on yue qingyuan and desire:

to desire, but not acknowledge it. to desire, but not allow yourself to feel it. to desire, but to ignore it. to desire, but to avoid it. to desire, but prioritize other’s desires above your own. to desire, but forgetting what desire even looks like. to desire, but remembering what your impulsivity has already wrought. to desire, but above all else: to deny.

desires are meant to be denied, after all. it’s the most quintessential teaching from your shizun. if you deny your desires, you will gain strength. power. control.

(you will stop looking at yourself in reflections, unable to acknowledge the living weapon that you’ve become. the xuan su sword does not feel regret that it is powerful. it’s sole purpose is to be useful. to be used—

—used, like you always have been. used, like you always will be. used, and yet never useful when you most need to be. you still remember how your vision blurred when you looked upon the charred remains of the qiu estate. how wooden splinters embedded into your fingers as you mindlessly dug amongst the rubble, desperate to find any clue that he was still alive. head spinning, hands shaking, and then suddenly your shizun is gripping your shoulders and forcing your meridians— if something more reminiscent of a corpse than a man, a mere wooden doll that is rotting away, can even have meridians— to quiet.)

hollow. empty. distant. barren. you stop being able to feel anything at all. this, you decide, is fine. the xuan su sword does not need to feel. it only needs to protect. to stand alone in the midst of the battlefield. it needs to be strong. it does not need to grieve.

the xuan su sword has no past.

(you can’t grieve your past.)

it has no future.

(you can’t envision your future.)

it only acts in the now.

(you can only focus on what you can do now, but your hands don’t feel like yours anymore. they haven’t felt like yours in a long time.)

you were alone, once. solitude once again welcomes you.

you can’t forget how his tiny hand felt in the palm of your hand as he snuck you a handful of scraps when he noticed you had given up your meal again. so clever, so observant, so spiteful— and yet so kind, despite all his jagged edges. you missed this kindness that stung yet soothed your heart (yes, you had a heart, once) in equal parts.

but only for a moment. after all, to miss is to desire. and you cannot desire. you must deny yourself this. to desire is to lose control. and you, who cannot be anyone— no, anything— more than a tool wearing an immortal’s robes, cannot desire. you must deny. it is all you have left.

happy pride month from your local agender butch!

my beloved fic writers, when you write characters in fics who are trans, please consider:

1. do they have gender dysphoria?

—> if they don’t— do they feel safe enough in their environment to actually present themself in a way that aligns with their gender identity? (not having gender dysphoria ≠ comfortable with being misgendered!!!)

—> how does gender dysphoria impact their gender presentation? their interactions with others? their relationships? the way they have sex? their ability to be emotionally vulnerable with others? how safe do they feel to express their true authentic self?

2. have they, or do they plan on, physically transitioning? (surgery, hormones, etc!)

—> how does (or can) physical transitioning affirm their gender? think about it more than just top and/or bottom surgery— the development of secondary sex characteristics (breast tissue growth, muscle mass, body hair, fat distribution, and more!) are equally (if not sometimes more) important!!!

—> if they don’t want to physically transition, why not? Is it due to lack of gender dysphoria, or are there other reasons (fear of being involuntarily outed, medical trauma, financial difficulties, lack of resources, unsupportive environments, etc).

—> IF THEY ARE NONBINARY. consider what gender affirming physical transition might look like! hormones + bottom surgery only, facial feminization surgery and voice training, top surgery and wearing a packer, or something else entirely!

—> how does their physical transition (or lack thereof) affect their relationships, the way they present themself, their self confidence, the way they have sex, their sense of safety? (specifically re: sex, remember that hormones especially can affect libido, and that trans people might not want to have sex the same way cis people do! how can your character have sex in a way that affirms their gender?)

—> final note here: if they are intersex and you are not, please please please do extensive research here. especially in the context of sex and physical transition! most importantly, look for perspectives coming from intersex folks themselves!

3. how does the language that others use (particularly gendered language) while referring to your character affect them? think: safety, comfort, dysphoria, euphoria!

