There's definitely an exploration of slavery. Nathaniel Lennox left 20 years ago to live in America and owns 'thousands of slaves'. Apparently trying to find Margoret. William is obviously uncomfortable of this, pointing out 'funny you never mentioned him'. Margerot sees this as an opportunity to get money from him
ALSO MY WISH HAS BEEN GRANTED, love the little scene where Violet takes a bite of bread from Amelia and teases her. I SEE U
back to Margaret, the microaggressions(?) are insane. Like I know it must've been typical to have black women as maids/slaves, but then Margaret assumes she's at the wrong place, to only discover that Harriet is married(?) to Nathaniel
well ig she said mistress but is that the same thing? Someone who knows more about the 18th century please feel free to correct me
lowkey I don't think Harriet is happily married to Nathaniel!!! Like the tension was crazy. And the fact that they've named their daughter after Margaret. HARRIET RUN AWAY AAAAAAAAAAA
not to mention the fact that their relationship probably started very dubiously...It was common for slave owners to be with their slaves so...ESCAPE HARRIET
"I don't think your a dog at all, Mr Haxby. I think you're a bitch." GET HIM CHARLOTTE YESSS GET HIM
I must say I love the costuming in this show. All kinds of colors and patterns.
something is very wrong with single children. There's something lowkey incestuous or simply devious between Charles and Mrs. Quigley I DON'T LIKE ITT
I do like how Emily uses her sarcasm and bluntness to her advantage to charm Lord Fallon but I also want to scream at her LIKE DON'T GO NEAR HIM HE'S CRAZYYY
Kitty saying 'remember your first time' was crazy to me at first because I thought she was being extremely insensitive. But now I think she meant it more as a warning. Like know the nature of patriarchy or something?
I wonder if there is a parallel between Emily and Haxby being 'spies' to richier people, Charles and Howard disrespectively
also I can appreciate how Lucy twists the whole 'remember your first time' against a poor boy, empowering herself. I think it shows how clever she can be
YUCKKK THE SON BEING A RACIST EWWW and him grinning like a piece of shit
Mary Cooper is funny and tragic as a character. Like, despite her saying no one can use her unless they are paying, Marg and Quigley were using her to the end. Haxby's prayer was thrown to his face
Very interesting funeral scene though. I think I remember there was a funeral similar to Cooper's in season 2, where Margorat and her folks 'preached' in the streets. But instead of mourning her in silence, they celebrate her memory. Was that common amongst the poor??? Or is it kind of their own thing??
Violet Cross I love you too
I'm really trying to understand Mr. Marney's character and purpose in the story. Is he a male prostitute or is he just a really good friend? He's close to Charlotte for sure. Is his role to tempt Charlotte back into her old life, while she's trying to kind of ascend or live somewhat more 'respectably? IE, being in a situationship with Howard?
