World Heritage Post
Obligatory Buck Bokai analysis post
In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "If Wishes Were Horses", we (sort of) meet Buck Bokai of the London Kings, the last great baseball player. In many ways, Star Trek's vision of baseball's future hasn't borne out. Bokai is said to have broken Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak in 2026, but it remains one of baseball's ultimate records; no one has come close to challenging it this century. There is no Planetary Baseball League (and one less Canadian team in Major League Baseball), though there is a World Baseball Classic. And, while no one can say what 2042 holds, the sport remains incredibly popular.
But "If Wishes Were Horses" proved extremely prescient in one sense. When the episode aired in 1993, MLB had yet to see a superstar Asian player. It wasn't until 1956, nine years after Jackie Robinson ended MLB's informal ban on Black players, that an Asian American, Bobby Balcena, even took the field for any of the league's teams. But the floodgates were soon to open. In 1995, Hideo Nomo, already an established pitcher in Nippon Professional Baseball, signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and became an instant sensation. Today, Asian MLB players, especially those who got their start in NPB, are no longer unusual, and many have distinguished themselves. Ichiro Suzuki, who broke the 84-year record for most hits in a season, became the first Asian elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame last year. Nobody doubts that Shohei Ohtani, MLB's first standout two-way player in a century, will one day join him. One goofy DS9 episode about the power of imagination didn't will their careers into existence, but Buck Bokai certainly is in keeping with Trek's knack for envisioning a multiracial future.
Ohtani, by the way, is the name of an unseen athletic trainer in Starfleet Academy. If Shohei played for the San Francisco Giants instead of the Dodgers, he'd probably have been on one of the shows himself by now. Fiction becomes reality, reality becomes fiction, and so on into infinity.
pretty pretty please i don’t want to be a tomodachi
the fact that the new tomodachi is SO DIVERSE in its character creation that you can make ALL OF THESE CHARACTERS and have them be SO ACCURATE to their actual designs (yes im counting hoshi as accurate despite not being a literal star-shaped star-angel-gooberino) makes me SO HAPPY
UPDATE:
The other day I was surfing the internet and I found this specialized painting colour wheel, it shows how real paint colours relate to each other.
Outside: the purest/brightest colours from the tube.
Inside: naturally muted or earthy colors, like browns and ochres.
The Center: dark neutral tones used for mixing shadows.
The Lines: two equilateral triangles. One shows the triad of primary colors, and the other shows the triad of secondary colors. Triads are traditionally used to create vibrant yet perfectly balanced compositions.
Complementary colors: are those located directly opposite each other on the wheel.
Shadows I:
If you want to achieve rich, dark neutrals, the standard rule is to mix a color with its direct complementary (opposite) tone. However, doing this can often make your shadows look flat or muddy.
Instead of using the exact complementary color, the real trick is to use one of the colors right next to it (either to the left or the right). By doing this, you avoid a dull mix and introduce a beautiful, subtle color bias into your shadow, keeping it clean and full of life. You can see an example of this in the second image.
I want to share this with you because I think it is really illustrative!

hey I’m sorry about your boyfriend. yeah no, he was only in the movie long enough to deliver some crucial exposition and then die. also? this part is embarrassing but he was killed by the gorilla. honestly you kind of had to be there, it’s not as weird as it sounds. I’m sorry though. I know I promised that nobody was going to get killed by the gorilla and that’s like, the very first thing that happened, so I get why you’re mad.
this post also describes Bruce Campbell’s role in Congo (1995)

this post doesn't specifically describe any character in King Kong (2005), but it has the vibe of something that version of Carl Denham would say
hey I’m sorry about your brother. yeah no, he was only in the movie long enough to appear in a few action sequences and one reaction shot and then die. also? this part is embarrassing but he was killed by the monsters on Skull Island. honestly you kind of had to be there, it’s not as weird as it sounds.
