Naming child characters after pre-existing characters (living or dead) always feels a bit unnatural to me, but it feels so prevalent in fiction and fandom

I don't know if it's just because it's easier to reuse names or a cultural difference so I'm curious to hear people's thoughts

#I think it's an important story telling device that needs to be used sparingly #if they are a junior they need to have an independent nickname that's unique #examples: my grandfather was the original name #my dad was a junior and went by his middle name #my brother is the third and he goes by a nickname derived from our last name #no one is getting them confused #this way it makes sense in a narrative #but it also gives foundation to something that's important #the idea of legacy #of sharing a name #whether that's an impossibly high standard #or trying to break away from a truly evil namesake #it can add layers and depth to characters

Nothing in this world will make Michael abandon Sam. Not their abusive father. Not Sam having an X-gene and discovering he’s a mutant. Not human society or laws that are designed to oppress mutants. He will do anything for his brother. If that means running away from home to Santa Carla, he’ll do it. Michael will find a safe harbor for Sam. Even if it means giving up his own humanity in the process. He’s not too upset. Humanity has never done much for him or his brother. David and the boys are offering a once in a lifetime opportunity. One he would be stupid to turn down.

Notes: Movie characterizations and descriptions. Some lore taken from the musical for additional background. I am not using Marvel’s rules on vampires, this is very much set in The Lost Boys movieverse. No X-men are showing up. There will be a couple of mutants later on, but all are minor characters being implemented to demonstrate the state of the world to understand Michael and Sam’s decisions.

Alternative summary: What if a pack of vampires adopt a mutant with solar powers that could nuke them instantaneously.

And 5 vampires, 2 half vampires ...

Honestly, that's a decent sized population to feed 5 vampires if they aren't eating a person each every single night.

wtf is the ‘ao3 curse’????

lol it's a meme, originated from how tough ao3 writers are, how ao3 writers will write through any challenging time in their lives.

their house being on fire? they still write fanfics

them just losing their job? they still write fanfics

them going through homelessness? they still write fanfics

them getting hit by a car? they still write fanfics

them being hospitalized? they still write fanfics

them having just given birth? they still write fanfics

them being put on trial? they still write fanfics

and the list goes on.

because these are the kind of life updates ao3 authors often share in author's notes section to give their audience a bit of an insight into what goes on in their lives or why the updates are being slowed down. sometimes you can literally see them being like "lol sorry for the slow updates guys. my house burnt down", and most of the times, it's not even a joke. they literally go through these challenging times in their lives and they are still writing fanfics, they are still prioritizing their fics and they still feel like they have to apologize to their readers for the lack of updates. they still try their absolute best to write through any challenges life throw at them.

thus it kind of becomes an inside joke within the community that it's an "ao3 curse" (difficult things happening to ao3 writers, but they still write their fanfics despite it all)

In all seriousness, the curse is a joke, but the amount of times I've updated in odd circumstances (i.e - hospitalization, insurance loss, worried about moving, loss of job, etc, etc.) certainly puts a point in the curse section

I have absolutely written fics while in the ER with an IV line in. Sounds wild, but it's the least distracted I have been sometimes. Forced to sit in a bed and do nothing while people try to treat me. I write when my mom is in the hospital. Same reason. There's nothing else to do and it's better than sitting there worried. Writing in an airport, on a plane, in a hotel for a funeral ... All these things are times when there's nothing constructive to do. And writing is a way better option than panicking.
