Gay flag but it’s colorpicked from footage of Björk beating up a journalist that’s been following her for 4 days during her arrival in Bangkok, 1996
remember kids, the moral of "Irish and Italians weren't even considered White yet!" isn't "because in those times people were so ignorant they didn't think the Irish were white". the moral is "because white is an unreal category created to justify slavery and ongoing hoarding of power and wealth". It's not that you know better about Italians. It's that the boundaries of the higher caste have changed.
Further, these groups assimilated into whiteness by 1) participating in racism, particularly anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and 2) they abandoned a lot of cultural practices and beliefs from their home countries.

it really frustrates me to think about how people are inevitably going to take Remmick’s one (1) singular statement about how much he resents the way the Irish were colonized and forcibly converted to Christianity and use it as fuel for “actually he had a point” and “he was right actually” and “he’s not really the villain here” posts, when the whole point is that Remmick is, through the vampiric hive mind he’s creating, forcibly assimilating people into yet another manipulative and parasitical system. he doesn't value the cultures of the people he assimilates—notice how all the vampires he turns dance to his culture's music using his culture's dances, and how he only uses the languages or knowledge other vampires have to offer when he needs to manipulate someone. Remmick is extremely transparent about the way he sees the people he turns as resources to exploit.
he’s perpetuating a cycle that he claims to hate and resent, and I think the movie is pretty damn clear about the fact that he doesn’t see anybody as valuable or useful to him except as prey and as pawns—otherwise he would just, you know, focus solely on people who actually consent to being turned. but he looked sad in that one scene and he’s an apparently attractive white cis man so people are gonna bend over backwards justifying all the harm he did.

That was the last sunrise I ever saw. Perhaps the kindest thing the dark gift has given me. // It was the last time I saw my brother. It was the last time I saw the sun. It was the only time I ever felt free.

it broke today that biden airdropped aid to gaza. other than the fact that this is an obvious pr move ahead of his re-election campaign, i think it's important to stress how ineffective this method is compared to just allowing humanitarian aid to come through. airdrops carry far less aid than truck convoys, for one, and require an airdrop zone with a lot of idealistic conditions that don't often coincide. this is a major reason why you hear a lot of airdrops being conducted at beaches--and why a lot of them have been blown to the sea. and what's even more dangerous about that is that a lot of these palestinians are malnourished, starving, in a delirious state of mind. many of them are so utterly hungry that they'd be willing to swim through just to get their hands on a sodden meal. but apparently this is the best thing the us, which literally funds israel's ongoing genocide, can do for palestinians at the moment.
i think the biggest reason i find this so insidious is because it implies the us has to play by israel's rules, even though it's basically already confirmed that there are us soldiers in palestine. the us is telling us that the best thing it can do is airdrop aid, rather than strongarm israel into allowing ground-delievred aid to come through. the us is acting like it has red tape it has to contend with.
but the us is the red tape. the us literally holds the power. it knows what it's doing. it's actually jarring watching the united states government try to infantilize itself.
why do I see people acting like Aaron Bushnell's self-immolation in protest is particularly disturbing? I know we have all seen nearly limitless physical violence inflicted on Gazan people's bodies and none of that at any point appeared to generate this level of absolute handwringing theatrics. This is not a good look for many people.
PhDs in missing the point here
some of you are so fucking stupid you reverse the very logic this man tried to demonstrate with his very sacrifice. "People only care because it's some white guy" show some goddamn respect. By "handwringing theatrics" I mean the backflips people are doing to tag his protest and slap it with 12 thousand "trigger warnings" and waxing about suicide. You are doing consent manufacturing suppression for the feds for free. You are feeding the chosen narrative of mental illness whether you want to or not, and you are doing it completely unpaid. "It's so horrific, don't watch" no please do. He was an extremely courageous young man. And the fact it particularly disturbs YOU is the point.

idk to me it’s just like,,,black people coined the phrases say her name and rest in power for a reason and im gonna focus specifically on say her name because it was black women who wanted to call attention to the systemic violences that we have faced that have resulted in the deaths of so many of us which were left unrecognized. it was specifically addressing an issue within the black community wherein black femicides (particularly at the hands of the police/intimate partners) were not given the same spotlight as the murders of black men. we are always forgotten in life and in death and that is part of why the violence against us has been permitted to continue to the point that we are at a significantly higher risk of homicide than any other race. and the statistics are even more grim for black transwomen and femmes. for every nonblack victim of transphobic violence that gets recognition in their horrific death, there are 10 black victims whose names we never know. like that is the whole point of the phrase this shit is life or death for us and we know that the moment race is decontextualized from the nature of the phrase then that is when we are once again forgotten. but yall are acting like we’re trying to start genz tiktok lingo/aave co-opting discourse.
what im essentially trying to say is that say her name isn’t aave or slang or “just something black people say” it was a very intentionally crafted call to action that was made with a specific purpose - that being to highlight black women as being disproportionately vulnerable to violence yet overwhelmingly overlooked. and i think the reason why a lot of yall are mad when we say to pick a diff phrase is bc yall think of it as internet slang and not an actual movement largely driven by social media a la #blacklivesmatter
and to reiterate the selection of “her” was done with the intention of calling attention to the state-sponsored (whether by law enforcement or deputized citizen) murder of Black women that would often go overlooked by even activists taking part in Black Lives Matter organizing points, protests and rallying cries. Her was also selected with the foresight that those who chose to ignore the state sponsored murders of Black women would continue to do so, no matter how overwhelming the evidence or organizing. The first co-opt and misuse of “Say Her Name” wasn’t even by nonblacks but by Black misogynoirist (or misinformed) actors using it for Black victims of state sponsored death in deviations of “say his name” or in gender neutral compiled lists of Black victims under “say their names”. This is why Black women and the few who ACTUALLY LISTENED have been tired of this convo, the conversation abt misogynoir has been predictably obfuscated by misogynoir.
