Ok since i saw this yesterday I have grown fascinated and gone on a deep dive. First of all, Kim Beaton invented that concrete-and-rubber-fibers stuff she mentions. It is called Pal Tiya Premium, and there is a whole youtube channel with all the information about how to mix it and use it. https://www.youtube.com/@PalTiya She makes a giant sculpture of The Great A'Tuin and Discworld with it!!!
Secondly, it cures in air alone, no oven or kiln required, and unlike clay it has microscopic shrinkage between wet and dry, so you can pack it around glass or whatever. When she says you can stand on this stuff, yes, you can (though for very large sculptures or very narrow sections of a sculpture, she recommends adding a metal armature for extra strength). It is impervious to water, so it can go outside in any weather, and any metal armature encased inside it won't rust
Additionally, Pal Tiya Premium can be added to at any point in the curing process, even weeks or months later, so you can make a sculpture in several pieces and, like with a mold, remove the foil core you sculpted on so you can use it again and again (though you have to add a sacrificial layer of foil between the core foil-sculpture and the Pal Tiya (see the videos on the youtube channel about it). You can color it with oxides, concrete stain, inks, or acrylics, including exterior-grade house paint so your sculptures can go outside.
Holy crap. My only question now is what am I going to make with this stuff, what do i need to have in my garden, aaaaaaa
one of my favorite tidbits about speedrunning that comes up every time the games done quick marathons come around is how Wind Waker speedruns are about five hours long because of the giant wall in Hyrule that actually forces the runner to play the game because theyâve been throwing shit at this wall for over a decade and still canât figure out a way past it. the wall in hyrule is entirely unglitchable and the only way past it is to play the game properly. the speedrun would be like one hour if they could get past this wall but nope, itâs five hours. fuck the wall.
and the comedy of this situation is exponentially amplified the more you know about skips and glitches in speedruns in general
as examples of how broken WW is elsewhere, you can clip through walls and go out of bounds to skip entire dungeon sequences pretty much anywhere with a ledge, use the Wind Waker to enter a state where you ignore physics and swim at 5000 miles an hour, and even fly infinitely into the sky after dying like some kind of helium zombie. do you know how many games could be broken wide open by an infinite height trick? TTYD would shave off 3 or 4 hours.
but this fucking barrier around Hyrule Castle, against all odds, is just completely insurmountable with any of this. Ganondorf is literally the most successful and powerful villain in gaming history and this Super Extendo Fuck You Shield⢠is a shining testament to it
This is the kind of information I want on my dash
Okay but do you have any idea just how big the Super Extendo Fuck You Shield⢠actually is? Try approximately four times the height of the castle itself.
And not only that, but even if you get over the invisible wall, thereâs another barrier that causes damage and knockback. So even if you managed to get over the invisible wall part of the Nintendo Containment Systemâ˘, thereâs still an additional, cylinder-shaped barrier that will do damage to you and knock you back out, even if you try to get in from the top or bottom. That castle has more security measures than Fort fucking Knox and itâs all to give a middle finger to speedrunners wanting to finish the game in an hour. Itâs fucking wild.
https://youtu.be/7XBPrFYN1MU
As of July 2019, the barrier has been defeated in all versions of the game, and the current World Record is 1hr 04m50s. The current method is to give yourself seventy invisible grappling hooks, which corrupts so much of the gameâs memory that thereâs not enough left over to load the barrier (or a lot of other things, like enemies or cutscenes. Itâs amazing). You can just walk right trough where itâs supposed to be.
Cant believe the only way to beat The wall⢠is to stop it from ever existing in the first place
The line âseventy invisible grappling hooksâ killed me
World Heritage Post
Sherlock Holmes modern adaptation but the main characters (Sherlock, Watson, Mrs. Hudson, Irene Adler, and maybe even Lestrade) are all vampires and theyâve just been doing their thing since the time period of the original books
Irene gets to be from New Jersey like she is in canon and sheâll occasionally show up and help Sherlock with a case but they donât ever date or hook up or anything
OR⌠Lestrade isnât a vampire, but thereâs been generations of Lestrades, and they all have to deal with this guy
the latest one isnât even a cop she works nights at the 7-11 and Sherlock keeps coming in at 2am to slam two gallons of Monster Energy and ask her what what the fuck an âamogusâ is (itâs case related) and tell her how much better she is at lateral thinking than her tragically straightforward ancestor and also is her girlfriend still going to school to be a defense attorney, howâs she handling the workload
okay, but who turned them and when? bc there is a lot of delicious angst and goofiness to be exlored if say:
irene has kids before being turned and is invested in her descendants
john was already with mary and has to see her age and pass
mrs. hudson is the vampire queen
the lestrades are like. the opposite of the vanhelsings. generational disinterest in vampires, but the holmes enclave keeps roping them back in.
