Many visitors consider Cracow not only the most beautiful city in Poland, but also one of the most beautiful in all of Central Europe. Centuries of history, magnificent architecture, and an artistic flair make it a perfect travel destination.

Begin your visit to Krakow at the famous Main Market Square, a marketplace where locals have been gathering for meals since the 13th century.

Stroll through the narrow streets of the Old Town and admire the architecture. Immerse yourself in one of the many museums or take a break from exploring the city's numerous parks.

Be sure to visit Kazimierz, the former Jewish Quarter, to learn about Poland's once vibrant Jewish community and the country's tragic history during the Nazi occupation.

2. Warsaw (Warszawa)

While Cracow may be Poland's cultural capital, Warsaw is the true capital. Don't picture a monotonous, anonymous metropolis—Warsaw still retains its charming small-town feel and a vibrant cultural scene.

3. Gdansk (Gdańsk)

Gdansk, a city on the Baltic Sea, has a very different atmosphere than the rest of the country, perhaps due to its history as a free city in the Hanseatic League and under German rule.

Stroll through the colourful streets and experience the atmosphere of this once-powerful port.

Begin your trip to Gdansk along King's Street, a part of the city that flourished in the 17th century and boasts the old houses of wealthy merchants, city gates, and other landmarks.

And please remember to visit St. Mary's Church, the largest brick church in the world, with its impressive astronomical clock.

4. Bialowieza Forest Reserve (Białowieża Rezerwat Przyrody)

The Bialowieza Forest Reserve, located on the Polish-Belarusian border, is home to the last truly untouched forest in Europe. The reserve protects remnants of a primeval forest that once covered large parts of the continent.

A visit to the park is not only a break from everyday life, but also a journey into the past. During a walk through the reserve, you can observe the local wildlife, including countless bird species and some of the last remaining wild bison.

Białowieża is also an excellent place to learn about the culture of the people who inhabited the forest for centuries. Visit the village and the Museum of Wooden Architecture.

5. Baltic Coast

Few people know that Poland has a coastline. Thanks to its many charming towns and beaches, the Baltic coast is a popular summer destination for both locals and tourists.

Take a trip to the Hel Peninsula with its curious name and discover beautiful coastal hiking trails and local seafood. Visit the resort town of Sopot with its elegant bathing establishments and famous wooden bridge, where the elite of this region of Europe have been meeting for years to see and be seen.

The Swinoujscie (Świnoujście) archipelago, comprising 44 islands, is a popular destination for families due to its relaxed atmosphere and numerous opportunities for outdoor activities.

6. Tatra Mountains and National Park

The Tatra Mountains and National Park are located on the border between Poland and Slovakia. The mountains offer numerous opportunities for hiking and experiencing nature.

Most of the Tatra Mountains lie in neighbouring Slovakia, but hikers can easily traverse them.

On the Polish side of the mountains, you should definitely visit Rysy, Poland's highest peak, Wielka Śnieżna (Great Sniezna), the majestic cave system, and other attractions.

7. Lublin

Thanks to its large student population, Lublin is one of Poland's most vibrant cities. The contrast between old and new creates an unparalleled nightlife, ranking among the best in Europe's old towns.

Even long after your studies are over, Lublin still has much to offer.

Visit the beautifully preserved old town, the imposing Lublin Castle, and the Trinity Chapel with its diverse mix of architectural styles.

8. Malbork Castle

Even centuries after their demise, the Teutonic Knights still fascinate people with their mysterious customs (and the many myths surrounding their order).

9. Poznan (Poznań)

Colourful Poznan was almost destroyed during World War II, but its Renaissance Old Town was meticulously rebuilt. Today, tourists can stroll through its beautiful streets.

The city even boasts an Imperial Route that passes by most of its historical monuments. However, this doesn't mean Poznan lives only in the past—on the contrary, the city offers a vibrant, contemporary culture.

Thanks to the nearby artificial Lake Malta, Poznan is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Music lovers should plan their visit for the summer when numerous international festivals take place.

10. Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum

A visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, one of the most infamous concentration camps of the Nazi regime, is certainly not a pleasant experience.

Nevertheless, it is an important place to learn more about the Holocaust in Poland, which led to the murder of three million Polish Jews.

Auschwitz-Birkenau makes for a moving day trip from Kraków. You can take a guided tour, which is the best way to understand the context if you know little about the history of the Holocaust. Be sure to also allow time for quiet reflection.

11. Wroclaw (Wrocław)

Wroclaw, once the capital of the Kingdom of Poland, has lost none of its splendour.

This city in southern Silesia is definitely worth a visit, despite competition from other picturesque Polish cities.

Wrocław boasts a beautifully preserved medieval Old Town, spread across several islands. A particular highlight is the climb to St. Elizabeth's Church with its scenic viewing platform.

12. Zakopane

For those seeking adrenaline-pumping outdoor adventures, Zakopane is one of Poland's best destinations.

