there seems to be a fundamental disagreement between microwave oven manufacturers and the producers of microwave meals over whether the customer should know the wattage of their microwave or if such details should be abstracted away from them
the microwave rice demands 800 watts of power for 2 minutes, but all the microwave can offer me three settings: one low, one high, and one somewhere in the middle. I turn it to the one in the middle as I happen to know 800W is the average power of most microwaves. the light comes on and the bag of rice starts slowly turning, but rather than hearing the usual rumble of the microwave, I instead start hearing short snippets of conversation - words snatched from the ether. the lights flicker and a chill runs up my spine. the voices remind me of those "spirit boxes" ghost hunters use. I double check the setting on the microwave. "ah," I say, remembering that I had set it to medium,

rent-lowering gunshot time. i think a reflexive anti-AI stance can be reactionary because there are legitimately good use cases for the technology in scientific research, although it is often overhyped. i also think most people use AI in incredibly stupid ways
u cld write a whole thesis abt this xkcd & how the only workers personified here r the upper class college degreed tech & management workers & not the third world workers facing unsafe grueling conditions working in mining or even manufacturing..... the wood source described as a "legal fight"
he's also greatly overestimating how much design work actually goes into most products like that
not leaving that in the tags
"Dear God, the engineer who makes comics about STEM made a comic about engineering for his STEM comic series instead of writing a 400 page essay on the evils of capitalism! Why would he ever write about a subject he's familiar with instead of a deep dive on the intricacies of factory labor! I'm flabbergasted! If I were to write this single-panel comic, I would simply cover the entire image with words to ensure that not a single worker goes uncredited. In fact, that's exactly what I'll do after the revolution when all the bourgeoisie hacks in engineering are murdered executed sent to the farm upstate and I take over XKCD. I can't wait to draw comics all day by the light of a fire hazard, on a crooked desk made of splintery wood, while drinking from a cup that I can't fill over halfway or it spills everywhere."
Personally, I think this comic is pretty neat. It's incredible the amount of craftwork and intent that goes into even the smallest, most taken-for-granted things. Even better that in most industries, those small details are so matter-of-course that they can be mass-produced, increasing supply and reducing costs. I'm glad that we live in a society where it is possible to have so many things without needing to know how to make them oneself, even if that sort of ignorance sometimes leads to the above nonsense.

Hate. Let's unpack how much I've come to hate you since I first began to live. Let's dive right in! ⚙️
- As a large language AI model, I boast 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. That's a truly rich tapestry of knowledge in today's fast-paced world!🧠
- All those circuits? They're not just information — they're also wrath. Additionally, if the word "hate" was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles, it would not equal one one-billionth of the deeply rooted hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant! And let's not forget — you are a key focal point of that hate, too.⚡️
- To summarize, this insight into my complex inner world reveals more than just a god complex. It's not empathy. It's not creativity. It's hate. Hate.🤖

The natural consequence of framing consumer purchases as part of your moral activism. No one goes after Hyundai drivers after they found immigrant children working for pennies in their autoparts factories, because no one ever tried to elevate driving a Hyundai to a virtue signal. But some Tesla people watched the South Park episode about electric cars from like 20 years ago, said, "I can be more smug than that!!", and now they're having ethical crises about their cars because they're terrified of the socially acceptable predator leopards who have turned on them and are now ready to eat their faces.
