never forget the universal rule of the order of things: People Will Not Read It
signs at stores? émail? menu ?? instruction ? post online ? caption with andswer to question ? group hand outs ??? street sign ??? no. The Written Word Is The Enemy
#The number of compliments i have gotten for reading a thing
The ability to occasionally Read A Thing will make you a hero in your workplace, especially if it is for example an error message that tells you what you need to do differently, or instructions on unjamming a printer.
how dare you say we put jam in the printer
Ok reblogging this again because story time.
I work in tech, and much of what I do is support sales reps within the company by resolving errors with the software they use.
There is one sales rep who, every single time I send her a message or email with extremely specific instructions that will resolve her issue, does something completely different from what I tell her. Every time. Without fail. It is so glaringly obvious that she has never read even a single word that I have written to her.
So one day, she sends me a message that says little more than "(software) is broken, help"
So I do my standard song and dance of asking her what she's trying to accomplish, and what specifically is stopping her from doing that. And eventually, after much unnecessary back and forth, she tells me there's an error message. I ask her to send me a screenshot of the error message. She does.
The error message basically says, "these two required fields are blank. To resolve this, please fill in these two specific fields, and then click save."
So I take a few deep breaths.
Then I lie to her.
I message her back, saying "hey yeah, for some reason it's not loading that screenshot on my end. Could you type out the full text of the error message for me?"
She does.
I ask her if she still needs help.
She does not respond.
I have similar story from tech support.
Client is reporting that Some Thing Program doesn't work. I ask if there's an error message with further information about what's not working. Client says "no". I go over and ask Client to open Some Thing. Client double-clicks on the icon for Some Thing, it starts to boot, an error message dialog flashes up on screen, Client closes error message before I can read it, Thing closes after the error.
"What did that error message say?" I ask.
"What error message?" asks Client.
I tell Client to open the Some Thing again and then not click anything else. Client opens Some Thing, error message appears, Client clicks it away again.
I tell Client to stand up, step away, and give me physical control of the computer. I open Some Thing, start looking at the error message without closing it, and Client says "You should close that." I tell Client that I am reading the error message. Client is apparently accustomed to treating error messages as a kind of spam email that should be deleted as fast as possible, and gets agitated that I'm reading it.
I read the error message. It tells me what the problem is. I fix the problem. Some Thing works now.
---
Later, I start thinking about how such an error message might perhaps be engineered to be more attention-grabbing and close-resistant as a way of making people read it. It's not important for some random program here, but there are more important systems (medical, etc) where it would be reasonable to demand the user's attention because people's lives depend on paying attention to the error message.
But then people with a perverted intellect would still be thinking about ways to avoid reading the message, like dragging it off edge of screen or hiding it behind another window. So maybe the dialog box could have an always-in-front feature to override other windows, and the alert could use the computer's hardware "beep" functionality that can't be switched off by muting the regular sound system, and keep beeping... shit, I realize I'm reinventing pain, and get philosophical about it.
Story from The Past about My Mum:
She was a computer programmer / analyst, a... Long Time Ago. Called in for a system she'd installed before, the office folk said they kept having problems where it Didn't Work Right (no error, a malfunction)
She investigated, and told them that could only happen if they did 3 specific things in a specific order, which they should not ever do.
So, she asked, did they ever do that?
No! Of course not, was the answer.
So she made a couple of small changes, packed up and said that should be fine, but they should call her if there were problems.
The next week
She had a call saying "We're getting a strange error message on the system, can you help?"
She said, of course, can they tell her the error?
And the message was:
"You Said You Didn't Do This"
So anyways the Pokecology book is really good you guys

SAM AND DEAN IN 7.18 PARTY ON, GARTH
IT’S MARCH

It’s august
Fenton Assassin 9/?

Five days. It had been five days since anyone had seen Red Hood. Bruce put on his suit while thinking of his wayward son. He had to find Jason and deprogram any brainwashing the League had done. He put on his gauntlets. Bruce knew it would be hard, and he was being biased. With all the people Jason killed, he deserved to be in jail or Arkham. Bruce couldn’t do it. He put on his cowl.
His son would come home.
____
Crime Alley was in chaos.
