. Brooklyn Nine-Nine, however, is an exception.

Take Amy, for example. She knows how much harder she has to work as a female sergent, and, because of this, she thinks that if she’s indulging in girlier things that society has mocked and judged women for in the past then she can’t be as strong as she needs to be to prove herself worthy of the position. Not only does she realize though that she can be just as fierce as anyone else while still letting herself take time for her own interests, but they explicitly show that this interest is in no way stopping her from being a total badass, thus destroying a common misconception that femininity can’t coexist with being tough and a leader.

And Rosa? In any other show, Rosa’s character would constantly get irritated and annoyed at Amy’s bubbly personality and maybe even mock the things that Amy places an importance on, but not in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. In Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Rosa not only allows Amy to get excited about wedding dress shopping, but she also encourages it and is the one to help prove to Amy that wanting to take the time to find the perfect dress doesn’t make her any less of a sergent.

This show just constantly and consistently does so, so many things right, and it’s really important to acknowledge every time that it does because it’s helping to set a new and better standard for the way media treats their female characters.

I love this version of self-love because it’s much more feasible for people who are self-conscious. Like it takes years of powerful reconditioning to convince yourself that your flaws, like stretch marks or acne or cellulitis, are attractive. It’s basically impossible for most people.

But learning to say “so what, I’m ugly, there’s more to life” not only overwrites this narrative that we have to feel attractive in some way (which is bs) but also reroutes your actual attention to just, living, instead of examining, evaluating, and judging your appearance