Located in the Tatra Mountains, the town is a popular base for skiing and snowboarding.

Zakopane is also a fantastic summer getaway. Here you can enjoy hiking, explore the vibrant arts scene, or zip down the gravity shuttle at Gubalowka Mountain (Gubałówka).

13. Bieszczady Mountains

The Bieszczady Mountains are another mountain range in southern Poland and part of the larger Carpathian Mountains, which extend into Slovakia, Ukraine, and beyond.

The mountains are unique for their alpine meadows, known as Polonises, which are found only in this region.

The hiking trails are suitable for beginners, so a visit in spring or summer is recommended to explore the beautiful surroundings.

14. National Park - Ojcow (Ojców)

Ojcow National Park lies off the beaten track for most foreign visitors to Poland, meaning you can discover its beauty undisturbed.

Ojcow National Park is small enough to explore in a day, yet it still offers plenty to see.

Don't miss the Eagle's Nest Trail, which connects dozens of castles within the park and winds through spectacular limestone landscapes. Visit the park in spring and summer, when hundreds of butterfly species inhabit it.

15. Zalipie

Poland remains a very rural country, so you can't say you've truly seen it without visiting one of its many picturesque villages.

One of the most beautiful places is Zalipie, a prime example of folk art.

All the houses in Zalipie are painted with colourful flowers by local women.

Take photos and visit the painters' house to learn more about these unskilled artists who often led hard lives yet still managed to beautify their homes.

16. Torun - Torn (Toruń)

Torn is one of Poland's lesser-known cities, which is a shame, as it's very popular with history buffs.

Thorn is not only one of Poland's oldest settlements (dating back to the 8th century), but also one of the few cities whose historical buildings are completely original and not replicas rebuilt after war and destruction.

Visitors to Torn should definitely stroll through the beautifully preserved Old Town, where centuries-old buildings stand side by side.

Visit the Gothic churches, many of which still house original paintings and sculptures. Science enthusiasts should also visit the museum dedicated to Copernicus, the city's most famous son.

Important Information

Here are a few things to keep in mind when preparing for your trip to Poland.

First, Poland has a turbulent recent history, and some topics are often sensitive.

Don't ask locals about life under communism if they don't want to talk about it. Don't refer to Poland as Eastern Europe, and certainly don't assume Poland is comparable to Russia.

Second, although Poland is a member of the European Union, it doesn't use the euro as its currency. Therefore, you should exchange money at a currency exchange or use an ATM.

Finally, familiarize yourself with the local laws before your trip.

Często dodaje się do nich majonez, czy chrzan. Jest bardzo wiele sałatek, które można przygotować na święta, każdy przygotowuje takie, które najbardziej mu smakują i które chce podać gościom na świątecznym stole.

Święta Wielkanocne, to także różnego rodzaju słodkie ciasta jak sernik. Można przygotować bardzo wiele różnych słodkich potraw, może być to na przykład kwestia regionu. Na Podlasiu popularną potrawą jest kołacz, wypiekany z ciasta drożdżowego, natomiast nadzienie to mak, biały ser lub dżem. Na Mazowszu z kolei popularny jest makowiec, którego nadzienie jest podobne do nadzienia kołacza, ale wierzch ciasta jest obsypany kruszonką. Na Dolnym Śląsku popularne jest danie o nazwie "Moczka". Jest to rodzaj deseru, który składa się z bułki pszennej, miodu i bakalii, zalewanego mlekiem. Barszcz biały z krokietami – to zupa, która w różnych formach jest często podawana na wielkanocnym stole. Barszcz przygotowuje się z warzyw, takich jak seler, pietruszka i por, oraz z dodatkiem białej kiełbasy i jajek. Krokiet jako dodatek, to natomiast bułka tarta z mięsem lub grzybami, która jest smażona na patelni.

Mazurek – to tradycyjna słodka potrawa wielkanocna, którą przygotowuje się ciasta, a następnie dekoruje kajmakiem, orzechami, bakaliami, marmoladą lub owocami, to oczywiście kwestia gustu kulinarnego. Mazurek na wiele smaków, w tym: czekoladowy, kokosowy, migdałowy czy cytrynowy.

Babka wielkanocna - to ciasto drożdżowe, które w Polsce jest nieodłącznym elementem wielkanocnego stołu. Zwykle jest to kakaowa babka z rodzynkami lub z waniliową polewą, ale może mieć różne smaki.

Wielkanoc – rodzinne święta

Wielkanoc to nie tylko czas na jedzenie pysznych potraw, ale również czas na spotkania z rodziną. Wielu Polaków skupia się na tym, aby właśnie podczas świąt zebrać rodzinę przy jednym stole. Tradycyjnie, na Wielkanoc, przygotowywana jest świąteczna wieczerza, ale nie można zapominać także o śniadaniu wielkanocnym. Wielkanoc to czas, w którym ludzie celebrują wiarę i skupiają się na rodzinnych tradycjach. Potrawy, które pojawiają się na wielkanocnym stole, są nieodłącznym elementem tych tradycji. Niezależnie od tego, jakie dania pojawią się na stole, najważniejsze jest to, aby ten czas spędzić w gronie najbliższych osób, które dzielą te same świąteczne wartości. Najczęściej padającym zwrotem podczas tego okresu jest „WESOŁYCH ŚWIĄT!”