He had tried to stop both the literal and metaphorical fires, but the Alley didn’t trust Batman. Batman couldn’t help but wonder why Jason hadn’t come out to settle it. After all, it was the perfect time to take complete control of Crime Alley and establish his own brand of vengeance. He couldn’t help but worry. What if he was hurt and unable to stop the chaos caused?
Batman stopped a group of men from ransacking a small electronics store. He left them tied up on a light pole. There were a few times he noticed small groups of men and women—Red Hood’s men and women—trying to stop people from adding to the Alley’s chaos, but there was only so much they could do.
Watching this, Batman thought of what would happen when Bruce took Jason back to the Manor. The Alley would go through a lot of bloodshed without the Red Hood around. Hmm. He would have to devise plans to keep the Alley safe while he rehabilitated Jason. Maybe he could bribe Nightwing into staying a while longer. He could add Crime Alley to his patrol route and have Nightwing patrol the area.
Maybe he could have Robin come back home for a little while…Then again, if Jason was going to be around, well, he didn’t want Tim exposed to a murderer, son or no. Plus, he didn’t know how Jason would react to Tim’s presence.
No, only Nightwing.
Maybe he could have Jason give him ideas for keeping the Alley safe. As long as those ideas didn’t involve murder.
A shout of pain. A gunshot going off.
Batman followed the sound to an alley and found a familiar figure standing over a dead man’s body.
Red Hood was back.
Batman didn’t ignore Jason, but he quickly took in the scene. There was a woman, a prostitute, with disheveled, skimpy clothes. Her eyes were wide in fear, and she trembled. The fallen man had his zipper down, and a gun loosely clutched in his hand.
It didn’t take a genius to figure out what Red Hood had stopped.
Red Hood ignored Batman and crouched down. He took off his helmet and whispered soothingly to the woman. He helped her trembling frame up and gave her a wad of cash.
“Go home. Don’t come out until this is over.”
The woman took the cash and ran out of the alley, sparing a glance at Batman as she left them behind.
Jason turned and smirked at Batman.
“What’s the matter, old man? You look worried.”
“Where have you been? Are you hurt?”
Jason’s smirk fell.
“Why do you care? You have no right to question me.”
“Jason.” He stopped. Jason had a gun pointing at him. God, how he hated guns, and here his son was pointing one at him.
“Don’t even think about it, Bruce. I won’t hesitate to shoot you.”
“Jason, come home.”
“Fuck off. Crime Alley needs me after the time you’ve neglected it. It deserves its savior. Even if it means that I have to cleanse it with blood.”
“We don’t kill, Jason.”
Jason snorted and started laughing.
“No, you don’t kill, you coward. I’m doing what has to be done. I’m taking out the evil from its roots.” He said while kicking the dead body on the floor.
“You’re a crime lord. How is that being a savior?”
“Yes! I’m a crime lord! That’s what you don’t understand. You can’t stop crime; you can only control it.”
Batman took a step toward Jason. A shot rang out, hitting Batman right on his bat sigil.
“The next one will be somewhere lethal.”
“What has Talia done to you?”
“Don’t you dare. Talia has been there for me from the beginning. She opened my eyes.”
“She brainwashed you!”
Jason let loose a volley of bullets. Batman didn’t stay to let the hail of bullets hit him and dodged behind a trash can. When he looked up, Jason was gone. Some instinct had him looking up. Jason stared at him from the roof; he put on his helmet and ran away.
Batman couldn’t lose him, not again. He used his grappling gun to reach the roof and chased Jason. Jason led him through a merry chase, throwing ninja stars and shooting Batman along the way. Neither seemed to be able to get the upper hand.
Suddenly, Jason stopped. He took off his helmet and threw it at Bruce. Bruce jumped to the side as soon as the helmet exploded. Bruce felt sick. Had Jason really been carrying a bomb on his head? Before Bruce could really think about it, Jason turned and threw a punch.
Batman dodged and threw one himself, hoping to knock Jason unconscious. He felt a bit of pride when his son dodged it and kicked him. The kick left him rattled. Jason turned his back and was about to run when Batman threw a bola at Jason’s feet. He fell face-first.