—> how does their language that they use to refer to themself and their body affect them? do they refer to themself differently in their mind vs out loud?

4. how long have they known that they are trans?how did they figure this out?

—> how comfortable are they with their identity? are they still figuring things out?

—> what are the biggest triggers for gender dysphoria? (misgendering, clothing, voice, etc)

—> what brings them the most gender euphoria? (pronouns, haircuts, clothing, activities, etc!)

REMEMBER: at the end of the day, trans characters (like any other character!) are so much more than just their genitalia!

using correct pronouns for your character is not enough on its own, regardless of whether you want to write pwp or a slow burn romance fic. as writers, we must treat trans identities with the dignity and respect they deserve!

Before anything, Xuan Su is silently propped against the table where their supplies lie. Yue Qingyuan folds his spare robes and casts his gloves off to reveal scarred hands, hesitant over discarding his final layer. In hearing them advance toward him, his shoulders turn rigid and all falls still. Until, "Mu-shiban, what did you do to me?" They are stricken. "Yue-shixiong?" "To calm me, to such a degree." His voice betrays nothing even when risen from its low murmur. Tranquil. Deadlier for it. "What did you do?"

he’s never been allowed to do anything but deny himself, always has to carry the world on his shoulders, cannot even dream of the safety of being enveloped in another’s arms… impulsivity will be his downfall, he knows this, and so he cannot give in. he cannot be any more burdensome than he already has been. must stand on his own two feet and ignore the phantom stings of a thousand cuts, pay no mind to the sensations of bones breaking and tendons snapping and meridians shattering. he must show no weakness. he has no other option than this.

I don't think Yue Qingyuan believes that Shen Jiu can do no wrong -- I think Yue Qingyuan is actually far too accustomed with how much wrong he can do and therefore believes that what Shen Jiu does is wrong even if there isn't any proof (brothels + Liu Qingge).

Mostly I believe this due to the fact that Yue Qingyuan is overrun with guilt for not being there for Shen Jiu that he accepts that Shen Jiu turned out horrible because of him. And instead of correcting the behavior or doing something to stop it, he welcomes it as his own punishment. This is probably a massive part on why Yue Qingyuan is so quick to defend him, but so slow to believe him.

While I agree re: "accepts that SJ turned out horrible because of him", I do wanna comment on the idea that Yue Qingyuan believing Shen Jiu does wrong even when there isn't proof or that he didn't try to curb Shen Jiu's behavior, at least in the beginning.

For instance, in the brothels, Shen Jiu tells Yue Qingyuan to his face that he's there for the reasons everyone else has also assumed: that he's there to have sex, in the place that sells sex.

“If you don’t tell them and I don’t either, who’d know which sect we’re from?” Shen Qingqiu countered. “Cang Qiong Mountain is Cang Qiong Mountain. Tell me, which of Cang Qiong Mountain’s rules decrees that its disciples can’t visit this place? Cang Qiong Mountain isn’t a Buddhist monastery or Daoist temple. They might be able to control everything else, but they can’t stop me from looking for women! If Shixiong finds it shameful, he should watch that mouth of Liu Qingge’s.”

This isn't a situation where Yue Qingyuan was told a rumor and then immediately believed it. He found Shen Jiu in that brothel after learning that he'd badly beaten up a disciple who'd found him there, and walked in on the middle of him and Liu Qingge having a very public brawl about it. Yue Qingyuan is 'in a rare fit of anger' over it, shouting at him even, only cowing after Shen Qingqiu's speech about looking for women.

Even so, Yue Qingyuan does still ask him directly about why he's there:

“If you truly are doing well, why do you never spend the night on Qing Jing Peak?” Yue Qingyuan asked, following on his heels. Shen Qingqiu gave him a dark look. He knew that Yue Qingyuan must be thinking that he was being excluded by the rest of Qing Jing Peak. Yue Qingyuan’s guess wasn’t unreasonable, but he was genuinely wrong this time.