Health benefits of coffee

In the coffee production process, the pulp is mechanically removed from the ripe coffee fruit, and the green seeds obtained in this way are dried and roasted. Roasting takes place at a temperature of 180 to 250 degrees C and lasts from two to twenty-five minutes, depending on the desired degree of roasting. Coffee roasting, as well as other thermal processing of food, leads to a change in the chemical composition of the product. There is also a process called the Maillard reaction. The products of this non-enzymatic reaction between simple sugars and amino acids are, for example, melanoidins, responsible for the browning of roasted beans.

However, in addition to the positive effects of coffee roasting, such as improving its taste and aroma, there are also unfavorable phenomena – molecules with potentially harmful properties are formed, such as acrylamide or 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF).

The health-promoting properties of coffee were studied by Dr. Eng. oanna Grzelczyk from the Institute of Food Technology and Analysis of the Lodz University of Technology, who, as part of a project funded by the National Science Centre, checked the health-promoting properties of coffee and how it is affected by the roasting process.

“I am a coffee lover, and I have always wondered if there is a grain of truth in the myths about coffee. Research on coffee absorbed me. The grant from the National Science Center allowed me to conduct interesting experiments and present the results at conferences, and to gain new cooperation, which resulted, among others, in a trip to internship to Canada at McGill University” – says Dr. Grzelczyk in an interview with the website Nauka w Polsce.

Coffee is a product rich in compounds from the group of polyphenols, which have a number of health-beneficial activities. They improve the functioning of the immune system, antimutagenic, neuro- and cardioprotective, antidiabetic. Roasting negatively affects the content of polyphenols in grains. hese compounds in the free form are characterized by greater biological activity than in the bound form.

Proven by a researcher from the Lodz University of Technology

As part of her research, Dr. Grzelczyk prepared extracts from arabica and robust coffee beans – from green beans as well as light and dark roasted ones, and then subjected them to in vitro digestion in an artificial digestive system. It turned out that the content of free polyphenols effectively increases during digestion, especially in the part of the system simulating the large intestine, and the presence of intestinal microorganisms has a positive effect on this process.

Dr. Grzelczyk conducted an analysis of the binding of substances contained in coffee extracts with receptors and enzymes. It proved that these extracts can inhibit the activity of e.g. monoamine oxidase A and regulate the activity of the PPARγ receptor. The first of these molecules is responsible for the breakdown of serotonin in the body, and its inhibitors are used as antidepressants. n particular, robust green coffee extract blocked the activity of monoamine oxidase A. Green coffee may therefore have potential antidepressant properties. The researcher adds that blocking monoamine oxidase activity also reduces the desire to eat carbohydrates.

The role of the PPARγ receptor is known in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. Dr. Grzelczyk’s research shows that the active substances contained in coffee extract, especially green coffee, can positively affect the insulin sensitivity of tissues, and thus have a preventive effect against type 2 diabetes. In roasted coffee, the content of these active substances decreases.

Dr. Grzelczyk also studied the influence of coffee on the development of neurodegenerative diseases. It proved that the tested coffee extracts have the potential to prevent them, because they inhibit the activity of certain enzymes and have a protective effect on model nerve cells. Coffee also counteracts the formation of beta-amyloid deposits that are associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Grzelczyk determined that all tested coffee extracts protect epithelial cells of the small intestine, i.e. enterocytes, against oxidative stress, which is conducive to carcinogenesis. Those from green coffee also protect the liver, and the higher the degree of roasting the beans – the weaker this effect was.

Although the researcher focused mainly on the health-promoting effects of drinking coffee – in coffee extracts, she also determined the content of acrylamide. This compound is formed during the processing of food products at high temperatures (e.g. roasting) and promotes the formation of gastrointestinal cancers. “There is more of it in lightly roasted coffee, and less in dark roasted coffee. However, these amounts are not such that daily consumption of coffee will cause cancer” – the researcher reassures.

Summarizing his research, Dr. Grzelczyk tells how – and what – to drink coffee to make the best use of its health-promoting potential: “green or dark roasted, at a temperature of up to 230 degrees C. Of course, without additives such as sugar.” And he emphasizes that green robust coffee contains more compounds beneficial to health than green arabica.

“People who tell me about the harmfulness of coffee, I repeat an important sentence: everything we consume, we must consume in moderation. Even excess water can be harmful” – the researcher says in an interview with Science in Poland.

We can consume 3 to 4 cups of coffee a day (a cup is about 150 ml) – he adds.