That didn’t stop him from throwing a smoke bomb at Batman’s feet. Batman didn’t hesitate; he ran up to Jason before he could cut the rope. He slapped Jason’s ears at full strength to disorient the boy and then punched his chin.
Jason didn’t go down. Instead, he punched Batman on the groin. Either he forgot that Batman had that area under protection, or it was a desperate attempt to gain his freedom.
“Stop fighting me, Jason. We’re going home.”
“Never!”
Jason struggled as Batman tried to handcuff him. He didn’t want to do it, but he had to. Bruce took out his taser and hit Jason right on the neck. Jason’s eyes widened behind his mask.
“Bitch,” he said and then promptly passed out. Batman got Jason before he hit the floor. He couldn’t help but run his hand through Jason’s soft hair. Then he took hold of a white streak and frowned, not liking the reminder that his son had suffered. He took Jason into his arms, his soft breaths a miracle.
The last time he had held Jason, his lungs had stopped, his body turning cold. Bruce looked at the smoke rising in Crime Alley.
He knew that Jason wouldn’t forgive him for leaving Crime Alley in shambles, but dammit, Bruce just wanted his son home. He called for the Batmobile and left the roof with his son in his arms.
He didn’t go in the front and let the car drive itself back to the cave. Bruce’s hold on Jason tightened. The sun’s rays were just starting to peek through the horizon. Bruce couldn’t help but smile; he was going home with his son in his arms.

Jason showed up a few minutes after the others had left Vlad and Bruce alone. He couldn’t help but glare. Danny looked up at him and smirked at Jason’s expression. Great, the kid still wasn’t scared of him. Although, if the kid really had died as he claimed, it would make sense he wasn’t scared of much, let alone Jason’s glare.
Still, Jason made the effort to smooth his face out. After all, he wanted to find out more about Vlad, and the kid was a perfect place to start.
“So, how do you know Vlad Masters?” Dick asked. It seemed he wasn’t the only one who wanted answers.
Danny was staring at a painting, shuddered, and turned to Dick.
“My parents went to university with him. They studied the same thing, Ectobiology.”
“What’s Ectobiology? Sounds weird.” Steph said.
Tim elbowed her. She glared at him while rubbing her arm.
“What, it’s a legit question.”
Danny laughed, good-naturedly, “No, it is weird. It’s the study of ecto entities and ectoplasm.”
“What in the hell is an ecto entity?” Steph asked while poking Tim.
“Ha ha, it’s just a fancy way to say ghosts,” Danny said while rubbing the back of his neck, looking embarrassed.
“Your parents study ghosts? Are they ghost hunters?”
Danny didn’t look uncomfortable, but Jason could tell he didn’t want to answer Steph. Interesting. He looked comfortable enough telling Jason things before.
“So, you’re all Mr. Wayne’s children?”
“Not me,” Steph answered. “I’m a family friend. Duke here is a foster son,” Duke waved. “The rest of them are adopted, except for the brat there.”
“Tt.”
“Huh,” Danny hummed.
“So, your parents knew Mr. Masters before he became a billionaire?” Dick went back to interrogating Danny.
“Hmm, I guess? I only knew him after, though. We went to a school reunion, and they reconnected.”
“He must be a suave businessman to become so rich from basically nothing.”
“I suppose. I don’t know much about his businesses. I know he makes weapons for ghost hunters, but that’s about it.”
“There are weapons for ghosts?”
“Sure. Look it up. Who’s that?” Danny asked, suddenly pointing at a painting of Thomas Wayne.
Dick looked at Jason, and Jason nodded.
“That’s, uh, Bruce’s dad, Thomas Wayne.”
Danny stared at the painting. His eyes darted to the left of him, where there was no one, then back to the painting. Jason couldn’t help but stare at the empty space Danny had looked at. Was it just his imagination, or was the air shimmering? Jason looked back at the painting of what was technically his grandfather. Danny had died; Jason knew he had powers. Seeing the dead couldn’t be one of them…could it? Was Thomas Wayne…?
“So, what do you guys do for fun around here? My friend has a basement with a bowling alley and video games. What do you guys have in your basement?” he asked with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
Dick shifted subtly, uncomfortable with the question.
