i think that the names that aesthetics are given matter a lot. people respect afrofuturism and it's a solid aesthetic but if it was called afropunk, i think people would be meaner to it. on the other hand, if solarpunk was instead called solarfuturism or something, it wouldn't attract the same derision. the obsession with the punk moniker is a purely negative element of any developing subcultures

there is an actual aesthetic to solarpunk, or to nasapunk, or to many other such movements. but by giving it the name, they're suffocating the baby in its crib, forcing it to be a subculture before there is something to base a subculture around. there were cyberpunks, steampunks, and afrofuturists before there was cyberpunk, steampunk, and afrofuturism. if people really cared about these things, they would let the aesthetic cultivate within a larger subculture, as cyberpunk, steampunk, and afrofuturism developed out of sci-fi, before becoming their own things
