Can I just say I adore your work and look forward to seeing you post? Hzshs Okay, so my main question is what would you recommend someone who's trying to learn about layout and background painting, do, to see consistent improvement? What are key things one should be aiming for? Sorry if this doesn't make sense. 🙈
Hi there ! thank you ! :) I would say, you need to work/draw/practive with intentions. You need to know what specific skill you are trying to improve each time you start a drawing session. For Layout and background painting, you need many different skills so it's good to have a list :
Perspective Composition Color theory Light theory Shape design Architecture design Line work/brushwork
when you do a piece of art ask yourself : what am I working on today ? you can do multiple at once of course ! And when you feel that you are not achieving what you want, try to pinpoint which skill is lacking, and look for ressources about that specific one ! Always surround yourself with REFERENCES, you can't draw everything from imagination, you absolutely need to study the world !! and don't limit to pinterest and google images, find books and go outside !
You need VARIETY in order to get better, there is nothing worth than a creative brain getting bored because you are doing the same exercizes over and over.
Studies, life drawings, plein air, are good when you don't have inspirations and you want a base to build from. Personnal illustration help you develop a personnal style, a langage, explore with your skill, have fun, be an artist.
Failures are OK and normal, just keep drawing, the more you draw the less you will care about doing something less good. Every drawing, every sketch, every painting, is a lesson. You may not feel it while you do it, but in the long run you will !!
Don't trap yourself in a single method !! Try new ways to work, do the things that feels good to YOU. If you copy an artist method and it does not work for you, it can feel very discouraging ! But it's not because you are not made for this, it's because the method was not made for you : find your own ! That is the most I can say through text ! Hope it helps ! Good luck
did you also read te the other work of Ursula ? I am thinking about the more science fiction one, I do love some of them.
I have read the left hand of the night but Im currently at the end of Annals of the Western Shore and I looooove when Ursula writes fantasy so much, maybe a bit more than her sci fi work, but I do need to dive into it more to have a full opinion ! If you have any recommendations !!
paitings to exercize, Im trying find a brushwork that feels more like mine, always aiming for a very "traditionnal" look, between gouache and watercolors
color sketch ended up having a zelda vibe

a little painting to start the summer !
Hi hello I have a new obsession here !
2025 is over ! It was a very stable and clam year for me :)
I decide to chill with art and progression, try things, learn things, fail at things, and... I liked it ! I think I didn't created my most exciting pieces of art this year, but all of them felt "deliberate", I always had a clear goal in mind doing them ! I tried to get better at rendering, and values, and composition, and characters which overall, I think I achieved to my liking. I also "tried" stuff, even if for now, it is still quite shy, I went in different directions, without focusing to much on style or identity ? I just wanted to explore ? and not worry too much about a brand or anything.
Which overall, gives a pretty incoherent look to this recap, but I see art has having moments of chaos and moments of order, Im very much in a chaos episode, and I think we should not fight against it, just embrace it, and create whatever comes, I trust it will all makes sense in the future !
After leaving 2024, I felt discouraged about my work, I had the feeling something was lost, and I didn't know what, or how to reclaim it. I think 2025 gave me that thing back, I hope in 2026 I get to create more and have fun !
Thanks to everyone here who commented & shared :) reposting on tumblr this last couple of years has been a blast ! I wish a happy 2026 to all !
Halloween's been over for 2 months ? don't care personnally. I made some brushes to help me painting intricate architectural details with minimum effort, and at first this painting was just to try them out but I got carried away... I didn't planned anything here, just pure experimentation, testing things out, having fun, intuitively building details in, I really enjoy working a bit mindlessly like that. would love to dive more into dark fantasy aesthetic, been drawing that a lot, I need to world build a bit more I think !
Can you spot the little witch looking over the city ?
yipeeee
I forgot one of my armored woman, reopened the file and finished the illus this week before going back to work LOL

stuff Im working on... very hard to define a style for characters... going from very loose to very controled... I should find a balance
for the 3 people in the back who thought I had painted a white Ged (forgot how this website can be sometimes...) here is a reminder on how light works. Yes I know Ged is brown skin, yes I have read the version with Leguin's introduction texts where she talks extensively about earthsea's charactershave been whitewashed, I have read her blog and how deceived she was with the movie adaptations. I understand how this topic on representation is important and sensitive but please learn to read an image before jumping to conclusions. will probably delete this in a week or 2
Im so happy to see people talk about earthsea or recognizing that it was fanart even before reading the caption !! these books are so precious to me and my friends, I really hope I get to share more art like this and create a little community around earthsea even !!
I read the books while I was in Japan last year, right after finishing Lords of The Rings (loved it too) and I think it made it clear in my head that fantasy was my favorite genre of media and I really want more of it out there ! i had a ton of images coming to my mind during the reading, but I couldn't draw at the time, but when I got home... I finally got to it ! so happy about the results ! A few more Ged and Lookfar art is coming !
hello!!! i adored your earthsea art the colours are so lush!! I was wondering, did you make any art of the tombs of atuan or the left hand of darkness (not earthsea but I love it so much!!)? No worries if not ofc just curious! Thank for sharing your work <3
hey there ! thank u so much !! I haven't yet for the tombs of atuan but Im planning to ! Im listening to the audiobook of the wizard of earthsea as I paint, to have more precise memories of the scenes (I read the saga last summer) and Tenar is my favorite character by far so I intend to draw her as much as possible !! I also have vivid ideas of what I imagine the temple and the labyrinth to look like... I have read the left hand but I think Im less drawn to sci fi aesthetic ..at least at the moment !
take care ( ˶˘ ³˘)♡