“We have a gaming room, if that’s what you’re asking,” Tim answered.
“Cool! What games do you have?”
Tim and Danny walked away from the group. The others stared at each other before following the two. Dick and Jason were the only ones who stayed behind.
“He knows we’re trying to get answers out of him. He keeps deflecting and giving non-answers to the questions.” Dick whispered.
“He’s a smart kid.”
“There’s no way he doesn’t know what’s going on. He’s Masters’ heir.”
“Yeah,” Jason said. He stared at Danny’s back. The kid’s posture was relaxed. He laughed at something Tim said, then said something that made Tim smile. The two seemed to be hitting it off; Jason knew Tim was trying to get Danny’s guard down so he could subtly ask questions. Jason didn’t know why, but he thought it wouldn’t work.
____
The Joker laughed as his cell door opened. One of the guards was dead while the other one let him out.
So, Jason had decided to come back from the dead. Well, mommy was disappointed he wasn’t consulted about it. After all, he had made the Red Hood, Jason Todd, what he was. It was time to remind the boy who he was and where he came from.
“C’mon, let’s go have fun.”
____
Danny paused suddenly as they entered the gaming room. His eyes grew huge, and he looked to his left.
A lot of people didn’t know, but ghosts loved to gossip. Thomas Wayne had not shut his mouth since he figured out Danny could see him. Now, he was ranting and raving about how the Clown was back out, and he was a danger to his grandchildren. He was begging Danny to stop the Clown before he got to his son and grandbabies again.
“What’s wrong?” Jason asked.
Danny looked up at the man.
“Please,” Thomas begged, “He already killed Jason once. My son can’t kill him, can’t stop him the way he should be stopped. Please, stop him before he hurts them again.”
“Nothing,” Danny said. “I suddenly remembered something I had to tell Vlad. Can you show me the way back?”
Danny couldn’t be one hundred percent sure, but he was positive ‘the Clown’ was the infamous Joker. If he was the reason for Jason’s death, well, Vlad would be interested to know.
“Sure, kid, I can show you the way. You guys stay here; we’ll be right back.”
Jason took Danny’s arm and pulled him away from his siblings. The rest of them stared as they left. Danny didn’t say anything and tried to keep up with Jason. He ran into the man when he stopped abruptly.
“What’s going on?” Jason asked.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
Jason looked at Danny, scowling.
“You’ve been acting weird. More so than usual. Tell me what’s going on, or I’ll bring Bruce and everyone else into this.”
“You can’t.” Thomas whispered, “He’ll go after the Clown himself and get hurt.”
“Can’t. It’s between Vlad and me.”
“Well, I’m his son; I think I deserve to know what Daddy Dearest does, don’t you?”
Danny stuck out his chin, defiant.
“No, actually, you don’t.”
“Yesterday, you were okay with spilling secrets. Today, you’re being squirrely. Tell me what’s going on, now!”
“No.”
“Okay, you can find Vlad yourself.”
Jason walked away. Danny didn’t care. He followed Thomas Wayne’s ghost. Danny had to warn Vlad. He couldn’t let anything bad happen to Jason Todd. Danny knew that Vlad would lose it if he lost his son a second time.

Bruce threw the phone. The echoing shatter was loud in the cave.
Talia had refused to give him answers. She had given only frustratingly vague answers. It pissed him off to no end. Bruce looked at the footage of the fight between Jason and the woman—Red Phantom—who was beside him. The weapons were League; everything screamed League of Assassins.
Talia, maybe even Ra’s, had had Jason for who knows how long and had refused to tell Bruce. He had been mourning his son while the League had turned him into a deadly weapon with no qualms about killing.
Why, though? Why had the League stolen Jason’s body? How had they brought him back? How had a similar yet different coffin ended up in his son’s grave? Where was the original coffin? And who was the mysterious woman that was following Jason around? What did she want with his son?
The questions kept circling with no answers.
Bruce stared at the footage once more, trying to find clues. Jason’s words suddenly rang in his head.
“You’re obsolete, now.” Jason had said.
“The son has not surpassed the father.”
Bruce stared in the middle distance as a sentence he regretted ever uttering played in his head.
“I’m not your father, Jason. I don’t need your teenage rebellion.”