Both the readers and Shen Jiu know that this isn't true. But Shen Jiu pointedly never corrects him, because the alternative is to admit he's there because he can't stand sleeping around men anymore, something he won't admit because it's embarrassing.

For Yue Qingyuan to know this though, he'd have to practically be a mind-reader. He has no idea that this is all a result of how Shen Jiu found comfort and safety with Qiu Haitang; all he has is what he's seen and Shen Jiu's own words.

As for killing Liu Qingge...

The thing Shen Qingqiu most often said to Liu Qingge was: “Liu Qingge, I’ll definitely kill you one day!” (...) As Shen Qingqiu had turned a deaf ear to his every plea, Yue Qingyuan found it difficult to speak further. After all, he couldn’t straight-up tell him something like: If you hadn’t used every means to ambush Liu Qingge after the meet in order to teach him a lesson, the two of you wouldn’t fly into a rage at the slightest contact now, nor would you loathe the mere sight of each other.

This was a reputation Shen Jiu built entirely by himself If someone goes around threatening to kill someone, if he is violently ambushing them repeatedly, and then suddenly that person dies violently when he's the only other person nearby... Literally what else is anyone supposed to think?

We don't know how much, if at all, Shen Jiu defended himself after this or just what sort of investigations went on in the sect -- but we know that he was still peak lord for 8 more years until Binghe returns, and Yue Qingyuan asks him bluntly in prison:

Suddenly, he asked, “Did you really kill Liu-shidi?” Shen Qingqiu didn’t want to look at his face at all while he answered. But he couldn’t help but lift his eyes, giving Yue Qingyuan’s expression a quick glance. He froze for a moment, then abruptly yanked his hand out of Yue Qingyuan’s grip and sat up. “You repeatedly said that you’d kill him one day,” said Yue Qingyuan. “But I never thought that you would actually do it.”

Nearly ten years, and he still doesn't seem to believe it! But that's also ten+ years of watching Shen Qingqiu attack his martial siblings, beat children, and now stands accused of even more murder and arson on top of it all.

It really feels like Yue Qingyuan is stuck, both in the story and within fandom. If he doesn't believe any of it, he's being naive and stupid, because Shen Jiu did do a lot of these things, but then he believes any of it, he's betraying his Xiao-Jiu. What is he supposed to do beyond asking Shen Jiu himself, who never gives him a direct answer either way, neither defending himself or admitting when he was in the wrong. And this all makes sense for someone like him: Shen Jiu fully believes that he's scum by now, that there's no defending himself as much as there's no reason why he shouldn't have acted the way he did.

But Yue Qingyuan apparently still wanted to hear it from him because like you said, he is used to Shen Qingqiu doing wrong and carries a ton of guilt, but he's also been holding out hope for decades that maybe if he was stubborn and patient enough, Shen Qingqiu's anger would dissipate the way it used to when they were kids. That's why I think Shen Jiu's line "There is no ‘if,’ no ‘in the beginning’—there was never any chance of redemption!" finally crushes him.

It's part of why Qijiu works so well as the mirror to Bingqiu. Binghe's chasing Shen Yuan around, wanting explanations and confused why he's being treated this way, before deciding he can't trust him anymore. Meanwhile, Shen Yuan's big moment is realizing that similarly believing there's no ‘if,’ no ‘in the beginning’, and no chance of redemption from sending Binghe to the Abyss has only ended up making things worse, because Binghe could only draw his own conclusions from Shen Yuan's silence.

Shen Yuan, Luo Binghe, and even Yue Qingyuan himself all learn the lesson about reaching out even when its deeply upsetting or shameful. Shen Jiu never does until it's too late.

So ultimately, I don't personally think it's necessarily that Yue Qingyuan is slow to believe Shen Jiu. If anything, I think he believed that his capacity for kindness and loyalty - the reason why he thinks Shen Jiu and Liu Qingge could be friends -- for far longer and too deeply than he believed in Shen Jiu's growing cruelty and self-destruction. And even when he does realize it, he still tries to save him. :']
