Like, okay, if your favorite creator makes a mildly sexist comment without intending to, or talks non-inclusively about gender or sexuality, this applies. People make mistakes. It will hurt people who notice it, who it pertains to, but it can be forgiven. Hurt was not intended. People need room to change and grow. That media is still enjoyable, and those creators should not be demonized. 

But if that gets regular? If the show is always heteronormative? If the show doesn’t pass the Bechtel test? If the offenses are clearly intentional? Or if worse offenses start to occur. If the show gets actively sexist. Gets actively homophobic. Gets cruel. Gets anti-semetic, or ableist or racist.

Then no? Actually, you shouldn’t enjoy that? What we consume affects how we think, and there’s so many things we consume that we can’t control, that when it comes to what we can pick, we should take the term “problematic” seriously. We believe what we see as humans, and if the really problematic, awful things become normalized in the media we consume, they’ll be normalized for us too. 

Sure, you can find issues with everything if you look hard enough. Of course you can. That’s how the world works. But saying “Everything’s problematic” and just grouping accidentally playing into gender roles with overt racism or fetishization of children (@ anime) can lead to really detrimental assumptions-that just because nothing can be perfect everything else is on the same level. Media can cause real harm. To real people. And it can make us more likely to deal harm to others as well.

Ok, so no one knows this, but the book the shack was one of two things that kept me from committing suicide when I was younger, and I FINALLY FINALLY got to watch it, so I’m going to review this beautiful piece of art.

First of all, THIS lady

Played GOD! Yes, the almighty himself, was a female, black women. Just like in the book :) And what I love about this besides diversity is in story, its about god giving Mack what he NEEDS rather than what he wants and is expecting. She knows he has daddy issues, and he has the old stereotypes in his head so what does she do? Make herself a WOMAN for his comfort, and makes it clear she loves ALL her children.

The best thing about this though is that hes easy going, and kind and humble, and he himself says hes not a christian and just “Wants everyone to know papas love through him”

Now, ignoring the individual characters, there were other things I liked about this movie.

1) It explained free will and a relationship with god perfectly

2) None of them were judgmental or hateful. The entire point of the movie was to teach Mack forgiveness

3) They were all loving and treated Mack like family, and were patient and catered to his needs

4) They still called him out on his crap though