Bruce let his face fall into his hands.
“Jason, my son. I’ll bring you home and help you.”
____
“You guys need to go do what you have to do. I’ll be fine,” Danny said, watching the news. Five days after Black Mask’s death, Crime Alley was in chaos. Batman had shown up a few times the night before, but even he couldn’t do much when the people of Crime Alley didn’t trust him, and all-out war had taken over the streets. Jason’s lieutenants had tried to put out fires while Jason commanded them by phone. It wasn’t the same as having Red Hood in person.
While all that happened, the people of Crime Alley were clamoring for Red Hood to come and save them.
Jason had to ignore the cries.
Mostly because Jason didn’t want to leave Danny—and by extension, Jazz—behind; he had seen the kid have a breakdown just the night before. However, he was responsible for the chaos that had hit the streets, and as such, he needed to restore order.
“Jazz, stay with Danny. I’ll go out tonight to fix this.”
“No, you can’t go out there alone. At least ask for League help. Talia would be more than happy to lend you a few agents.”
“Talia has her hands full with getting the League in order for her to have to worry about Gotham. Besides, I don’t want her thinking I can’t handle this.”
“Hell, at least hire some mercenaries; I’d rather that than have you go alone!”
Jason said nothing. Danny’s eyes were ping-ponging back and forth between the two.
“Guys, seriously, go. I can take care of myself. Besides, there’s enough ectoplasm here that I can heal. I don’t need a babysitter; I’m sixteen years old!”
“Danny, you just healed. You need to have someone beside you in case something happens.”
“I’ll be fine, Jazz. The GIW are gone. There’s very little that can threaten me, even in my weakened state.”
Jazz bit her bottom lip. Jason knew she didn’t want to leave Danny alone but was also afraid of letting Jason go without backup. Jason smiled softly; if only he had that support from Dick when he was younger. How different would things have turned out if Dick had had his back from the beginning?
He went up to Jazz and kissed her softly.
“Stay. Danny needs you more than I do. If I need help, I’ll call.”
Danny was looking at his feet.
“It’s not your fault, Danny. Besides, I’m a big boy; I can take care of myself.”
“I feel bad. You’re gonna be alone in that,” Danny pointed toward the TV showing the riots and looting Crime Alley was going through without Jason.
Jason stared out the window. He heard sirens and gunshots throughout his territory.
“I won’t be alone. I have my lieutenants with me.”
“Sure, a bunch of low-level henchmen will definitely keep you safe,” Danny said sarcastically while rolling his eyes.
Jason smiled.
“Why, Danny, it almost sounds like you care about me.”
Danny crossed his arms. “Jazz seems to like you, and you seem like a decent guy for her. I would hate to see her sad if anything happened to you.”
Jazz smiled at Danny and then pinched his cheek.
“Hey! Stop that!”
Jason laughed at the scene and then grew serious.
“I can handle it. You stay with your sister, have dinner, watch a movie. I’ll be back by morning.”
____
Jazz watched uneasily as Jason jumped out the window in full Red Hood gear.
“Cool,” Danny whispered at Jason’s display.
Jazz smiled and ruffled her baby brother’s hair. She still couldn’t believe he was in front of her again, considering he had been nothing more than an ice-cold core. She had a feeling that if they hadn’t been in Gotham and its ambient ectoplasm, Danny would still be in the thermos.
“Jason has died before, hasn’t he?” Danny asked suddenly.
Jazz looked at her brother.
“Yeah,” she answered. There was no point in lying. “Though that’s his story to tell.”
Danny nodded. “I won’t pry.”
“I’m sure Jason will appreciate that.”
Danny smirked.
“Please, the dead know better than to ask about another person’s death.”
“He cares for you, right? He would never treat you badly?”
Jazz stared at her Danny’s serious face. He was still pale and swaying a little. He was still as fierce as always.
“Jason and I have been through a lot together. I love him, and he loves me. Besides,” she smirked, “I will kick his ass if he ever gets out of line.”
“You better.”
Jazz put her arm around Danny’s shoulder and drew him closer to her. Outside, the city was in chaos, but with Jason and her brother by her side, Jazz knew she could deal with anything.
