okay so prefacing this with i'm going to see the odyssey on tuesday because my friend with possibly the most discerning dramatic taste wants to know my opinion. so i have not yet seen the movie and so CAN ONLY HAVE A LIMITED OPINION ON A MOVIE I HAVEN'T SEEN
but can i just say that as a person with a classics major/latin teacher mother the conversations her circle is having about the movie versus what i see on tumblr is FASCINATING
her circle of primarily latin teachers and other classics freaks like. could not give less of a shit about nobody being cut i had to tell her people were upset about it because tbh she didn't even notice it. they're mad about the fact that he changed the ending and removed the deus ex machina.
my mom's biggest gripes were that she didn't feel like the threat to odysseus was emphasized enough when he left (her words were some variation of "no telemachus on the beach") and that the scylla design was lame because there were no dog heads (valid and i agree with her)
i am NOT SAYING you shouldn't criticize chris nolan for decisions made in the movie but i am saying that like. criticizing him for cutting parts of THE ODYSSEY, the book you could genuinely factually make six seasons and a movie out of is maybe not the educated take you think it is especially given that, as far as i've been told, he chose his piece to make his point specifically.
which is what you'd have to do if you wanted to make the odyssey a movie in the first place
