I feel the reason that we think we might is because, in the back of our minds, we know that the love target in question is unreachable. We know that we can’t actually ever date a fictional character, and that it is highly unlikely we’ll ever date a celebrity we’ll never meet. It’s the same situation when lesbians say they question their sexuality because of fictional men. Key word, FICTIONAL. Meaning not real. Sometimes it’s not easy imagining “oh but if this character were real or if I met this celebrity”... because we know it won’t happen.

I used to think I couldn’t be aro because I used to fantasize about romance, but looking back on it, it wasn’t actually me that was involved in those fantasies. It was some alternate version of me that I can’t be in this reality. Every time I, the actual me, am approached with romance, I personally can’t take it.

This could be because of amatormativity; we’re so desperate to “fit in” that we try to force ourselves into (usually heteronormative) romance, but only in a way that our minds feel comfortable doing so, which is imagining a situation that is impossible to happen, whether it be involving a fictional character, an unreachable celebrity, or an alternate version of ourselves...

Yet interestingly enough, this seems to happen to allocishets too; they tend to crush on people they know they have no chance with, usually at an age or a time in life where they know in the back of their head that they aren’t ready to handle romance, because let’s be fair... handling something as big as that is a lot easier said than done.

Idk. Crushes are weird. Attraction is weird. And I think it is totally possible to get crushes on unreachable people. But if you consider yourself aromantic or arospec and think you might feel attraction towards those unreachable people, everything above might be the reason why.
