Every month I reblog this and every month I’m baffled that it’s already the 15th.

I don’t think any piece of art has ever emotionally affected me the way this robot arm piece has affected me. It’s called “Can’t Help Myself” and it’s a robot arm that’s programmed to clean up the fluid that’s constantly leaking out of itself, that looked like a never ending flow of blood. It has programmed dance moves to make it appear to have human gestures. And at first, it seemed happy and proud of its job, dancing around when it had visitors. But three years later, it looks tired, hopeless, and like it’s living in a never ending cycle of constantly trying to put itself back together for the entertainment of other people. And when I found out that it had finally stopped working in 2019, essentially dying, I couldn’t help but imagine the relief it must’ve felt and so I’ve been in here crying over a robot arm. 🥺 It was programmed this way, it truly couldn’t help itself. And no one ever helped him, they just watched.

In this work commissioned for the Guggenheim Museum, Sun Yuan & Peng Yu employ an industrial robot, visual-recognition sensors, and software systems to examine our increasingly automated global reality, one in which territories are controlled mechanically and the relationship between people and machines is rapidly changing. Placed behind clear acrylic walls, their robot has one specific duty, to contain a viscous, deep-red liquid within a predetermined area. When the sensors detect that the fluid has strayed too far, the arm frenetically shovels it back into place, leaving smudges on the ground and splashes on the surrounding walls.

Sun Yuan & Peng Yu are known for using dark humor to address contentious topics, and the robot’s endless, repetitive dance presents an absurd, Sisyphean view of contemporary issues surrounding migration and sovereignty. However, the bloodstain-like marks that accumulate around it evoke the violence that results from surveilling and guarding border zones. Such visceral associations call attention to the consequences of authoritarianism guided by certain political agendas that seek to draw more borders between places and cultures and to the increasing use of technology to monitor our environment.

A lot of publicly accessible Google Drive links will no longer be accessible later this year unless their owners opt out of new security enhancements. These enhancements are being brought to Google Drive on September 23rd, 2021, the company announced in a blog post today.

Once this change goes live, Google says that users will need a “resource key” to access a publicly shared link. However, users won’t need an updated link with said resource key appended if they’ve already accessed that file before in the past. As a result of this change, we can imagine that lots of Google Drive links shared online on forums and other sites will no longer work as their owners neglect to update them, leaving them only accessible to the people that have already clicked the links before. This comes after Google also announced similar changes to YouTube’s unlisted videos earlier today.

According to the post made on the Google Workspace blog, this won’t affect all files. Users who have shared a file that is affected by this change will get an email from Google informing them of this change and how to opt out of needing those files from being updated. These emails will be sent out to users starting on July 26th. Google shared a copy of a sample email to show end-users what the message they’ll get will look like. The company doesn’t recommend opting out all files and says that only the files that you want publicly accessible should be opted out. Users have until September 13th to decide if they want the update applied, so if you have no files that are publicly accessible, then you won’t need to do anything.

YESS!!! this cannot be stated enough! I started to feel more comfortable within my own body once I started using reusable products for menstruation. It is a good bit of an upfront cost, but so worth it! Period underwear and pads are wonderful. Cups are great too for people who are comfortable with them :) Talk with your fellow people with periods! We all need to work on de-stigmatizing this; men, women, nonbinary, and those who are unsure. :)

The dreaded ampule

One of my pharmacy techs showed me something the other day and blew my mind. I couldn’t believe I didn’t already know this so (after getting over my imposter syndrome) I asked other newer pharmacists and none of them knew this either! Brace yourself for some wizardry.

The ampule

You know it. You’re a little nervous about it. We’re all friends here so no need to lie.

And once you open it, if you’re at all like me, you withdraw medication from an ampule like this:

But guess what! If you turn the ampule upside down, surface tension keeps the drug inside of the ampule so you can draw like a normal human being with a vial!

God damn wizardry

Probably every nurse on the planet knows this, but remember that we new pharmacists are basically walking textbooks. I like to still know this stuff since it’s my job, and so I’ll be helpful in emergencies.

Speaking of, emergency department pharmacists do this all of the time. Stop using gauze to snap the neck of the ampule at the risk of your poor fingers. Here’s an E.D. pharmacist explaining how to use the needle filter cap instead.

Every paramedic also knows this! Plus the funny arm swing that’s better than tapping for getting all the fluid down to the bottom of the ampoule.

I learned to rip open an alcohol prep along the edge, put the top of the ampoule in next to the prep, use that to protect your fingers while you break it open (and clean it at the same time), then toss the whole thing right in the sharps box!

Yes! You hold the pointy tip between your thumb and first finger, then swing your arm around once, like this:

It looks a little crazy, but it gets the job done. Just maybe check to make sure there isn’t anything (or anybody!) behind you first.

You know I googled this for a while and never found anything that explained it as well as your perfect gif selection?

Also I realized why I’ve never had this problem. Every ampule I’ve ever faced has been stored in my pharmacy, perfectly upright next to all of the other ampules in the box, so not much medication above the neck. Not much chance to rattle around in a box or a drawer. Yet another example of how I need the other health professions to explain to me what happens to my drugs when they leave my hands!

I like the alcohol swab technique because it ensures that the ampule is being swabbed, but I like the filter needle cap technique even better because that’s what I’m more afraid of forgetting: to use the danged filter needle!

Why am I reblogging this now? Because I prepared antibiotics for an IV infusion in theatre for the first time today and was faced with the dreaded ampule. As soon as the anaesthetist saw me trying to gingerly draw with the opening face-up and pointed out that I could turn it upside-down and the liquid wouldn’t fall out, I instantly remembered reblogging this.

Am I excited that I remembered this post? Yep. Am I low-key annoyed at myself for having read this cheat-sheet post and been forewarned and still not realised immediately? Also yep. x)