1) Irene adopts and yes she is The Cool Grandma for generations of children forevermore
2) Mary is also a vampire, she got turned at the same time as John, she and Sherlock have Wine Wednesdays every third Saturday of the month
3) Mrs. Hudson is immortal but sheâs not a vampire and nobody can figure out what her deal is
4) absolutely 100% correct
whenever anybody asks how they got turned the response is something along the lines of âthat was like. Over five years ago. How do you expect me to even remember that.â or âidk man I just woke up like thisâ or âgot bitten by a mosquito on a caseâ and itâs never the same twice
Yes the Sherlock Holmes books exist and whenever theyâre brought up Watson gets very upset that this dude stole his writing and considers him his archnemesis despite the fact that Doyle is a totally normal human and dead as hell
imagine Watsonâs frothing rage at the Doyle estate insisting Holmes can never be shown having emotions. like he didnât personally watch Sherlock weep during the moon landing.
Holmes and Watson are embroiled in a legal battle against the Doyle estate and have been for almost 100 angry, angry years
this is only ever mentioned in passing for comedic effect
Okay, but consider The Problem (Aka Sherlock Holmes) doesnât hit ALL The Lestrades, only those that Holmes can rightfully refer to as âInspector Lestradeâ. Obviously, police inspectors and detectives are affected by The Problem (as family lore refers to Holmes) but, like, subsequent generations have learned how loose the definition is. Our latest Lestrade, letâs call her Billie, gets called up by her boss one day, and her boss is like âhey, Corporate says somebody at the store needs to know about health regulations and stuff. If you take a couple night classes and get this certification, weâll give you a bonus on your next paycheck, and one of your jobs will be to sign off that we donât have mold everywhereâ. And Billie is like âSure, sound good, whateverâ and goes to the night classes and takes the test at the end and the tired bureaucrat who runs the course is like âOkay, congratulations, youâre now a Certified Health And Hygiene Inspector (Class D-Small Retail Food Storage and Service)â And Billie just freezes and is like âUmmmm, is it possible to get something different? Maybe I can be a Health and Hygine Expert? And the bureaucrat is like âNo, you passed the test, youâre now a Certified Health and Hygiene Inspector (Class D- Small Retail Food Storage and Service)â  And Billie is just SWEATING as she leaves the building, because she knows about The Problem, but maybe this wouldnât count? Like, itâs not like she works for the government or anything. Itâs just a dumb piece of paper that says sheâs allowed to fill out other dumb pieces of paper. That canât count. Itâs not like her JOB changed or anything. But, as soon as she steps out into the night and makes her way to the Bus stop, a slim figure steps out of the shadows and falls into step next to her. âAh, Inspector Lestrade, congratulations on the promotion. I have a few questions for you about-â And Health And Hygiene Inspector (Class D- Small Retail Food Storage and Service) Billie Lestrade repeats the three words that have become motto and mantra for her family. âGo Away Holmesâ.Â
I havenât laughed this hard in ages, 10/10!
It was a fun day for the crew too!

things english speakers know, but donât know we know.
WOAH WHAT?
That is profound. I noticed this by accident when asked about adjectives by a Japanese student. She translated something from Japanese like âBrown big catâ and I corrected her. When she asked me why, I bluescreened.
What the fuck, English isnât even my first language and yet I picked up on that. How the fuck. What the fuck.
Reasoning: It Just Sounds Right
Oooh, donât like that. Nope, I do not even like that a little bit. Thatâs parting the veil and looking at some forbidden fucking knowledge there.
How did I even learn this language wtf
I had to read âbrown big catâ like three times before my brain stopped interpreting it as âbig brown catâ
Iâm kinda reading âbrown big catâ as âbrown (big cat)â, that is, a âbig catâ - like a tiger or lion or other felid of similar size - that happens to be brown. âBig brown catâ, on the other hand, sounds more like a brown cat thatâs just a bit bigger than a regular housecat - like a bobcat or a maine coon cat or something like that.
yeah, a brown big cat is almost certainly a puma. a big brown cat is probably a maine coon.
yeah, if you put the adjectives out of order you wind up implying a compound noun, which is presumably why we have this rule; we stripped out so much inflection over the centuries word order now dictates a huge amount of our grammar
Just looked up why we do this and one of the first lines in this article is, âAdjectives are where the elves of language both cheat and illumine reality.â so I know itâs a good article.
Things this article has taught me:
This same order of adjectives more or less applies to languages around the world. âItâs possible that these elements of universal grammar clarify our thought in some way,â says Barbara Partee, a professor emeritus of linguistics and philosophy at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Yet when the human race tacitly decided that shape words go before color words go before origin words, it left no record of its rationale.
