What first sparked my curiosity about the French Revolution was Victor Hugoโs description of Enjolras in Les Misรฉrables. He wrote that Enjolras "would have been Saint-Just in the Convention." Iโve always loved Enjolras for his passion and clarity of purpose, so naturally I started wondering what kind of person Saint-Just must have been.
When I looked him up, I was kind of shocked. Saint-Just was apparently known as the "Angel of Death," one of the key figures behind the Reign of Terror, working closely with Robespierre. Together, they were said to have sent countless people to the guillotine. Before this, all I knew about the French Revolution came from high school history classes in China. And those textbooks mostly focused on Robespierreโs (fake, but famous) so-called epitaph, which portrayed him in a pretty negative light.
I couldnโt understand it. Why would Hugo compare someone as noble and inspiring as Enjolras to a man with such a terrifying reputation? That question stayed with me, so I started digging deeper. I read some books, both general histories and biographies, trying to really understand who Saint-Just and Robespierre were.
The more I read, the more surprised I became. They werenโt monsters, and they werenโt saints either. But they were good people. Flawed in some ways, yes, but sincere, committed, and trying to build something better.
Itโs honestly kind of surreal. More than two hundred years have passed, and yet the narrative shaped by Thermidor still dominates how we see them. Even today, most people who look them up will come away with a completely distorted view, shaped by shallow summaries and old propaganda.
Never read les mis but having to look up Saint-Just was also my gateway drug. Read a book about paperwork that just starts talking about him - not an intro in sight, not even a first name, like Cher, like I'm supposed to know who this is lol when my French Revolution education amounted to Evil Robespierre.
Definitely a surreal experience. I think I read past the "Angel of Death" part out of pure morbid curiosity.
Well thanks Saint-Just for thrusting subsequent undereducated generations into the reality of the Revolution โค๏ธ