One theory is that the more specific term always falls closer to the noun. But that doesnât explain everything in adjective order.
Another theory is that as you get closer to the noun, you encounter adjectives that denote more innate properties. In general, nouns pick out the type of thing weâre talking about, and adjectives describe it,â Partee told me. She observes that the modifiers most likely to sit right next to nouns are the ones most inclined to serve as nouns in different contexts: Rubber duck. Stone wall.
Rules are made to be broken. Switching up the order of adjectives allows you to redistribute emphasis. (If you wish to buy the black small purse, not the gray one, for instance, you can communicate your priorities by placing color before size). Scrambling the order of adjectives also helps authors achieve a sense of spontaneity, of improvising as they go. Wolfe discovers such a rhythm, a feeling-his-way quality, when he discusses his childhood recollection of âbrown tired autumn earthâ and a âflat moist plug of apple tobacco.â
Brain scans have discovered that your brain has to work harder to read adjectives in the âwrongâ order.
TL;DR: No one knows why we do this adjective thing but itâs pretty hardwired in.
@deadcatwithaflamethrower Linguistics tidbit.
Since itâs never credited, this is from Mark Forsythâs The Elements of Eloquence, and just one reason why I think itâs required reading for anyone interested in prosecraft. Every page is this useful.
Devastating to have more evidence that done IS better than perfect
Additionally, findings indicate that the act of doing shows you that you were not seeking perfection, you were fearing inadequacy
@grey-and-lavender
#oh that last line gutted me #is there a place between perfect and failure?
Good news! There is!
Bad news! It is called 'done'
⨠fuck â¨
please god watch this right now
The editing of this video is hysterical and genius- they switch between so many editing styles to reflect exactly what kind of thing they're going for in each segment its GREAT.
There's an absolute genius to the way they mimic so many different styles but also never slip away from the "filmed at 3am in a dorm with harsh lighting" vibe
young man. what is that you have found.
I said young man. you picked it up off the ground.
I said young man. you should put that thing down.

You look like you've seen a ghost
I might be too old. History keeps repeating itself. I remember when the internet was obsessed with Black Bird, a manga about a girl and a dangerous crow boy. And now I hear that the internet is obsessed, once again, with a story about a woman and a dangerous crow man.
The excerpt paragraph made me look up and stare at my wife for three solid minutes waiting for them to return to the couch. I couldnât move on with my life. I had to read it aloud to them to their audible disgust and then they read all the comments with unbridled delight.
Now we keep repeating âLike Zorro.â
Im so sorry to subject everyone to this
But genuinely, cure your imposter syndrome guys. Look at what passes for publication. And realize that you are, in fact, better.
Queen you surely did cure my imposter syndrome, but I also miss the person I was 3 minutes ago
currently writing something and...yea i feel about a thousand times better about it wow

yeah okay
no no, share this addition with the class
Whenever I take a long car ride I end up exhausted afterwards, and Iâm always like âwhy am I so tired? I was just sitting around doing nothing all day.â
But the answer, it turns out, is I was doing something. Riding in a car jars your body in many directions and requires constant microadjustments of your muscles just to stay in place and hold your normal posture. Because youâre inside the car, inside the situation, itâs easy not to notice all the extra work youâre doing just to maintain the status quo.
Thereâs all sorts of type of work that we think of as âfreeâ that require spending energy: concentrating, making decisions, managing anxiety, maintaining hypervigilance in an unfriendly environment, dealing with stereotype threat, processing a lot of sensory input, repairing skin cells damaged sun exposure, trying to stay warm in a cold room.
The next time you think youâre tired from ânothingâ, consider instead that youâre probably in situation where youâre doing a lot of unnoticed extra work just to stay in place.
opening my bodyâs task manager to see whatâs taking up all my cpu
Also, just to add: we should not lose sight of the fact that the mammalian brain is a ridiculously energy-hungry organ. A human brain makes up 2% of the bodyâs weight and volume and 20% of its caloric requirement. Thinking is physical work.
Competitive chess players carb-load before tournaments. And lose weight in the process.
It took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize that thinking physically takes up energy. I would be like âwhy donât i have energy Iâve been sitting inside studying all dayâ ma'am itâs because the phrasings, evidences and vocabularies in your brain are eating the energy
If Iâve been really focused on crafting or something, there will invariably come a point where my brain is just like âWarning! Warning! Out of Energy!â.
Getting a snack usually fixes it.
I get post-exertional malaise from just⌠Going places. I sit in a wheelchair, I take one bus and spend some time in a different building⌠And when I get home, Iâm sick.
This post helped a little cause I always feel bad about it.
leaving the house is abso-effing-lutely EXHAUSTING and itâs okay to BE exhausted after having to do stuff
